Big Idea
The argument in one line.
A free, open-source Claude Code skill can read a live Google Ads account, surface 200+ specific ways it is wasting money, and fix most of them automatically once a human approves the plan.
Who This Is For
Read if. Skip if.
READ IF YOU ARE…
You run or manage Google Ads for a local service business (plumbing, home services, events) and haven't audited the account in months.
You're spending real money on Google Ads every month but have never confirmed conversion tracking is actually working.
You already use Claude Code and want a concrete, non-software example of pointing it at a business system instead of a codebase.
SKIP IF…
You run e-commerce ads, not local service ads; this checklist is built specifically for lead-gen businesses, not online stores.
You don't have access to change your own Google Ads account or website, such as an agency client with no CMS access.
TL;DR
The full version, fast.
Claude Code can run a full Google Ads audit from a single slash command, reading an account's settings, campaigns, ads, landing pages, and keyword data to flag over 200 things quietly costing money. The creator runs it against his own six-year-old account and shows real findings: no Google Maps ads despite 8.4x more clicks than search, phone calls that were never tracked as conversions, an optimization score that rewards spending more instead of profit, a hidden location setting that lets clicks come from other countries, and broad match keywords paying for searches like 'plumbing school.' The tool proposes fixes; a human approves, and it executes them.

07 · Fix First: Google Maps Ads
Google Maps ads get 8.4x the clicks of search ads; not running them is a top-priority gap.
04:45 – 06:00
08 · Fix First: Untracked Phone Calls
The account wasn't tracking phone calls as conversions; Claude Code can generate the tracking goals automatically if it can reach the site.
06:00 – 07:08
09 · Account-Level Negative Keywords
Applying negative keywords at the account level blocks irrelevant searches like 'plumbing school' across every campaign at once.
07:08 – 08:04
10 · Turn Off Google's Optimization Score
The optimization score's recommendations are tuned to increase spend, not profit; the creator recommends turning most of it off.
08:04 – 09:43
11 · Campaigns: Kill Display + Search Partners
Display Network and Search Partners produce cheap but low-quality leads for local service accounts; the creator tracks profit, not click volume.

Atomic Insights
Lines worth screenshotting.
Claude Code audited a six-year-old Google Ads account, found 127 errors, and fixed all of them automatically after one approval.
The audit checks over 200 items across five failure points: the account, campaigns and ad groups, the ads themselves, the landing pages, and keywords and search terms.
Google Maps ads get roughly 8.4 times more clicks than regular search ads, so skipping them is one of the biggest lost opportunities in a local ad account.
An account that isn't tracking phone calls as conversions is running blind: no data means no way to know which spend is actually working.
Google's account-level optimization score rewards spending more money, not making more profit, so a low score is often a good sign, not a bad one.
The Display Network and Search Partners generate cheap clicks for local service businesses, but those leads rarely convert into paying customers.
Google Ads defaults new campaigns to a 'presence or interest' location setting instead of 'presence,' which lets people outside the actual service area click and cost money.
Broad match keywords let Google's algorithm bid on loosely related searches, so a wedding DJ can end up paying for clicks on 'birthday party planners' or a plumber can pay for 'plumbing school.'
Pinning a headline that matches the exact search term is a simple ad-strength lever most accounts never bother to use.
A landing page that takes 10 seconds to load loses the visitor before they ever see the offer, since slow pages don't get a second chance from paid traffic.
The safest posture for an AI audit tool is read-only-by-default: it proposes 200+ fixes, but nothing changes on the account until a human approves the batch.
Takeaway
Where a Google Ads account actually leaks money, and how to check.
WHAT TO LEARN
A local-service Google Ads account bleeds money at five specific layers, and most of the leaks (untracked calls, junk location settings, broad match, a spend-hungry optimization score) are checkable in minutes once you know to look.
02Three Reasons This Is Worth Doing
You're already spending money on Google Ads every month, so any leak an audit finds is money recovered immediately, not money you have to go earn first.
A systematic, 200+ item checklist reliably surfaces errors that a manual review, even a careful one, tends to miss.
03The Five Places An Account Bleeds Money
Money leaks at five levels: the account itself, campaigns and ad groups, the ads, the landing pages, and the keywords and search terms driving traffic to them.
A fix at one level, like better keywords, can't compensate for a leak at another, like an untracked conversion.
05The Audit At A Glance: 200+ Checks
A single audit run can surface 200+ discrete findings, ranked with the highest dollar-impact items first so you fix the expensive leaks before the cheap ones.
This checklist style of audit is tuned for local service businesses; e-commerce accounts need a different set of checks.
06One Word Runs Everything: /audit
Showing the plan before acting, and only executing once a human approves it, is what makes it safe to let an automated tool touch a live ad account.
A well-built audit process can compress a multi-hour manual review into a single command, provided the checklist behind it was built carefully.
07Fix First: Google Maps Ads
Google Maps ads get roughly 8.4x the clicks of regular search ads for the same local search, so not running them is one of the highest-leverage gaps to close.
Local service businesses compete in three separate ad slots on one search results page: local service ads, regular search ads, and map ads, so skipping any one leaves clicks on the table.
08Fix First: Untracked Phone Calls
If phone calls aren't set up as a tracked conversion, the account has no idea which keywords or ads actually produce leads.
Conversion tracking needs the tool to actually reach the website; on locked-down platforms like Squarespace, that automated setup can't be completed.
09Account-Level Negative Keywords
Negative keywords applied at the account level block irrelevant searches, like 'plumbing school' or 'plumbing jobs,' across every campaign at once instead of needing to be added per campaign.
A keyword can match a search that's topically related but will never become a customer, so relevance alone isn't a good enough bar for bidding on it.
10Turn Off Google's Optimization Score
Google's account optimization score is tuned to reward more ad spend, not more profit, since Google gets paid per click regardless of whether that click converts.
A high optimization score correlating with worse account performance is a documented pattern, not just a contrarian opinion.
11Campaigns: Kill Display + Search Partners
The Display Network and Search Partners can produce cheaper leads for a local service business, but those leads convert into paying customers far less often than standard search or map campaigns.
Tracking cost-per-acquisition and actual profit matters more than tracking click-through rate or lead volume alone.
12Budget, Locations, And The Hidden Setting
Campaigns that are already outperforming average deserve more budget, since a proven return on ad spend scales better than spreading budget evenly.
Google Ads' location targeting defaults to a 'presence or interest' option, often marked recommended, that lets people anywhere in the world click your ads even though they'll never become local customers.
13Ads: Headlines, Pinning, And Ad Assets
Pinning a headline that matches the literal search term increases relevance and ad strength for that specific query.
Ad assets, like call buttons, sitelinks, and callouts such as star ratings or upfront pricing, make an ad take up more space in results, which correlates with a higher click-through rate.
14Landing Pages: Speed, Clarity, Click-To-Call
A landing page that takes too long to load loses the visitor to the next competitor in the search results before it even finishes rendering.
A local service landing page needs to immediately show the service offered, the location served, and a clickable phone number, or visitors bounce from ambiguity.
15Keywords: Broad Match Pays For Junk Clicks
Broad match lets Google's algorithm bid on any search it judges related, which can include searches for services the business doesn't even offer.
Every irrelevant broad-match keyword that generates a click should get added to the negative keyword list so the account stops paying for it going forward.
Glossary
Terms worth knowing.
Negative keyword
A search term you tell Google Ads to never show your ad for, even if it's related to your regular keywords, so you stop paying for clicks that won't convert.
Broad match
A keyword setting where Google's algorithm can show your ad for any search it judges related to your keyword, which often pulls in irrelevant, low-value clicks.
Optimization score
Google Ads' own percentage rating of an account, built from recommendations that generally push toward spending more, not necessarily earning more profit.
Search Partners / Display Network
Google ad placements outside its main search results (partner sites and the broader web) that can produce cheap clicks but often lower-quality leads for local service businesses.
Conversion tracking
The setup that tells Google Ads when a click actually became a phone call or form submission, so the account can tell which spend produces real leads.
Ad strength / pinning
Google's rating of how well an ad's headlines and descriptions are optimized; pinning locks a specific headline into a fixed position, such as matching the literal search term.

So what we're looking at here is an audit of an existing six -year -old Google ad account. What happened was Cloud Code. automatically found and then immediately fixed 127 errors that were costing us a tremendous amount of money.
And then it found dozens more that we can go ahead and fix if we want to as well. Let me give you three reasons why this may just be the quickest win that you can implement with Google Ads today. Reason number one is that you're already spending thousands of dollars on Google Ads at this very moment every single month.
And you're probably literally lighting that money on fire or tossing it out the window. This audit is towards helping you uncover all the ways that you're hemorrhaging money and then fixing it so you can get the cheapest leads or sales possible number two is that if you were to do this stuff manually it would take an incredible amount of time and you probably just don't have that time number three is that even if you did have the time to do it you're probably not gonna surface all of the mistakes and errors that cloud code is going to pull out for you so in this video today we're gonna give you the blueprints okay that took me a tremendous amount of time and then we're gonna walk through the five ways that you might be hemorrhaging money at the account level, at the campaign and ad group level, at the ads level, at the landing page level, and at the keywords and search terms level.
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Jono. I've created two seven -figure businesses. The previous business I sold spent $187 ,000 on Google Ads, and we were able to generate conversion rates of up to 20%.
So what we're going to be doing today is going through this entire audit, and there's going to be four sections to this video. Number one is we're going to be going through the audit at a glance, just so you can see how comprehensive this actually is.
Then we're going to be going through all the five sections so you can see real examples of how this saves money. Then we're going to be going forward and setting this up. And the setting up part has two components to it.
Number one is I'm going to teach you how you can grab the blueprints really quickly and run the audit, but you also have to connect in Google ads to cloud code. And that's probably like a 10 or so minute setup. And I'm going to link to an additional video that I produced three months ago that got 215 ,000 reviews.
And this is going to walk you through step by step, click by click, exactly how you can connect Cloud Code into Google Ads and get this up and running as quickly as possible. So at a glance, there's over 200 different things like you can see here that Cloud is going through at our account level. Now, just a couple points worth mentioning.
This is aimed at local service businesses. So if you have a different business model, like e -commerce or something else just take it with a grain of salt because you will have to adjust this slightly and there's multiple components to this audit okay first of all cloud is going to uncover everything for you and then it's going to automatically well it's going to show you that and as long as you approve the plan it's going to automatically change the vast majority of things i would recommend you taking a look and making sure you're happy with the results and if there's something that you're not happy with you can always say no and it won't go ahead and update all of that kind of stuff okay and And also just keeping in mind that this is reading your account.
It's not necessarily trained on your full business. So sometimes Claude may need additional context from you. And if so, it will go ahead and ask you questions.
All right. So we're going to go through this whole audit together. But before we do that, I just want to point out two things.
Number one is it's exceptionally easy to run. And we're going to talk about the setup later in this video. But once you've gone through the setup, all you have to do is type slash audit.
And then this is going to run the whole thing. Everything you... see here is just from literally one word.
And the reason why it's so simple is because it took me weeks to build this blueprint that I'm giving you for free. And this blueprint contains all the ingredients to be able to run this right the first time. Okay.
Number two is that there is over 200 findings in this report. We're not going to be going through all 200. We're going to be going over around two examples for every single section, which brings us to the first section, which is what we need to fix first.
I'm going to go through two examples on. this number two and number three here and you can see claude actually went through and solved pretty much every single one of these automatically itself so you're not reaching the google map advertisements so if we head over to google and we type in something like toronto plumber okay there's three different ads that we could service for here local service ads which are these guys right up top here then you have regular search ads which are these ones over here and then you have the third one which we're talking about which is is the Google map advertisements right over here.
If you're not ranking for these, if you don't set it up, this is a huge lost opportunity because statistically there's 8 .4 times the amount of clicks on google maps than there are on regular search ads so if you don't set these up you're missing out big time the next thing is that on this report it's saying that this ad account isn't even tracking phone calls okay which is a big no -no because if you don't track okay conversions you're effectively blind you have no idea how you can improve your account and get more leads for a cheaper price fundamentally when you're running google there's one thing that you want to do, and that is to make more money than you're spending, right?
To make profit. And so that materializes in two forms. If you're an e -commerce company, you sell products online.
If you're a service business, you generate leads. Generating leads comes in two forms, okay? Number one is somebody calls you, or number two, somebody fills out a form.
And what Claude is able to do is automatically, first of all, generate the goals for us, like this tracking. And if it has... to our website, it can go ahead and automatically add the conversion tracking for us.
That kind of stuff used to take like three or four or five hours for me to do it, always run into roadblocks. Now, Cloud can just take care of it automatically for you. the caveat being is that cloud actually has to have access to your website to be able to do that if you're on something like squarespace where cloud can't access it it can't change anything okay let's move on to the next section here which is the account section and we've already gone through one of the things here which is conversion tracking but another thing here worth mentioning is account negatives so if you head over to google ads you go to admin and you go to account settings we have these negative keywords that we want to apply to every single one of our campaigns and ad groups.
Let me give you an example of why this matters. So let's take the same plumbing example. If somebody, okay, types in plumbing here, there's a lot of keywords that you could be ranking for that will never materialize into paying customers, which means you're literally throwing money out the window.
So for example, you could be ranking for plumbing school, okay? Or you could be ranking for plumbing jobs. These people are looking for jobs.
They're looking for an education. They're not looking to spend $1 ,000 on a plumbing service or whatever the cost may be. Right.
So if you rank for those. that will you will spend money on clicks that will never materialize into paying customers okay and so what we want to do at the account level is throw on negative keywords that we do that we never want to rank for across any campaigns that we ever run okay one of my other favorite ones at the account level here and again there's just so much to go over is google ads optimization scores so what's going on here is google says great job you're 76 .5 off optimized.
Let's get you to a hundred percent. But the problem is, is they're optimizing for you to spend more money. Okay.
So that they become more profitable, not necessarily for you to be more profitable yourself. Google's incentive is to extract every penny possible from you so that they can make more money and essentially drag you along so that you at least keep spending money next month. So they get a paycheck.
There's multiple studies online that indicate the higher your optimization score, the worse your results on your Google ad account. And therefore, I would just turn all of this kind of stuff off. And instead of navigating through this user interface jungle, trying to figure out how to actually do this kind of stuff, I would just get Cloud Code to automatically turn it off for you, which it's fully capable of doing.
Let's head over to the campaign ad group section. So right away, this report is going to generate a table that you can view at the campaign level, ad group level, location, and device level to see what's working, okay? And then what's not working so you know where to...
double and triple down your efforts to save money. Now there's going to be a tremendous amount of opportunities to improve your ad account and Claude will go through most of this, but I'm just going to give you a couple examples here. So instead of, you know, spending, let's say your Saturday mornings going through Google ad campaign settings, which I'm sure you probably don't want to do because there's probably a million things you'd rather do with your time.
We can get Claude to optimize all of this. So just a couple examples here. Like if you start optimizing for the display network, work as a local service business, you might get cheaper leads, you might get cheaper clicks, but those leads that you generate are often junk and they don't convert into paying customers nearly as much as other campaign types like just regular search campaigns or regular map campaigns or local service ads right up top here.
And so I personally just turn that off, okay? And I personally track down to the dollar how much money I'm making across my campaigns. The click -through rate of the conversion rate.
which is somebody becoming a lead on your website is not the main motive that I'm tracking. I'm tracking, am I making a profit at the end of the day? How much money am I actually generating from these Google ads?
Okay. So that's why I default to turning off, for example, the search network and display network, because it ranks for other Google sites and just junk places that don't materialize and depend customers. Next thing is, is budget.
It's going to optimize the budget. So if you have something, for example, that's actually doing super well, like take a look at this campaign here or here.
They're doing better than average, right? You could spend more money, which will get you a higher return on investment from the campaigns that are actually doing well. other things are location for example here you want to make sure as a local service provider you're actually ranking in the main cities and municipalities that you offer those services in and my favorite thing about this is the location setting down here is hidden you have to toggle it and you have two options and by default google ads will choose the wrong one for you it even says recommended down here and i can tell you right now this is not something that i would ever recommend because this is going to bleed you dry what you want to do is not follow the recommendations that will make you spend more money at your own expense.
Here's what this means. Let's say you run a plumbing business in Germany. With the presence you're interested in, that means that people from Mongolia can click on your ads and cost you money.
People in China can click on your ads and cost you money. People in Ethiopia can click on your ads and cost you money. Really what you want to do is you only want people to click on your ads if they're actually in the freaking city that you offer those services in.
Otherwise, it's just a waste of click that's gonna cost you money and Google is happy to charge you but ultimately speaking yeah you just want presence because this is people that actually live in the location you're servicing those ads okay so again one out of many recommendations here next thing is the actual ads and ad assets so when we take a look at our ads we want to make sure that we optimize these like for example the headlines are good and the descriptions are good and we're actually implementing all of the headline recommendations that we can.
We're pinning certain headlines that make sense to have at the beginning of the headline that match the search term somebody's typing in. So for example, if somebody types in Plumber Toronto, you probably want to have in the search results some variation of Plumber Toronto because that's what they're effectively looking for and so on and so forth.
Okay, so Claude is going to help you optimize for this kind of stuff and is also capable of generating Google ad assets as well. well, like images, business names, logos, and things like call out structured snippets. If all of this is gibberish to you, let me give you a really concise example.
So on your Google ads, you have the headline and you also have the description that you can add ad assets, which are additional properties to your ads, like the ability for somebody to give you a call automatically without clicking onto your landing page, or for example, having additional links they can click or having benefits like we're 4 .9.
are rated, we have upfront pricing. And the idea here is the more space that your ads take up, generally speaking, the higher the click -through rate is, okay? Now, the caveat here is that this audit isn't trained on your whole business and it may not write the world's best persuasive ad headlines or descriptions.
This is just going to help you understand where you're bleeding money and how to fix it. And it can go ahead and implement those fixes. In my paid community over here, there's a 17 part series that walks you through how to get the right context, the right keywords, the right landing pages, campaigns, ad creation, and so on and so forth.
You can grab all this kind of stuff online. a free trial if you're interested in taking it a bit further okay so let's move on from the ads and ad assets and and head over to the next section which is all about landing pages at the end of the day when you're running something like search ads over here you're only as good as the landing pages you send traffic to so if the landing pages suck people are going to click on it and then not convert into a pay or a lead that you can turn into a paying customer so what our audit is going to do is uncover ways you could optimize it so for example what how long is it taking for somebody to actually load your page if it takes 10 seconds somebody isn't going to wait 10 seconds for it to load they're going to bounce and what they're going to do is they're going to head over to the next business okay inquire with them instead of waiting 10 seconds or 20 seconds or whatever the case is for you another thing is is on the landing page you should make sure that they can see immediately the location that you're in if you're a local service provider and
also the service you're actually offering. If your page is ambiguous or vague and people don't really understand what it is you're doing, they're likely to bounce. Okay.
Also making sure that we have a phone number that's actually clickable and a place where somebody can actually inquire to become a lead. So the landing page module will go through all of this to help you optimize even more. Okay.
Now the last thing is keywords and search terms. And again, a lot of stuff to cover. Let me give you the most important example here.
Okay. So a lot of the times by default, Google will push you into something called broad match keywords.
What this means is that Google uses their machine learning algorithm to pull in similarly related keywords that you could otherwise have your ads appear for. Okay. So this is a keyword that an ad like this would appear for.
Now the problem is, is that they pull in a bunch of BS keywords that are never going to materialize into paying customers. So in this campaign, it's for wedding DJs in Toronto. Okay.
Take a look at these keywords. that broad matches allowing me to rank for best speaker rental birthday decorations near me birthday in toronto birthday party at your house birthday party planners i don't even offer these services so i'm paying for clicks and leads that would never be able to be converted into a paying customer because i literally don't even provide the service so you've got to be super careful with your keywords and search terms and this report is going to pull those out and help add on keywords like services that you don't even offer to your negative keyword list so that you're not paying for clicks that aren't going to materialize into paying customers.
All right. Now with that out of the way, let's go ahead and actually set this up so that Claude can audit your accounts and then fix pretty much everything. So in the description of this video, there is going to be a link to my free school community.
Once you click on that link, it'll take you to a page like this. All you have to do is scroll down to the bottom and click on the GitHub repository. Okay.
It's going to direct you over to a page like this. And all you have to do is click the green button called. this link right here that we're going to copy is the blueprint to run this audit.
So we'll go ahead and copy that. And now I'm going to walk through the process of installing Cloud Code if you're brand new so that you know exactly how to run this. We're going to open up a new tab in Google and type in VS Code.
And we're going to click the first link and download this free application. Now with VS Code, it's a coding editor, makes it sound way scarier than it actually is. As long as you're able to communicate back and forth with Cloud here, you're going to be good to go to follow this tutorial.
So once we've gone ahead and opened up VS code, we can click clone, get repo here, and then paste that link right into the search bar at the top. Okay. We're going to clone this.
Okay. And what's going to happen is it's going to say, we need to save this to a particular file on our computer. I'm going to choose the download folder here.
And the next thing it's going to do is actually open up that file for us. We can go ahead and open it up. And now we have.
the blueprints ready to go right over here where cloud code comes into the picture is it's an extension that lives inside of vs code so on the left hand sidebar here you can see these four squares we'll click on that type in claude code at the top and the first extension we are going to install once we've done that we should have access to cloud code right over here we can open it up and for the rest of this video we are going to be communicating back and forth with claude code in the conversation tab right over here okay and All we need to do is now connect Cloud Code into Google Ads and then we can run the audit skill and we're done.
Cool, now in order to go ahead and connect Cloud Code into Google Ads, the only step that we need to do is watch another YouTube video that I published for free. It's my hour -long Cloud Code masterclass. And that sounds scary because I said an hour there, but the whole integration part is really only five to 10 minutes.
You have to set it up one time and then throughout the whole career you have with Google Ads. it could save dozens, if not hundreds of hours worth of time creating and optimizing your Google ad account. So I'm going to link over here, watch this.
And then once you've gone ahead and integrated cloud code into Google ads, and you've downloaded the repo, like we just did right now, then you're going to be able to run one command and get the report back. And all that is, is the command audit. And if you have multiple Google ad accounts, let's say for business A and business B, all you do is you type in the actual company that want to audit and then claude is going to connect into that particular account and run the audit so i'm going to fire this off and what it will return back is an audit that looks exactly like this it's going to be customized to your business and it's going to show you all the findings and once you're happy with it you say hey go ahead and change everything and then it will systematically work through the entire audit checking off everything as it goes so that is it for this video guys if you're interested in learning more about Google ads and cloud code.
I have an entire 17 part series in my paid school community, which literally goes through everything like automated keyword research, setting up your account, landing pages, campaigns, ads, connecting your account into Google maps and local search ads, and even optimizing things like search terms or ad testing. And then I'm going to be rolling out a month to, to go even further into optimization.
The best part is, is you can get started completely for free on a seven day free trial. Thank you very much. much guys for watching this video.
I hope you enjoyed and I will see you in the next one. Bye -bye.
