Big Idea

The argument in one line.

YouTube's algorithm has turned content-first instead of channel-first, so a single good video, a timed Hype boost, a Short, or a specific-enough search query can now break out a brand-new channel regardless of subscriber count.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • A small or brand-new YouTube creator with fewer than a few thousand subscribers who feels like the algorithm has been ignoring them.
  • Someone building a long-form channel who hasn't decided how much to invest in Shorts yet.
  • A creator who wants to understand how the Hype feature, Ask YouTube search, and the new monetization bar actually work before reacting to headlines about them.
SKIP IF…
  • You already have more than 500,000 subscribers, since Hype isn't available to you and most of this advice targets smaller channels.
  • You're looking for a platform-agnostic social growth strategy; this is YouTube-specific.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

YouTube has shifted from ranking channels by subscriber count to ranking individual videos on their own merit, which is why tiny channels can suddenly rack up hundreds of thousands of views on a single upload. Four systems reinforce this: the platform no longer checks subscriber count when judging a video's performance; the new Hype feature gives channels between 500 and 500,000 subscribers bonus discovery points that scale up the smaller the channel is; Shorts now dominate the mobile home feed, splitting YouTube into a long-form TV platform and a Shorts-first mobile platform; and the new Ask YouTube AI search surfaces specific, narrowly-targeted videos regardless of channel size. The practical takeaway: make videos that answer one specific question well, rather than videos aimed at everyone.

Where the time goes.

00:00 – 01:05

01 · Intro: the gold rush is back

Reframes 2019-2023 as YouTube's golden growth era, notes the algorithm got harder to crack after 2023, and sets up the paradox: watch-hour requirements just rose to 8,000 hours even as new discovery tools start favoring small channels.

01:05 – 02:42

02 · Content-first, not channel-first

YouTube no longer checks subscriber count when judging a video's performance, which is why tiny channels can suddenly rack up hundreds of thousands of views on a single upload.

02:42 – 03:58

03 · Hype: built to favor small creators

The Hype feature is capped at channels under 500,000 subscribers and deliberately awards more bonus points per supporter to smaller channels than bigger ones.

03:58 – 06:21

04 · Shorts dominate the mobile feed

Shorts now occupy most of the YouTube home feed, splitting the platform into a long-form TV experience and a Shorts-first mobile experience; Dan pitches NexusClips for turning long-form into Shorts automatically.

06:21 – 09:26

05 · Ask YouTube rebuilds search

The new AI-powered Ask YouTube feature lets viewers search with full, specific questions instead of keywords, surfacing narrow, well-targeted videos over generic ones regardless of channel size.

09:26 – 10:09

06 · Course pitch and close

Dan closes by discounting his YouTube Wealth Academy to $49.99 a month, cancel anytime, framed as the way to act on everything covered before new rules land in February.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • YouTube's algorithm no longer checks how many subscribers a channel has when judging whether a video deserves to be pushed out, so a 200-subscriber channel can outperform channels with years of history on a single upload.
  • YouTube is raising its monetization bar from 4,000 to 8,000 watch hours effective February 2027, even as it opens up new discovery paths for small channels.
  • YouTube's Hype feature is only available to channels with 500 to 500,000 subscribers; anything bigger than 500,000 subscribers is locked out entirely.
  • Hype awards more bonus points per vote to smaller channels, so the same hype action is worth more on a 500-subscriber channel than on a 100,000-subscriber channel.
  • Hype can only be applied to a creator's eligible long-form uploads during their first seven days live, which rewards quick post-upload engagement.
  • Shorts have taken over so much of the YouTube home feed that avoiding them while scrolling has become close to impossible.
  • YouTube is functionally splitting into two platforms: a TV-first long-form experience and a mobile-first Shorts experience.
  • The new Ask YouTube feature lets viewers type full, specific questions instead of short keyword searches, then returns a blended page of videos, Shorts, and written answers.
  • A narrow, specific video, like 'best beginner camera for filming travel videos under $500', can now outrank a broad, generic video in AI-powered search regardless of the creator's channel size.
  • Making videos that try to serve everyone is now a liability, because AI search rewards videos with a clearly defined, specific audience and question.
Takeaway

Specific videos now beat big channels.

ALGORITHM SHIFT

YouTube now ranks individual videos rather than channels, so a specific, well-targeted video can outperform a bigger channel's content in Hype, Shorts placement, and AI-powered search alike.

  • YouTube no longer factors in a channel's subscriber count when deciding whether to push a video to new viewers, so a video's own performance is what matters.
  • The Hype feature only works for channels under 500,000 subscribers, and it deliberately gives smaller channels more points per supporter than bigger ones, so audience support matters most early on.
  • Shorts now dominate the mobile home feed, which means a channel's long-form uploads and its Shorts strategy are increasingly serving two different audiences on two different devices.
  • The new Ask YouTube search rewards videos that answer one narrow, specific question clearly, rather than videos trying to appeal to the widest possible audience.
  • Watch-hour requirements for monetization are rising from 4,000 to 8,000 hours starting February 2027, so reaching partner-program eligibility now takes roughly twice the watch time it used to.
  • A channel's entire trajectory can change from one or two videos performing well, since YouTube no longer requires years of slow subscriber growth before giving a video a real shot.

So the YouTube gold rush is back. Now, I don't know if many of you were on YouTube back in 2019 to 2023, but that was the best time to grow a channel. And I refer to that time as a YouTube gold rush because it was just so easy to grow back then.
Then, somewhere between like the end of 2023 and the start of 2026, the algorithm got really weird and it seemed impossible to grow a channel for most people. It really felt like YouTube was only prioritising the bigger channels.
But recently things have started to shift and the guys at YouTube have been introducing new features to help smaller and newer channels to start growing again. Now I know this comes at a time when they've literally just increased the monetization requirements from 4 ,000 to 8 ,000 watch hours which is insane but look hear me out because in this video I'm going to explain what the new YouTube Gold Rush is and why this could be the best and last opportunity to make it big on YouTube.
Let's get into it. All right so the first of the big shifts that YouTube have introduced lately is that the platform has become much more content first rather than channel first and this is probably the biggest change on YouTube over the last year or so. Now I'm sure you've probably heard of loads of other gurus saying that all subscribers are dead and yeah they are kind of right like subscribers really don't matter at all anymore.
But it goes much deeper than that because YouTube has become much more video first rather than channel first. So instead of the old way where YouTube would basically unofficially prioritize big channels over small channels purely based on how many subscribers they had, now they actually don't ever look at a channel subscriber count at all when they judge the success of a video itself.
And this is why you constantly now see those tiny channels with like 200 subscribers suddenly getting 50 ,000, 100 ,000 or even millions of views on one video. Because YouTube's new algorithm really doesn't care how small or new a channel actually is. If people are clicking on a specific video and they're enjoying it, YouTube will push it out as far as it possibly can.
So the opportunity here for small and new YouTubers is massive. You no longer need to... spend years slowly building up a channel before YouTube starts giving you a chance anymore.
You just need to make one or two really good videos that YouTube can find the right audience for. And if those videos perform well, it can completely change your channel's trajectory forever. And look, if you want even more proof that YouTube are actively trying to help smaller creators get discovered more, you only have to look as far as the new hype feature.
Because this is literally a feature YouTube has built specifically to benefit smaller creators. Because only creators with between 500 and 500 ,000 subscribers are eligible for it. The bigger creators with more than 500k subs do not get this feature.
But the even more interesting part about hype is that YouTube deliberately gives smaller creators an advantage with it. And a lot of people don't know this bit exists. But basically, the smaller your channel is, the more points you actually receive when someone hypes your video, like the more points you get per hype.
So somebody hyping a channel with like 500 subscribers is worth considerably more than someone hyping a similar channel with... 100 ,000 subscribers. And this is a big shift because traditionally, being the bigger creator would give you the bigger advantage.
But YouTube has designed this discovery system where being the smaller creator can actually work more in your favor. And look, we are actually going to see an even bigger push on this new hype feature. over the next 12 months so please keep your eyes peeled for more exciting things to come with this now the next thing look if i show you two screenshots of the youtube home page that were taken years apart what's the biggest difference you notice here well apart from how small or big the videos appear on the home page are you should have noticed that how prominent the short shelf is now back 10 years ago there were obviously no shorts at all but since then they've been taking up more and more space on the YouTube home feed.
And now it's almost impossible. In fact, it is impossible to avoid shorts. Now I use YouTube every single day, obviously, but I personally hate what short form is doing to society.
But even I lose myself down deep shorts holes pretty much every single day until I basically realized I've wasted half an hour of my life and I'll snap out of it and I'll regret it. Look, all of this isn't by accident. This is literally YouTube's way of cleverly pushing shorts towards the top of the agenda, especially for mobile users.
So what does this mean for creators? Well, YouTube is being split in two. On one hand, you have the TV side of YouTube for people who pretty much only want to watch long -form videos, but then you also have the mobile side of YouTube for people who watch a ton of shorts and maybe the odd...
long form video here and there but mainly just shorts. Now the guys at YouTube are pretty much orchestrating this split and their plan is to slowly make shorts dominate the mobile platform and they'll be making a huge push for people who make loads of shorts. Now I'm personally now much more of a long form creator myself but I noticed this shift happening a long time ago.
I made a ton of shorts on my old channels that got hundreds of millions of views. Now on my old travel channel I made bingeable TV -friendly long film videos, but then I basically clipped those long film videos up into quick shorts so I could take advantage of this new shift.
Now, I know that clipping up long film videos into shorts might sound like a daunting task to some of you, but a tool you could use for this is called Nexus Clips. It's an AI tool built around clipping and it will automatically clip up your long -form videos into multiple different shorts by picking out the most engaging or viral moments of them.
It now also has its own editing software built in so you can fully edit everything from within it. You can then also add things like captions, subtitles, voiceovers and much more. Now if you do want to check them out I'll leave all the links there down below.
And look, then we have probably one of the biggest opportunities that hardly anyone is talking about yet. Now, the new way people actually find and discover videos on YouTube is going to completely change, and it's already started. Now, for years, the YouTube search bar was pretty simple.
Somebody would type in something like best camera for YouTube, and then the algorithm would basically just show videos it thought would be relevant to that search term. And that was basically it. The viewer would then have to scroll down through...
all of these results in the search results and pick out the video they thought might suit them best. But now going forward YouTube is using AI much deeper to completely overhaul the traditional search bar with the new feature called Ask YouTube which basically lets people search for content by asking proper detailed questions rather than just typing in a few keywords into the old search bar.
So instead of the traditional way where someone would search something like best camera for YouTube, where you'd get all of these generic results here, like just videos that are designed for mass market and don't really answer the personal questions. Now, the new Ask YouTube feature lets people be much more specific to what they actually want to see.
So now you could type in something like what's the best beginner camera for filming travel videos for under $500, which is obviously way more personal and focused. towards that individual viewer and his problem. And YouTube's really clever new AI will actually go out and find the perfect videos that answer that exact question directly.
So now, instead of just a boring search result, you'll actually get a full breakdown of informative text, videos, and even shorts. all based specifically around beginner cameras under $500 in the travel space, which is obviously really good. But if we were to type in that exact same search query into the old search bar, you'd get all of these super generic videos that barely even touch on travel videos and barely even mention $500.
Now, for all of you small creators, this is a huge new way to get your videos discovered. Because the good news is, unlike the old search results, YouTube will not prioritize videos showing up here purely based on channel size or how many views a video already has. Instead, it's using AI to understand exactly what your video is about and then match it with what the viewer has asked for.
So if your video directly relates to someone's search term closely enough, you have a great chance of appearing here. This is why your videos going forward now need to be very clear and specific.
don't make videos that are super broad or try to answer or try to target everyone basically. The more specific your video is the easier it becomes for YouTube to understand who it's for and then where and when to recommend it. Everyone has a fair and equal chance of appearing here in these new results and trust me this new feature is going to completely change content discovery forever on YouTube.
Now if you want to take all of this even further and build your channel up to reach the monetization requirements as quickly as possible before the new rules come in in February next year, I've just reduced my YouTube Wealth Academy down to only $49 .99 a month. And you can cancel anytime.
Now I know that many people don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a course. So I basically made it affordable for everyone. There's no minimum term, you can come in pay $49, learn everything within a month and then cancel your subscription if you wanted to.
It's totally risk free. We've got hundreds of creators in here and a buzzing community of people all helping each other out. really a great place to be.
And there is so much content on there that you won't find anywhere else on YouTube. Now the link is down below if you do want to come in and join us all. If not, give this video a watch here because I guarantee you'll find it really helpful.
I'll see you there.
