Big Idea

The argument in one line.

Claude edits video far better when it studies one reference reel frame by frame than when it is told to use its imagination, and the cheapest edit in this experiment was the best one.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • A solo creator filming talking-head videos who wants an AI to cut mistakes, add b-roll and sound effects without learning Premiere Pro.
  • A Claude Code user curious how to package a repeatable workflow as a reusable skill that learns from a reference video.
  • Someone budgeting for AI video generation who wants real per-second credit costs for Kling, Seedance and similar models.
SKIP IF…
  • You need an editor that can hear music and match cuts to the beat; the video says plainly Claude can only measure sound.
  • You have no Claude Code subscription (at least $20 a month) and are not willing to get one.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

Jad built two free Claude Code editing skills. Editor V2 studies a nine-second Instagram reel frame by frame, then cuts his voice, pulls free archive footage, builds a fast picture montage on the reel's timing and places every sound effect. Editor V3 uses Higgsfield's Kling model to turn a side-angle recording into a color-shifting silhouette. His earlier imagination-driven 1K editor produced AI slop and burned 812 credits, while V2 cost nothing and looked best. The lesson is to give Claude one reference to learn rather than asking it to imagine.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • When Claude was told to use its imagination the edits looked like AI slop; giving it one reel to study frame by frame fixed it.
  • The most expensive attempt, the 1K editor at 812 credits, looked the worst, while Editor V2 at zero new credits looked the best.
  • Claude cannot hear music, it can only measure sound, so a bass-heavy track that laptop speakers barely play went unnoticed.
  • A first montage that cut 11 times a second against the reel's 18 looked right to Claude until it measured the cadence.
  • Kling cost 2 credits a second for the silhouette, versus 7 for Genjutsu and 7.6 for Seedance, and was the only one that kept the mouth moving clearly.
  • Giving Kling only the video produced a painted blue glow around the head; generating a target image per color from a real frame fixed the look.
  • One render sat for 20 minutes producing nothing, and the fix was written back into the skill so later users never hit it.
  • Previewing every shot and its cost in the browser before spending credits keeps a generative edit from wasting money.
  • The first full cut took a little over an hour with no clip touched, and the skill gets faster the more guardrails it accumulates.
Takeaway

Teach Claude from one reference, not imagination

WHAT TO LEARN

AI editing works when Claude studies a single reference reel closely, and it fails and costs more when it is asked to invent the style itself.

  • Giving Claude one reel to analyze frame by frame, then storing the findings in a skill file, produced far better edits than open-ended imagination prompts.
  • Measure what Claude cannot judge by feel: it checked pictures that looked right yet changed 11 times a second against the reel's 18 until cadence was measured.
  • Claude can only measure sound, not hear it, so music choice and bass-heavy tracks need a human ear or your own track.
  • Test generative models on the same five seconds before committing: Kling at 2 credits a second beat Seedance and Genjutsu on mouth accuracy and price.
  • Preview the full shot list with its cost before any credits are spent so a generative edit cannot quietly burn budget.
  • Write every fix back into the skill, such as the 20-minute hung render, so the next run never repeats the mistake.

This is my raw footage, and this is the exact same footage edited fully by my AI. I didn't touch a clip, I didn't look at the clip, and I don't even know how to use Premiere Pro. Everything that you're seeing right now was made by this skill that I've built, and I called it Editor V2.
You give it your clips, and it will bring outside clips that will go with them. It will build a fast picture montage at the start and every sound effect and cut the whole thing together by itself. And the camera clicks that you hear are real sounds, not AI sounds.
And I just want to let you know, this is completely free. So if you want the editor V2, just watch the video. You'll get the full skill directly.
well just turned my raw footage into those two edits and this one that you just saw was the first one i'm super excited because today is different from my other videos normally i give you one skill today i'm giving you two in this video and both of them are free to install and later on you'll see the second one which took me more work to do so let me tell you exactly how this works even if you've never opened cloud code before don't worry this is completely beginner friendly i'm not going to skip a single step out of this and the reason they're free is because I've already made videos about my editors and you guys really like them.
Editor V1 got 70 ,000 views. The free model one got over 130 ,000 views. So I'll keep working on them and give you the best results there is.
And I'll be honest with you, this one was almost going to kill me. It kept giving me bad edits and errors. One version was actually really bad that I threw the entire idea away.
But I'm happy it's done now and I'll show you exactly what went wrong and what are the things that you should avoid and how you can turn your... And just so you know, both skills are free in my school community it's the first link in the description and if you're new here my name is jad i give away skills for free three to four times a week and the school community so if you get stuck just post it and i'll reply to you and also the weekly calls and i would love to see you there now in this video i'll show you each edit next to the raw footage so you can judge it yourself then i'm going to install them with you step by step and at the end i'll show you what every version costed me including the one that i completely threw away all right so let's look at each one what it can do so let's start with the editor v2 that you saw in the beginning you can see the raw footage that's me at my desk talking to the camera there's nothing on it so here's how you can turn your own skill and here's how i turn my skill i gave it one instagram reel that i really loved it was nine seconds long and i told claude to learn it frame by frame i found about 30 pictures in that reel used about 75 times and every time a picture comes back it's blurred or the color has changed so it never feels like the same picture twice
So then it used all of that on my video. Step one, it cuts my voice. It takes out the pauses and the mistakes.
And it actually found the line I said twice. So you only hear it once. I don't have to go back and forth trying to re -record myself or fix the mistakes.
Step two, it finds the outside footage. It uses Wikimedia Commons, which is a free library of photos and the pre -lingered archives, which has a free old films. Step three, it builds the montage on the same timing as the reel.
And step four, it places every sound which is super important and it doesn't just grab anything online when i say i don't know how to use premiere pro it cuts out an old film about moviola which is what editors cut films on before computers and i didn't even know that until my claude explained to me where he got those pictures so basically it goes from what i say on the video now the first version wasn't something that i really would post the montage played in silence so you had no idea what you were watching and every time i talked it zoomed in on my face in a really strange way so i kept refining removing the zooms faking fixing the sounds and what i found is like these sound effects it was generating by code and i didn't really like that so there were some other tweaks where i said i want like more of a text behind me when i leave okay so you might be watching and thinking all right you spent a lot of time a real editor wouldn't done a better job and you're right but the first full cut took a little over an hour and i didn't touch a single clip and now the more you put into a skill the faster it becomes
comes actually. The skill is already sets and it knows the guardrails already and it knows the most important what I really like. Okay, so now let's talk about the second one.
Editor V3. October 18, 2026. I showed you how Claude edits my videos and it did 20 ,000 views.
Not bad. So I try it again. October 21st.
Editor V1. Claude edits the whole video and I don't touch a single frame of it. 70 ,000 views.
Hey. People actually want this. So I try again.
October 25th. This time a free AI model edits it with $0. 132 ,000 views.
Wait, what's happening? October 30th. I tried to make it even better.
Spent a thousand credits. It looks like garbage. Genuinely really bad.
Why give up and give a bad skill? Why finally learn Premiere Pro? or were those views just lucky no i just kept working on it october 31st editor v2 and october 31st editor v3 in the same video and like other of my videos this one is also free This one comes from a reel by Will Chaffer.
I may be butchering their name. And what I loved is the side angle. It's a silhouette talking in front of one color, and then it keeps changing to blue to pale tail.
So the color tells the story before you hear like any word. This one took me more work because to get that look, I recorded myself twice. Once from the prompt, and that's where my voice comes from.
and once from the side and that's where my outline and my mouth come from then to make him look realistic because i don't have a camera crew in here with me i basically went to hicks field which changed the lighting the background it's actually my real take with the light changed so it's still me and my mouth still follows what i say i tested three ai models for that on the same five seconds genjutsu looked good but my mouth followed less clearly and it cost me seven credits a second cdance left a piece of my mic in the corner for 7 .6 credits a second and cling actually kept my mouth moving for two credits a second so that's the one and then the skill and one thing i found while testing this is if you only give cling the video you get a blue glow around your head and it looks painted so claude makes one picture for each color from my real frame and it gives cling that picture as the target so every clip comes out looking like the same film basically and everything after
That happens on my Mac. The dates inside my head, the huge words behind me, the view counts going up, the film burns. And if you want something to change, it costs me nothing.
The only thing that costed me credits was basically using Higgs field for the silhouettes. Cause I don't have a film setting here. Okay.
So now I explained to you how I built those. Let's talk more about how can you do this and how can you install it or build yours? So let's talk about this cloud code, which is where cloud does the editing on your computer.
That's at least $20 a month by two skills. And those are free. And for editor V3, only Higgs field, you connect it to cloud once.
And if you don't want text field subscription, I have a link in the description. with a promo art for their API. And if you're thinking, okay, I don't know how to code.
You don't need to, I didn't write a single line of code in there called does the entire work. And why it's super important to have it in code is if you want to do changes, it's super simple to do that because code is super customizable. Meaning if I want to change a color, if I want to change a caption, it can be done with Cloud from my subscription or from your subscription.
So the first thing is go to my school. It's the first link in the description and open the post for the video. You download the zip and leave it in your downloads folder.
You don't need to unzip it. Please don't. Then open Cloud Code, paste the setup prompt that you'll have in the Google Drive and hit enter.
You'll find the zip by itself and it will install the free tools. There is FFmpeg in there, which actually cuts the video. There's a speed.
model which listens to your voice and writes down every single word. And there's a render which turns the graphics into a real voice. If it asks you to allow something, just click allow.
Once you have it installed, you just type in a simple way, give me a demo of 10 seconds. So you'll see how it looks like. And then once you look at it, you start a new session.
And there you go. There is your editor. Now let's talk about actually using it.
Drag in your recording and type one line. edit this video with Editor V2, it helps to give a few clips of you working too. Same thing for Editor V3, the more clips you have, the better it is.
And before it spends a single credit for V3, it will open the page in your browser with every shot and what it costs. So you only pay once you've seen the plan and what is the target. So it doesn't waste money for you.
When you give it notes, say the exact second and start short. Mine are both about a minute. The first time it's going to take a little bit longer.
And the only thing you have to do is wait. So how does it know what to do? You don't need to write a long prompt because that comes with a skill.
You give it one video that you love and it learns that video. And that study goes into the skill, which is the file cloud reads before it starts. So you don't have, to explain the edit again, it also comes with the same study tool.
So you can give it any reel you want really. And it took me the whole day to figure it out with the credits and so on. But I installed every tool that you need in there.
I feel like I need to talk about the bloopers. This is a part that a lot of creators hide where they say their AI edited the entire video in like 30 minutes, 40 minutes. This took me a really a day and I spent a lot of time refining it and I have to share it to you what made it really bad.
So before V2 and V3, I tried something else and I called it the 1K editor. I told Claude to act like a film director and use its imagination. In the first cut, a narrator's voice come out of nowhere and my monitor breaks into flies at my face.
And basically I told her it looks really bad. The next one had so many colors and looks in one video, complete garbage, genuinely really, really bad. And that set up my entire mood for yesterday actually.
And that's where I saw what was wrong. Every time Claude used it, own imagination it looked like ai slop so i stopped asking it to imagine i gave it one reel and i told it learn from this frame by frame and it doesn't only copy the look it counts the first v2 montage looked right when claude checked the pictures and it still changed 11 times a second the real change is 18 times so it went back and now it's 17.
so it actually moves like the reel instead of just looking like it it still broke though one render sat there for 20 minutes and made nothing with no air at all i only found out because i asked a short preview so claude tracked down y and it wrote the fix into the skill so that won't happen to you i made a lot of mistakes so you really don't have to now here's the thing claude can't hear music it can only measure sound the music that i picked was nearly all bass and your laptop speaker barely play bass so i didn't hear that at all so it used demux which splits the voice from the music it took will's voice out of his reel measure this war his music and his effects and their own and rebuilt it for me, but I didn't really like it.
So I prefer putting my own music. So if you're this far, you're probably wondering how much did it all cost for me? Let's start with the error that I've made for the 1k editor.
That one use exactly 812 credits on video generations and image generations. And the V3 video, I say a thousand, I went back actually, and I checked it's around 812 editor V3 cost me 217 credits, but 127 of those were my tests.
The three models I told you about, you don't pay for those because the answer is already in the scale. The final clips were 90 credits. So if you want to make a video like that, it would cost you 90 credits for the V3.
The reason why I spent that much credits is just really like to learn and to fix my errors. An editor V2 costed me zero. credits the only thing that i paid for was basically my cloud subscription i did use actually some ai images for x -rays that costed me around like 10 credits everything else that you saw is actually free archives and my own footage so the one that cost me the most looked the worst basically and the one that almost cost of nothing editor v2 was the best result and i want to be super and i want to be super transparent with you because some of you are going to ask after my last video does it work with the free model i haven't tested it yet i built both of these on Opus 5 .5, but I will definitely give it a try.
Now I know it's not perfect. It still needs a little bit of more work, but the Editor V2, I'm really happy about it. So where does this really leave us?
Is this better than the real editor? Absolutely not. A real editor can actually hear the music, but that was never its job this is for anyone who wants their video to look like this and can't pay for an editor or a film crew or someone like me who's never opened premiere pro i genuinely would have not had these results if i did it manually for myself you give cloud your recording it'll cut the mistakes it'll find the footage it'll build the whole edit and it will check its own work and honestly that's good enough for me but let me know down in the comments what you think and if you get stuck with the weekly pause again so bring your questions i would love to or if he can't join the calls, just leave a post and I would love to reply to it.
