Big Idea
The argument in one line.
Claude Code can cut, caption, animate and sound-design a short-form video into a Premiere Pro timeline for a couple of dollars, which shifts the human's job from assembly to taste.
Who This Is For
Read if. Skip if.
READ IF YOU ARE…
A creator or business posting short-form video on Instagram or TikTok who wants more volume without hiring an editor for every clip.
A video editor already working in Premiere Pro who wants to see how an AI-built timeline can be tweaked by hand afterward.
Someone with a Claude subscription who has not tried Claude Code because they assume it needs programming experience.
SKIP IF…
You edit in DaVinci Resolve or CapCut only, since the whole workflow outputs a Premiere Pro project.
You want long-form editing, which the creator explicitly saves for a later video.
You want a one-prompt, one-shot edit: every example here took at least two rounds of feedback.
TL;DR
The full version, fast.
Rourke takes one 78-second iPhone take with repeated mistakes and has Claude Code edit it three ways: full-screen talking head, educational split screen, and a cinematic black-and-white podcast look. The setup is a project folder with footage, inspiration reels and sound effects. Claude extracts frames and a Whisper transcript, picks the best takes, cuts silences, writes graphics in code and builds a Premiere Pro timeline. Each style needed at least two feedback rounds in plain English. His take: AI handles about 80% of short-form edits, while high-end client work stays mostly human.

Atomic Insights
Lines worth screenshotting.
Claude cannot watch video, so it extracts every frame and a word-level transcript, and the whole edit is built from that list of words and timestamps.
When you flub a line three times, Claude uses the transcript to keep the final clean take, which cut a 78-second recording down to 21 seconds.
The inspiration folder matters most: drop in a reel you like and Claude breaks it down frame by frame for layout, captions, pacing and effects.
None of the graphics are AI-generated video. Claude writes them in code and renders them frame by frame, timed to the exact word spoken.
The deliverable is a Premiere Pro timeline with footage, captions and graphics on separate tracks, so you can hand-edit anything Claude gets wrong.
Every style took at least two iterations, and plain-English notes like 'calm it down, no flashes, no zooms' were enough to fix the first draft.
When graphics landed too low, a screenshot sent back to Claude let it diagnose Premiere's placement and rebuild each as a full-size transparent 1080x1920 file.
For words that sit behind the speaker's head, Claude cuts the person out of every frame with a built-in person-detection tool, replacing hours of manual rotoscoping.
Layered sound design from your own effects library saves roughly 30 minutes per short-form video, and avoids the same stock whooshes everyone uses.
The only required spend is Claude Code (the $20 a month plan at minimum) and Premiere Pro; no AI image or video subscriptions are needed.
Batch your revision notes: have Claude put everything on the Premiere timeline, review the whole project, then send all feedback in one go.
His split: AI can do about 80% of a typical edit, but top-tier client work flips to roughly 20% AI and 80% human because AI output is generic.
Takeaway
Claude assembles the edit and you supply the taste
WHAT TO LEARN
Claude Code turns footage, reference reels and a sound library into a fully editable Premiere timeline, so the human work moves from assembly to direction and judgment.
03Set up your project folder
Make one folder per video with three subfolders: base footage, inspiration clips and sound design. Brand assets can live here too.
The more sound effects you give Claude, the richer the sound design. The inspiration folder matters most for style.
04How Claude edits your footage
Claude extracts every frame and transcribes the audio with a free tool like Whisper, then builds the edit from that list of words and times.
It keeps the last, clean take and cuts silences, shrinking a 78-second recording to 21 seconds.
05Style 1: full-screen talking head
The first draft was too busy with flashes, zooms and film grain. Telling Claude to calm it down fixed it.
Graphics are code rendered to video frame by frame, and the output is a Premiere timeline with each element on its own track.
06Style 2: educational split screen
A graphic that changes about every second shows the viewer what is being said, so they never have to imagine it.
Sending Claude a screenshot of the misplaced graphics let it find Premiere's placement quirk and rebuild them as full-size transparent files.
07Style 3: cinematic podcast
Black-and-white grain, one-word-at-a-time captions and italic keyword highlights are recreated from a single reference clip.
Claude cuts the speaker out of each frame so words can sit behind the head, avoiding manual rotoscoping.
08Sound design
Give Claude your own effects packs and it layers whooshes, risers and impacts, saving about 30 minutes per video.
Claude can also add music with filters such as low-pass at chosen moments.
Glossary
Terms worth knowing.
Claude Code
A version of Claude that can read and write files on your own computer. It needs no coding experience to use for tasks like editing video.
Rotoscoping
Cutting a person out of video frame by frame so graphics or text can sit behind them. Done by hand it takes hours.
Whisper
A free speech-to-text tool that runs on your computer and writes out the dialogue with timing for each word.
Premiere Pro timeline
The layered sequence of footage, captions, graphics and audio in Adobe's editor. Claude builds it so you can adjust it by hand afterward.
Sound design
The whooshes, risers, impacts and music layered under a video to make cuts and graphics feel punchier.
See every word as it's spoken — crank it to 2× and still catch all of it. The same dual-channel trick behind Amazon's Kindle + Audible.

Claude can now edit your social media videos easier and cheaper than ever. It now only costs a couple of dollars per generation and you can complete your entire videos in 20 minutes. This means you can now produce high quality content at scale, which is a problem that every business is trying to solve right now.
The big question is, what becomes valuable when every video becomes easy to edit? And we'll answer that in today's video. We're also going to break down how you can use Claude to edit these three styles of videos.
One is yapping and talking to camera style videos. The second one is split screen educational content. And then three is the more advanced option, which we'll go through at the end of the video.
And for this masterclass, we'll break down how much everything costs. And I've taken no sponsor for today's video because I don't want any third party influence teaching how you actually get results with Claude right now. So there's only two things that you need to pay for.
this video tutorial. One is Claude Code and the other one is Premiere Pro. There's no AI image or video subscriptions required for you to edit your videos.
And if anyone claims otherwise, it's because they're doing a sponsored post with a company. You'll absolutely need at least the $20 a month subscription with Claude. If you're editing lots of videos, then you're going to need the next subscription tier higher than that.
So the part of Claude that we're going to be using is called Claude Code. Now this doesn't require any coding experience, so don't be put off. All Claude code is, is essentially Claude that has access to your files on your desktop computer.
It works on both Mac and Windows, and I'll leave an installation guide in the description so you can go and start using that right now. So to edit our videos with Claude, the first thing we're going to do is make a folder for the video. and then inside that folder we're going to make three more folders one with our base footage the other one for inspirational clips that we like the editing style of and the other one is for all of our sound design so in the sound design one you can upload any sound effects library packs that you've bought in the past or anything like that the more you have the more options claude has and the better and richer quality sound design you're going to get in your videos so the footage we're going to be using is just the raw clips that are filmed straight off your iPhone this could be off of a camera but for us we're doing vertical videos here so we're just using the footage that we've recorded on our iPhone and for all three examples in this video we're going to use the exact same take which is a video that I recorded which was 78 seconds long of me saying the same few lines over and over with mistakes in there because finding the best takes in your video is Claude's job now and if you're a business this folder is also where your brand identity lives so everything from your logo your fonts your color scheme
which means every video that Claude edits will come out looking like it's been edited by the same company. Now, the inspiration folder is the one that matters the most. So if you see a style on Instagram or TikTok that you love, you can download it and drop it in here.
And Claude will break it down frame by frame to work out the layout, the caption style, the pacing, the effects, and everything that's gone into that edit, which is kind of mental to say. I want to be really clear here that we're not stealing other people's videos. All we're doing here is taking the style and aesthetic from one video and applying it into the next.
So you want to take a bit from here and a bit from there so that you can carve out your own style. This is what we do naturally as creatives. AI is just enabling us to get there much quicker now.
So how does Claude actually edit the footage? So Claude can't actually watch videos like you or I do in the same way. So it does two things.
One is it pulls out every single frame in the video so it can... how you're framed in the scene, it can also detect where your face is, and it also knows where the empty space is in the scene. And then it listens to your audio and uses a free speech -to -text tool on your computer to actually write out all the dialogue.
And it will use a tool that's already built into Cloud Code to help it do this, or it will download a free tool like Whisper. And it builds the whole edit inside Premiere Pro for you. And if you go back and change something in Claude, it will just go and build you a new Premiere Pro timeline.
And then you can tweak it by hand if you want to, or just prompt again. And then it uses time codes and blocks out every single word in the video so it knows when you've said those specific things. And that list of words and times is exactly what the whole edit is built on.
So when I'm recording and I mess up my lines three times, it's listening to the transcript and then taking the end clip, which is usually when you nail it, and it's using that final take as the output that it uses for the real video edit. And that's also how it can cut out every silence in between cuts and takes. So that's 78.
second long video gets cut into a 21 second long final clip. And that's really important because every single second counts on Instagram and TikTok. So the first editing style of this video that we're going to go through is the full screen talking heads.
And this is just me talking to the camera and filling out the entire screen. Claude can now edit your Instagram videos for you. I'm talking cuts, captions, graphics, even sound design.
All you do is upload your footage to Claude with some references of what you want the video to look like, and Claude will do everything for you. It uses Claude code to build the entire edit inside of Premiere Pro, so you can tweak it however you like. So naturally in this video, my face sits quite high up in the frame.
The captions go one word at a time in the middle, just under my mouth. And at the bottom, there are these simple black boxes with graphics in them it's basically like a checklist that just ticks off as i say each thing now the first version claude made looked like this and honestly it was way too much it had flashes zooms film grain and it just kept jumping between full screen and split screen so it was a bit chaotic so i literally just told claude calm it down no flashes no zooms captions in the middle and simple checklists and then i also noticed that captions were touching my chin so i told it to fix that too and it then cropped it in around my face giving it the appropriate amount of run.
Now, this is the part that people don't expect. There's actually no AI video generation in any of this. Claude actually writes all of these graphics in code, and then it turns those into video files frame by frame, which is extremely clever.
And it does all of this on your computer for you. And every one of them is timed to the exact moment when I say a word. So then at the end, Claude doesn't just hand you like a flat video.
It hands you the Premiere Pro timeline. with the footage, the captions, the graphics and everything all laid out on its own tracks. So this gives you the full ability to edit and change everything by hand.
And honestly, that's the first style. Not very overwhelming and very simple to do. Now, let's say you want to do an evolution of these talking head style videos.
Let's move on to the next style, which is educational split screen content. So for this one, we gave Claude a reel from an educational creator that we liked, that we're super inspired by. And it's the typical...
style where there's a graphic in the top half and then the speaker is in the bottom half claude can now edit your instagram videos for you i'm talking cuts captions graphics even sound design all you do is upload your footage to claude with some references of what you want the video to look like and claude will do everything for you it uses claude code to build the entire edit inside of premiere pro so you can tweak it however you like And what Claude built here is a graphic in the top half that changes about every second matched to exactly what I'm saying.
So as you can see, the captions sit in this small black box, which is right on the line between the two halves of the split screen. And on the big words, it cuts to a full screen version of me with a close up of me. And this works really, really well for educational content because you're never asking your viewer to imagine anything.
You're literally showing it to them as you explain it. But again, the first version that came back from Claude. still had problems so all of the top half graphics were sitting too low as you can see here and they were covering my head so to fix it i sent claude a screenshot that you can see here and it worked out that premiere pro was placing them differently from how i expected it and it remade everyone as a full -size see -through file so they now land exactly in the right place so that's our second style and now the third one is definitely a little bit more technical and this is one where i was unbelievably shook that claude could actually do this so for this one the reference that i took was this black and white podcast clip and you may have seen clips on social media of like clipped up podcasts or like crazy edits that you've seen and i was like i want to see what claude can do to create and automate these so this is what claude made from the same bit of footage claude can now edit your instagram videos for you i'm talking cuts captions graphics even sound design all you do is upload your footage to claude with some references
of what you want the video to look like and claude will do everything for you it uses claude code to build the entire edit inside of premiere pro so you can tweak it however you like so as you can see it's black and white with like this dark moody film grainy sort of look and the captions kind of get built one word at a time to build out the sentences which is a really cool effect and it even highlights keywords in like this sort of elegant italic style which you see a lot on social media and as you can see the white text actually flips the color of whatever is behind it just like the reference that we gave it.
But check this out. This is my favorite bit. Some of the words actually sat behind my head.
And so to do that, Claude cut me out of every single frame automatically using the person detection tool that's built into the Mac. And if you're on Windows, it also works as well. It uses a free tool to do the exact same job.
So that way you don't have to rotoscope or spend hours doing crazy rotoing. Claude can now do all of that for you in minutes. And then to tie it all together, it layered all the words in, in between me and the background.
Now let's talk about the sound design on a crazy project like this, because Claude can now automate the entire process of this as well. And I was honestly mind blown at how good this is, because now it genuinely saves us individually on our projects about 30 minutes of work. per short form video that we do and also long form videos as well.
Now, obviously sound matters a lot on short form platforms. A lot of creators use the same whoosh effects, the same risers, and it honestly gets very repetitive and boring, but this is gonna be a really great way that you can create like diverse, different sound design on all your projects that feels premium and high quality.
So you can give Claude your own folder of sound effects, which is what we did for the whooshes. And I actually paid five. hundred pounds or about seven hundred dollars to ocular sound which in my opinion is the best sound effects pack library that exists on the internet it has the coolest sound design and you can download all of those and then give it to claude and then it can actually have a reference of all of that sound design and then it can layer it inside your projects they have everything from whooshes risers impact moments everything in there i'll also leave a link to ocular sound i'm not affiliated with them whatsoever genuine recommendation i wholeheartedly love claude can actually also make sound design itself with code Mind -blowing, but yes, it can actually design its own sound design and add that into but I like to use my own library of sound effects I just get better results You can also give music as well and Claude can add in music and it can also add in effect like low -pass effects or any sort of like You know filter that you want to add on the music at certain moments You can just ask Claude to do it and it will do it for you kind of mental now I obviously have to be very honest.
None of these videos came out perfect first time around I had to go through multiple iterations to get the right version. Each one took at least two iterations to get to the final output that I needed.
So with your feedback that you're giving to Claude for those iterations, you know, I highly recommend that you just use plain, you know, natural English, simple references. Make this arrow bigger here. Change the size of the text here.
And a bonus tip that I'll give you is actually get Claude to put all of it in the timeline, like your Premiere Pro timeline for you, so you can review your entire project. with Claude together and then give all those notes in one go. So as I promised I'd break down how much it costs to edit all three of these different videos and you can see here underneath the videos how much each video costs for me to edit and you can compare that to a human editor.
It's a significantly cheaper investment and much more time effective too. Now let's answer what becomes valuable when every video is easy to edit. I'm gonna say that human editing will become more valuable than ever.
My hot take is that AI can probably do 80 % of the work on your edits now. And it's really about 20 % human work that you need to do to help get your project over the line.
Now with professional work, and when I say professional, I mean high -end client work. I mean really, really top -end. Doing work for like some of the biggest creators on the platform, obviously that ratio is actually probably gonna be more flipped, where it's 20 to 80.
AI just creates the most generic output. So in order to get outputs that stand out, you're going to need more of that 20 % AI, 80 % human edited in order to create something that is compelling and stands out. But for short form video, we're definitely going to see that pendulum swing much more towards 80 % AI, 20 % human.
Why? Because scale and posting frequently and consistently on socials is what the algorithms want. off of volume, testing things, trying to fail quicker so you can learn what works with your audience much quicker is really the game of short form platforms.
So use this as a tool in your arsenal. But if you are creating longer form content, I definitely think that there is a lot that you can do with this. And in our next video, we'll definitely break down how you can use this for long form editing videos.
But this is our short form breakdown just for now. Now, if you are a video editor looking to build your career as a creative, I've built GenHQ, which is a hiring platform that you can go and sign up to and build your portfolio.
