Big Idea

The argument in one line.

YouTube's algorithm now watches and listens to a video directly instead of relying on the tags and keywords you type in, so ranking now rewards clear topics and questions, not keyword stuffing.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • A YouTube creator or channel manager who still writes titles, tags and descriptions the old way and hasn't adjusted for AI-driven discovery.
  • Someone deciding how to structure chapters, segments and Shorts for a video they're about to publish.
  • A creator relying on Shorts purely for reach, who hasn't considered them part of the same search system as long-form videos.
SKIP IF…
  • You don't publish on YouTube or don't rely on YouTube search and recommendations for growth.
  • You're already structuring videos around specific viewer questions and writing descriptive chapters.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

YouTube has built Google's Gemini AI into its ranking system, so instead of relying on the tags, hashtags and descriptions a creator types in, the algorithm now watches every frame and listens to every word of a video to build its own understanding of what it's about. That change powers two new discovery tools, Ask YouTube and Custom Feeds, which match viewers to the exact video, short, or even video segment that answers what they asked for. The five tactical shifts that follow are to plan around specific topics and questions instead of a single keyword, treat Shorts as part of the same search system as long-form, write clear and descriptive chapter titles instead of vague ones, structure videos in clearly separated segments, and say the actual names of what you're discussing instead of vague pronouns.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • YouTube now runs Gemini AI across every video, reading each frame and every spoken word instead of just the tags and descriptions a creator writes.
  • User-typed metadata like tags, hashtags and keyword-stuffed titles now carries far less ranking weight because the algorithm builds its own profile by watching the video directly.
  • Ask YouTube answers full questions and can jump a viewer straight to the exact timestamp inside a video that matches what they asked.
  • Custom Feeds lets viewers describe a niche interest in plain language and get an entire personalized feed built around it.
  • Ask YouTube and Custom Feeds are currently limited to premium US users but are expected to expand to everyone by the end of the year.
  • Ranking now rewards videos that answer specific, narrow questions rather than ones that repeat one broad keyword many times.
  • Shorts appear inside Ask YouTube results alongside long-form videos, so a well-clipped short is a second chance to rank for the same question.
  • Clipping the single most useful minute or two out of a long-form video into a standalone short is an efficient way to create SEO-relevant Shorts.
  • Vague chapter titles like Method 1, Method 2 and Method 3 now work against a video because YouTube's systems use chapter text to match segments to viewer questions.
  • Descriptive chapter titles of around five words help YouTube's systems match a specific part of a video to a specific search.
  • Structuring a video into clearly separated segments, each with one subject, lets Ask YouTube send viewers to exactly the part that answers their question.
  • Naming the exact camera, place, game or product on screen, instead of saying this or it, gives the algorithm more usable context from the spoken language itself.
Takeaway

The tags-and-hashtags playbook stopped working.

There's been a huge new update with SEO on YouTube and it's opened up a brand new opportunity to have your videos suggested more. So forget the old tactics like tags and hashtags because this new SEO trick is bringing in so many more views for channels of all sizes. So in this video, I'll explain the big changes YouTube have made and then I'll show you the five brand new places to include SEO in your videos.
Let's get into it. All right, so you may or may not be aware, there have been some big changes to the YouTube platform lately. And the three major changes that directly affect SEO are the introduction of Gemini AI and the two new platform features, Ask YouTube and Custom Feeds.
Now, yes, you've probably already heard of these updates. But I can guarantee you that you haven't yet been told about how they affect SEO and what new opportunities they actually bring. So let me explain.
So firstly, earlier this year, the heads of YouTube decided to integrate Google's latest Gemini AI tool into the YouTube algorithm. Now, they've done this for a number of different reasons, but the main reason being is that Gemini can now fully analyze... every single frame and every single word spoken in a video and this ability to do so goes much, much deeper than what YouTube's old algorithm was capable of.
So before this Gemini update, YouTube's old algorithm would heavily rely on user -inputted metadata to help analyze and rank your content against certain topics. And what I mean by user -inputted metadata is literally just like you guys writing your own metadata. Literally just simple things like tags, hashtags, descriptions, titles, and thumbnails.
Like, that is metadata. and you being the user, adding it in your own videos. So over the last like 10 years, when people uploaded YouTube videos, you could pretty much just stuff loads of keywords in your tags, your descriptions, your video file name, titles.
and all of those places. And it would help you massively in having your videos appear when someone is searching for or watching videos around that topic of that keyword you inputted. So the old algorithm would basically rely on you guys to supply it with the metadata that would help it in who to push your videos in front of.
But now, since YouTube have integrated Gemini AI into the algorithm, everything has completely changed because instead of the old algorithm relying on you to give it the right metadata, it now uses Gemini's AI to thoroughly scan and read every single bit of your video. And Gemini's AI will actually gather all of that metadata information itself.
So this means that user -inputted metadata, like your tags, your descriptions, your hashtags, file names, and all of that stuff, are mostly useless because the new algorithm will basically analyze your entire video and create its own metadata profile around your video for you. And whilst this might sound like a bit deep and scary, they've actually done this because they want YouTube to become far more personalized to each individual viewer, which is a good thing.
And this is why they've introduced the two major changes, Ask YouTube and Custom Feed. And this is where the new SEO tricks get really exciting. So quickly, for those of you who don't know yet, Ask YouTube is basically YouTube's new AI -powered search tool, where instead of typing in a basic keyword into the search bar, you can now ask it much more detailed questions about what you want to watch, or even just any questions in general.
It will then give you a personalized answer using relevant videos, shorts, and even specific sections from within videos that best matched what you asked. And it's a really cool, exciting feature. Then custom feeds is a new feature that lets you basically describe the exact type of content you want to watch.
And YouTube will then build an entire new personalized feed around what you've asked for. So rather than relying on just your normal homepage, you can create a brand new feed specifically around a topic, a niche, a mood, or a type of video you're interested in. Again, it's a really cool new feature.
And they're both currently on their... run at the moment, and they're only available to premium users in the US. But I've been told by many sources they're planning on expanding this to pretty much everyone very soon.
And by the end of the year, these two features are going to be the main two ways people search for and find content to watch. So this brings in a brand new SEO strategy that you can take advantage of before everyone else gets there. Now, at the moment, just let me show you.
the normal YouTube home feed is quite generic. Like yeah, the videos you see on your home feed are created in a way that matches your previous viewer behavior, but it's not exactly very personalized, is it? It's just YouTube thinking this is what you want to watch.
And also like the normal way of searching the videos on YouTube is very generic too. Like it's not really that personalized because you're basically limited to what you can input in this really small search bar. And the results you get from making a search tend to be quite boring in the same way.
for everyone. Like if I was to type in how to grow on YouTube as a small channel in the travel space. All of these results come up here.
Like these are super broad videos that don't really speak to me or my problems specifically and directly. I would have to sit here and scroll for like 10 minutes just to find a couple of videos that might actually help. But if I posted that exact same question into Ask YouTube, it gives me such a super detailed answer that covers everything to do with growing a small channel.
in the travel space because the Gemini AI has basically used the prompt I gave it and then analyzed every single video on a platform to get the best match for my prompt. And if you look closely here, it's actually basically highlighted the exact section from within a video that best matches my query. And this is huge because I'm no longer wasting any time trying to find the information in the video.
And look, this is the exact direction YouTube is now heading in. Having your videos showing up here in the Ask YouTube feed. and custom home feeds is gonna be the number one way to grow a YouTube channel going forward.
So what exactly are the SEO tricks and how do you get your videos recommended at the top of places like these? Well, look, there are five new tips you can take with you going forward and I'm gonna explain them all now. So the very first thing you should do is shift from using singular keyword rankings to more whole topic rankings.
And what I mean by this is, before you could get away with just stuffing the same keyword in your video over and over and over again. Like I could stuff the YouTube algorithm keyword in my title, my thumbnail, my tags and hashtags and all that. And I'd basically rank quite high for that search term.
But now... this no longer works because when people search for videos related to the YouTube algorithm, they will search for more specific things like... How does a YouTube algorithm work for new channels?
Or how does a YouTube algorithm work for shorts, for example? And YouTube's new Ask YouTube feature will promote the videos that answer those specific questions better. So the videos that pop up are directly related to those questions, not because someone's just repeated the same YouTube algorithm keyword 10 times.
So when you're next planning a video, think beyond just using one generic keyword and try to actually understand all of... the different prompts that your content could potentially be a really good match for, like things that people input there and try and search for. Then the second new SEO trick is using shorts.
Now, a great thing about these new features is that shorts can also appear directly inside the results too, because YouTube understands that some people would rather just watch a short than a long form video to get an answer to something. So you should start thinking about your shorts as another piece of your SEO strategy, rather than treating them completely differently.
Now, for me, I did this in quite a simple way. Let's say when I created a long form food vlog in India. example on my travel page, within that video there was a really useful one or two minute section about a specific traditional Indian food in a specific part of that city.
Now I would basically take that section and turn it into a standalone short. I basically just identified and clipped up the most engaging sections of the long form videos and then posted them out. Now I know that clipping up long form videos into shorts might sound like daunting to some of you but a tool you could use for this is called Nexus Clips.
It's an AI tool built around clipping and it will automatically clip up your long film videos for you into multiple different shorts by picking out the most engaging or viral moments of your long film videos. So you can basically create extra bits of content around one specific topic. Now in the app you can also add captions, subtitles and much much more.
Now if you do want to check them out I'll leave all the links there down below. Then the third thing you need to do is write clear, descriptive video chapters on every video you post. Now, before, many gurus would tell you to write really vague chapters like method one, method two, method three, basically so that you wouldn't give away all of the information before people actually watch the video.
Now, that trick no longer works anymore, so stop doing it. YouTube themselves have specifically told creators that clear video chapters and descriptive titles help their... systems accurately match individual video segments, especially to viewer questions inside of Ask YouTube.
So going forward, you actually need to be really descriptive with your chapters and accurately describe exactly what each section is about. Don't use too many words. Like if you can keep it to around five words, that would be great.
But as you can see on my latest videos, I no longer do the method one, method two, method three. I now fully write mine out to give YouTube as much detail as possible. And you need to do the same thing going forward.
Even if you didn't originally use video chapters, you do need to now. This then brings us on to the fourth tip, which is to think about your video in segments. So when you design your video, before you record it, each major part of the video should have a clear subject or purpose or value.
Like this video you're watching right now, I basically open the first half discussing the new changes of YouTube and Gemini AI, and then I split the second half, which is this bit right now, into these five tips. And look, I always do this with my videos. I always segment them because Ask YouTube can now basically pick...
out a relevant part from within the video and start it at the timestamp that best matches what the viewer has asked for in Ask YouTube. Like this here, what you can see, this highlighted bit is basically what Ask YouTube has matched with the prompts that I put in and it's genius. And then finally, just make sure you're really clear about what you're actually discussing or doing in your video.
Like if you're reviewing a camera, for example, say the exact camera model. Like if you're talking about a destination, say the exact name of the place.
If you're discussing a game or if you're playing a game, talk about that game. Make that clear in the dialogue rather than constantly referring to everything as this, that or it. Now, you don't need to keep repeating the same keywords and talk like a robot, but you should naturally name things that you're discussing.
Like the amount of times I've said SEO in this video. you should know what I mean. And look, this matters because YouTube already confirms that every normal search now looks at how well the actual video content matches somebody's search alongside the title and description.
And it can also identify things like people and places from video transcripts. So the language you use inside your video is now another important source of context for the YouTube algorithm and its systems. Now, if you have any questions on any of those, please do just comment down below and I'll try my best to get back to you.
But on another note, for those of you who... are worried about the new YouTube algorithm monetization updates with the watch time going from 4 ,000 to 8 ,000 hours, which is a huge jump, you're going to need to try and reach 4 ,000 watch hours as fast as you possibly can before the 1st of Feb, 2027. So watch this video here where I'll show you exactly how to get there as quickly as possible.
You don't want to miss it. See you there.
