02Playhead stays in place
In the Color Page, the playhead used to snap back to frame 1 every time you switched to a new clip on a different layer; 21.1 fixes it so the playhead holds its position across layer switches.
The fix shipped because a user filed a detailed forum request explaining the exact workflow pain, a reminder that specific, well-documented bug reports actually move software roadmaps.
03Edit page updates
The Inspector now supports saved effects presets: lock in a scale or position value once, save it as a preset, and apply the exact same adjustment to other clips instead of re-keying it by hand.
You can save presets two ways: as individual parameters, or as a full group preset covering every setting in the panel at once.
Fusion parameters can now be batch-edited across multiple selected clips at once, so changing a font on every text-plus title in a timeline no longer means opening each clip individually.
The font browser now renders a live preview using your actual title text instead of a generic sample string, making font selection for on-screen text faster to judge.
04Trim editor
The new trim editor replaces the old filmstrip layout with a compact viewer you can click directly on to select the A-side, B-side, or the roll-edit middle, then click-drag on the frame itself to trim.
Hitting W is a three-in-one shortcut: it selects the nearest edit point, switches you into ripple-to-timeline trim mode, and turns on cut-preview looping, so pressing spacebar immediately previews the trim in a loop.
J and L nudge the trim backward and forward while your eyes stay on the viewer instead of the timeline, and U cycles which side is being trimmed if you'd rather not remember the mouse zones.
The down arrow advances to the next cut down the timeline while keeping you in trim mode, so a full pass of trims can be done without leaving the tool.
05Multicam
The multicam viewer is now sticky: it stays open even if you jump to the Color page and back, instead of resetting every time you leave the Edit page.
Multicam clips can now be flattened or decomposed with an assignable hotkey, which used to require digging through a menu.
You can split a multicam clip at timecode gaps during creation, which keeps clips shorter when batch-syncing a large group of source cameras.
A new normalized waveform display and an on-timeline clip-duration overlay mean you can read exact clip length and relative levels without marking clips or opening a separate window.
06Data burn-in per track layer
Burn-in overlays can now target a specific video track rather than applying globally, so a multi-layer VFX composite can carry different timecode or filename burn-in per layer.
This is set from the Burn In Field's own panel: pick the token, like source timecode, then choose which video track it should render onto.
07Compare Timelines window
Right-click any timeline that isn't currently open and choose 'Compare with Current Timeline' to diff it against whatever timeline you're actively working in.
Changed clips get a visible badge icon, and a dropdown lets you swap which timeline is the comparison source without closing the compare view.
Accepting a change is a single right-click that pulls the difference down into your active working timeline, turning timeline reconciliation into a browsing task instead of a manual re-edit.
0821.1 Fusion updates
The point tracker has new buttons to delete bad track data from the playhead forward, backward, or entirely, so cleaning up a bad track no longer requires opening the spline editor.
You can now change a tracker's reference frame after tracking is already done, letting one tracker be reused against a different clean plate or stabilized frame.
09Supervised camera trackers
The camera tracker can now ingest manually-supervised points from the point tracker, letting you add reliable tracking points on objects the automatic solver would normally discard.
Because the point tracker uses AI to follow objects rather than just contrast, a manually-placed point can also anchor an object with point-cloud export in situations plain contrast-tracking can't handle.
10Manual lens undistort
The Lens Distort node has a new draw-on calibration mode: add a lines calibration type, then click along things that should be straight in the shot to calibrate correction.
The correction from this node is reversible, which matters for comping real-world lenses since you can dial distortion removal in and back out without baking in a destructive result.
11Photo page color panel control
The Photo page now supports micro color panels for lift/gamma/gain wheel control and for navigating between photos in an album, extending panel-based grading beyond the Color page.

In a live test, the AI agent opened the correct project from a vague spoken description, ran automatic subtitles, and reframed a timeline to vertical 9x16 using Resolve's built-in AI smart-reframe, all from a chat window.
The first reframe attempt didn't fill the frame correctly, but a short follow-up instruction in chat fixed the scaling, a realistic preview of how much back-and-forth agentic editing still takes.
The same session converted the clip to black and white and exported it for social media without the editor touching the Resolve UI directly, showing the agent can chain multiple edit operations in one conversation.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a connector standard: it exposes an application's existing published API to an external AI tool so the AI doesn't have to be separately taught that software's automation interface.
Resolve's scripting API isn't new; what's new is a standardized bridge that lets current agentic tools like Claude and Codex reach that same API without custom integration work per tool.
Shipping this as an open connector instead of bundling paid generative-AI credits means the software's business model doesn't depend on token consumption, so using or ignoring the AI features doesn't change what you already paid for.

DaVinci Resolve 21 .1 has a lot of refinements to the existing tools we already use on a daily basis. But now there's an official dedicated MCP server. That's a way to communicate directly with AI assistants like Claude.
And I will talk about that towards the end. But what this new release really tells me is that Blackmagic Design truly listens to customers for quality of life upgrades. One of the top requested changes was on the color page.
See, now the playhead stays in place when I change to a new clip on a different layer. Check out the forum post requesting this update, and this alone proves that they listen. But first, let's talk about the edit page updates.
The edit page inspector now has effects presets. This means that after you've set the perfect scale or position value, you can save it as a user preset and then apply it to other clips. This has options to save the individual parameters as a preset, or if you look at the top in that three dot option menu, you can save all the changes in the panel like a group preset.
While we're in the inspector the fusion parameters can now be changed in batch on multiple clips So you want to change the font on multiple text plus clips on your timeline? No problem and even the font browser can display the actual text used in your title How about this new ability to view the full native source aspect ratio of clips in the left source monitor, even when cutting them down to a vertical 9x16 timeline?
Now note, this only works when your external ultra studio or your decklink reference monitor is disabled. Perhaps my favorite upgrade is the new trim editor. Now the old trim editor, it took up a lot of extra space for a film strip that was on the bottom.
but the new trim editor is very similar to Avid. You can actually click on the image in the viewer to select the A side, the B side, or the middle for a roll edit. But what DaVinci Resolve does that takes us even further is the ability to click, hold, and drag with your cursor on the side you want to trim.
And that will actually trim it. It's like a big old target to manipulate the trimmed frames. And it works really great.
The best way to activate the new trim editor is by hitting W on the keyboard. And that's going to launch you to dynamic trim mode. You'll notice as soon as you hit W, a few things are going to happen.
One, it's going to select the nearest edit for you. And two, it's going to automatically put you in trim edit. edit mode.
That means you're in ripple to timeline mode. It means when you trim, it's going to change the overall timeline duration. And then three, looping is turned on so you can preview the cut over and over as you refine it.
So to do that, all you need to do is to hit space bar to preview the cut and you can make dynamic changes with J to go backwards or L to trim forwards while keeping your eyes focused directly on the viewer. Now, if you want to change the A, B or roll sides with the keyboard, just tap U. That's the short cut that's going to cycle around the selections or if you're like me you might want to set a custom hotkey assignment to directly target the a b or middle of the edit point to do that just search for nearest in the keyboard customization window and when you're all done and satisfied with your cut just tap the down arrow on the keyboard to refine the next cut down on the timeline and you're going to stay in that trim editor mode The multicam viewer will now persist even if you open up the color page and then return again.
It's a sticky viewer now. Basically, it's now controlled with the new button that's on that right record timeline viewer, or you can use, there's a default hotkey of shift command and then the slash key, the one that's above return. Also, these multicams, you can now flatten or decompose them with an assignable hotkey.
You just want to look for flattened multicam clip. Also with the multicam creation, you can now split a multicam at gaps when you use timecode. This can help keep your multicam clips shorter when you batch sync a lot of different clips.
Check out the timeline viewing options. There's now a new display scaled waveforms, which is going to help with visibility. It basically it doesn't change the volume.
It just makes it easier to edit because you can see them normalized like visually. Something I'm super pumped about is this new display clip durations timeline option to view the clip length directly on timeline clips. Just like in Avid, this gives you the ability to know instantly how long a clip is because sometimes things need to be exact and this really saves you the step from having to mark the clip to figure that out.
If you haven't already noticed, the playhead got a similar upgrade to Autodesk Flame with the little bump notch out on there. It helps indicate which clip the auto select is controlling. So the selection is dynamically updated in the inspector so you can make modifications without first directly clicking on the clip on the timeline so you know which one it's actually performing the changes on.
If you disable the auto select for a track, you'll see it move. It's going to go to the next highest track with auto select enabled. Now don't forget the red buttons in the track header are the auto track selectors and they control track selections and not three -point editing from the source.
Oh, and while we're talking about auto selects, those also have the ability to control what you're selecting for your trim. So if you didn't want a specific track selected, maybe you don't want V2 selected, hit the auto select for V2 and it's not selecting in your trimming selection anymore. The data burn -in overlays now enable us to target a specific track for layers of metadata.
choose the source timecode token and in the lower right, you can select the video track to display the source timecode. What this means is when we make visual effects references, we can burn in source timecode and source file name on multiple layers for multi -layer composites. The markers tab of the edit index can actually now kick out the timeline markers to a PDF to send off to someone and it includes all the thumbnails.
In the media pool, when you're in this view, you can actually batch select markers now to quickly delete them. Those direct orange timeline clip selections, they're cleared as soon as you mark an endpoint now. So there's no confusion on hierarchy between clip selections and marked ranges.
If you option drag clips, you know, to make a copy, those transitions are now kept intact. And that compare timelines window, it was completely overhauled and updated. What you do is you have a timeline open, you right click a previous timeline that's not currently open, and you choose compare with current timeline.
So current timeline is your main timeline. It's the orange one down below. And we have this slick and obvious new badge icon that lives on the new clip.
So you can see the differences. You'll even see there's a dropdown menu that's in the upper left. That lets you swap to a different blue source timeline that you can compare against down to the lower orange working timeline.
This makes reconciling changes as easy as right clicking if you want to accept the change and take that down to your orange working timeline. If you're a blade edit kind of person and you work with selected clips, well, in the user preference now under editing, there's a new checkbox to blade select clips after the playhead.
Just save the preference, blade it, and the next clip is already automatically selected for you. Fusion in 21 .1 has some great new quality of life updates too. The point tracker has new buttons to delete bad track data.
Basically, it allows you to trim or remove the tracking data from the playhead to the end or the playhead to the start or just all of it. Basically, you don't have to always open to the spline editor to remove those bad keyframes anymore. Also, the point tracker now allows you to change the reference frame after it's tracked.
This is under the operations tab, match move settings, and down to reference time. This can be set to any custom time. Even after the track is performed, it's really helpful if you want to reuse the same tracker on different clean plates or stabilize frames.
The camera tracker can now use supervised user tracks like from the point tracker to contribute to the solve. This is right underneath the gutter size on the track tab. You'll find the text to Drop tracker tool here to import tracks.
That's what you're looking for. Just drag the tool right on top of it. Since the point tracker can be manually manipulated, I've taught about that.
It basically means that you can get trackers even on objects that the regular camera tracker would have probably discarded as not being reliable points. Also, It means you could use that exact location to place an object with the point cloud export and potentially take advantage of the fact that, well, the point tracker uses AI to follow objects and not just contrast.
The lens distort node now has a user like draw on sort of mode to correct for lens distortion. So to use it, change the model to one of the fusion methods, open the calibration tab, and you'll see there's a new calibrate type for lines. add lines, and you just click on the screen for lines that should be straight, and you start calibration.
The great thing about removing lens distortion with this node in particular is the fact that, well, it's reversible. And it just makes for comping with the real -world imperfect lenses that we see all the time that much easier. The Fusion Page macro editor has been updated, so now you can edit multi -template DRFX bundles that, you know, have multiple presets in them, and there's the ability to update with selected tools.
And for you motion graphic artists, there's new Crock -A -Dub tools in there as well. The main photo page updates that I'm probably going to use is the micro color panel is now supported for things like the lift, gamma, and gain wheels, as well as the navigation controls to move between photos in your photo album. And last but certainly not least, let's talk about the official MCP AI integrations with AI agents.
Under the file menu, you'll find a native method to set up AI assistance in the paid studio version of Resolve. Also, this is a new thing in Resolve.
If you want to access scripting from outside of DaVinci Resolve, you need the studio version. Now, I set this up personally with my own Claude account, and after just a few permissions requests, I started driving DaVinci Resolve in a chat window. Now, I had Claude...
closed Adventure Resolve. Then I had it open back up just to quickly sort of test out the connection. I told it sort of vaguely the name of a project to open and it actually guessed it correctly.
Then I asked it to run the automatic subtitles on the timeline. There was no problem there, and then continued to ask Claude to reframe it for vertical 9x16. It even used the AI -based smart reframe that's built right into the machine learning that's built into the software that's on the machine.
After the first pass, the scaling didn't fill the frame, but it was fixed with just a little bit of extra instruction. And then I decided, well, can it make it black and white? I asked, can Claude, can you make this black and white?
That was no problem. And finally, I asked the AI agent to export the video for social media, which it did. And it could actually even open it without me touching the editing software myself.
So what's really going on here and what is an MCP? Well, it stands for Model Context Protocol. And the way that I actually understand it, it's basically, it's a connector.
It's a connection between the software applications published API and an external AI tool. I personally use cloud, but you could use anything. It's basically giving the AI.
all of the API that's in the current version of DaVinci Resolve. So it doesn't have to go learn it from some other resource. Now, the API stuff's been around for a long time.
Those are functions that can be scripted, controlled, automated. And the MCP is what allows for the connection to the latest external agentic AI tools like Clot or Codex. And that includes the ever -growing list of published API tools that the Resolve developers continue to expose for us.
That's growing almost every release. Now, I really do want to know what you think about this down below, but keep it civil. I mean, personally, I'm really happy that Resolve has decided to probably not be a token dealer for generative AI credits.
And instead, they offer us this new MCP server so we can kind of like... roll our own bespoke AI solutions. If you want to use it, great.
