Big Idea
The argument in one line.
Identity change functions as a mechanical process built from priming, chosen self-concept, and physical environmental cues rather than an abstract mindset shift, so deleting old anchors and installing new ones is what actually determines whether a new identity sticks.
Who This Is For
Read if. Skip if.
READ IF YOU ARE…
You want a concrete, repeatable process for changing a habit or self-image instead of another motivational pep talk.
You respond well to having a scientific-sounding label, like priming or identity-based motivation theory, attached to an intuitive idea.
You're going through a breakup, career change, or other transition and want a structured way to mark it as final.
SKIP IF…
You're looking for citations to peer-reviewed studies; the neuroscience terms are asserted on camera, not sourced with a study or paper.
You want tactical business or money advice; this is a personal identity and mindset framework, not a growth strategy.
TL;DR
The full version, fast.
Neuroscientist Emily McDonald breaks reality shifting into five concrete steps instead of a vague mindset pitch. Step one primes the brain by stating an intention out loud, pointing to research where a small physical cue, like holding a warm versus a cold drink, changed how people judged a stranger. Step two has viewers consciously choose a new identity, since identity-based motivation theory ties self-concept to what the brain even lets into conscious awareness out of the roughly 11 million bits it receives each second. Steps three and four are the mechanical core: audit and remove identity anchors, the objects, people, places, and habits that cue the old self, then deliberately install new ones. Step five locks the shift in with one irreversible defining action, like deleting old photos or changing a routine, so the brain registers the change as real.

Emily opens by claiming her framework has already worked for her and her clients, reframing identity change from an 'if' to a 'when.'
00:23 – 00:53
02 · Who's teaching this
Emily introduces herself as a neuroscientist with two degrees and lab research experience, now coaching clients in over 55 countries.
00:53 – 03:23
03 · Step 1: Set the intention
Priming is introduced as the mechanism, illustrated with a study where holding a warm or cold drink changed how people judged a stranger's personality, then the viewer is told to write down the intention that now is the moment.
03:23 – 07:02
04 · Step 2: Rebrand and choose your character
Viewers are told to consciously decide who they want to be next, grounded in identity-based motivation theory and the claim that over 99% of incoming information is filtered by the brain before it reaches conscious awareness.
07:02 – 10:51
05 · Step 3: Delete the old identity
Identity anchors, objects, people, places, habits, and content, are named as cues keeping the old self active, and the viewer is walked through an audit of what to remove.
10:51 – 14:32
06 · Step 4: Bring in the new
After clearing old anchors, the viewer is told to deliberately install new ones: new routines, new places, and new music, since lyrics are framed as repeated affirmations.
14:32 – 16:51
07 · Step 5: Create a defining experience
The framework closes with one irreversible symbolic action, illustrated by deleting an ex's photos and clearing the recently-deleted folder, or changing hair color, to make the shift feel final.
16:51 – 17:59
08 · Recap and masterclass pitch
Emily recaps the five steps as simple but not easy, then pitches a free live masterclass on reprogramming the subconscious mind with neuroscience-backed tools.

Atomic Insights
Lines worth screenshotting.
Over 99% of the roughly 11 million bits of information reaching the brain every second gets filtered out before conscious awareness, leaving room for only 40 to 60 bits.
A cited priming study found people who briefly held an iced drink rated a stranger described in a story as colder, while people who held a hot drink rated the same stranger as warmer.
Identity-based motivation theory holds that self-concept sets the model the brain uses to predict a person's own future thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Different environments, a party versus a classroom versus a church, are said to activate different versions of the same person's identity automatically.
Identity anchors, objects, clothes, people, and even specific creators' content, work as cues that pull a person's brain back toward an old identity.
Music is described as tied closely to the brain's limbic system, so lyrics sung along to repeatedly function as unintentional affirmations.
Deleting old photos after a breakup is framed as effective specifically because clearing the recently-deleted folder removes the option to reverse the decision.
The five-step framework runs: set the intention, choose a new identity, delete old identity anchors, install new ones, then create one irreversible defining experience.
Changing hair color repeatedly is framed as a personal, repeatable defining experience rather than a one-time life event.
The video's core claim is that identity, not willpower or motivation alone, determines what a person's brain even lets into conscious awareness.
Takeaway
Five steps decide whether an identity shift sticks
THE UNDERLYING SCIENCE
A stated intention, a chosen identity, and physical cues you can see and touch decide what your brain filters into awareness, so removing old cues and installing new ones is the fastest lever for change.
03Step 1: Set the intention
Priming is happening whether you direct it or not, so deciding on purpose what your brain locks onto beats leaving it to whatever your environment throws at you.
Writing down or speaking a stated intention out loud gives your brain's filtering system a target to search for evidence of, rather than leaving that filter running on autopilot.
A single small physical sensation, like holding a warm or cold drink, can shift how someone judges an unrelated person, which is a useful caution against trusting a first impression as pure fact.
04Step 2: Rebrand and choose your character
Self-concept, not just goals, sets the model your brain uses to predict your own thoughts, emotions, and behavior, so changing identity changes more than changing a to-do list.
Consciously registering only 40 to 60 bits of information per second out of roughly 11 million means whichever identity you've claimed decides most of what you even notice.
Deciding who you want to be is different from picking a goal or a possession; it's choosing the lens your brain filters reality through before you take any action.
05Step 3: Delete the old identity
Identity anchors, objects, people, places, and even specific content, work as cues that automatically pull your brain back into an old version of you.
Different environments already activate different versions of a person automatically, which is why removing the wrong-context cues matters more than willpower alone.
Treating this step as an audit, habits, relationships, environments, and clothing checked one category at a time, turns a vague 'be your best self' goal into a concrete checklist.
06Step 4: Bring in the new
A new identity needs its own cues installed on purpose, a different routine, a new commute, a changed playlist, because anchors work in both directions.
Because music is tied to the brain's limbic system, the lyrics someone repeats on loop function as unintentional affirmations, worth auditing the same way as any other input.
07Step 5: Create a defining experience
A single symbolic, irreversible action, deleting old photos, signing up for something new, changing your hair, marks a before-and-after line in memory more effectively than a private decision alone.
The example of deleting an ex's photos and then clearing the recently-deleted folder works specifically because it removes the option to reverse the decision.
What makes a defining experience work is that the action can't be quietly undone, not its size or cost.
Glossary
Terms worth knowing.
Priming
A psychological effect where an earlier, often unrelated stimulus, like holding a warm or cold drink, unconsciously shapes how a person interprets a later, separate situation.
Identity anchors
Objects, people, places, habits, or media that cue the brain to activate a specific version of a person's identity, whether or not that person wants to keep activating it.
Identity-based motivation theory
A psychology framework holding that a person's self-concept determines the model their brain uses to predict their own future thoughts, emotions, and behavior.
Defining experience
A deliberate, often irreversible action, like deleting old photos or changing a routine, used to mark a before-and-after line in memory so a change feels final rather than tentative.

This is the ultimate neuroscience -backed reality shifting framework. When you use this framework, it's not going to be an if it happens for you, it'll be a when. I have personally used this framework to completely change my life and build the life of my dreams.
I have had clients that use this framework see shifts in their reality in just one moment. week. In this video, I'm going to break down the five neuroscience -backed steps to do this, and by the end, you are going to be operating from an entirely different frequency.
So let's get straight into it. But first, if you're new here, hi, I'm Emily. I'm a neuroscientist by training.
I've got two degrees in neuroscience as well as many years of research experience in the lab. I am now an author, speaker, and coach to people in over 55 countries. all over the world, and I'm here to help you rewire your brain, level up, and live your best life.
So let's dive straight into step one. Step one is really all about just setting the intention that now is the time. Now is the moment.
This is the video that will be the spark for you, that will be the catalyst for you to completely changing your life, starting your new era, leveling up and being the ship. Intention is so, so, so important. If you've never heard of priming, it is a topic in...
psychology and we study it in neuroscience as well. There is actually a really cool study to paint the picture of how important priming is. And it happened on a college campus.
What they did was they had a random person go up to students on a college campus and say, hey, can you hold my drink? And it was either a hot drink or a cold drink, an iced beverage. hot or iced.
And the person was like, okay, yeah, sure. And they would like tie their shoe or whatever. And I, okay, yeah, thanks.
And then leave. And then another person that was a part of the study would go up to that same student and be like, hey, I am running some sort of study. Can you read this story and rank the character in the story as either having a warm personality or a cold personality?
Did they come across as like a warm person to you or a cold person to you? And what they found was that when these students held an iced drink before reading the story, they were more likely to rank the person in the story as being cold. When the students held a warm or a hot drink before reading the story, they were more likely to rank this person in the story, the character, as being warm.
warm. They had a warm personality. They were nice.
They were kind. And so this is the power of priming, okay? We are being primed all of the time.
And if you're not doing it on purpose, something random in your environment, something random in your programming is doing it for you. So prime your brain right now. Set the intention.
Write it down. I would honestly even just be taking notes or write it in the comments. Drop it in the comments.
Write down this. is the moment. This is the shift.
This is the beginning of my new era. When you do this, you will have primed your brain, and now your brain will begin to filter your reality for reasons behind why, yes, oh wait, this is my new era. Now watch.
You're going to walk down the street later. You're going to be living your day -to -day life. Something's going to be happening.
Whoa, that must be a sign that this is a new era for me. Watch. That is the power of priming.
So set the intention. Step two, it is all about rebranding yourself and choosing your character. Who do you want to be in this next era?
Who is the version of you who is living this new era in your reality? What do they believe? How do they dress?
How do they walk? How do they talk? Who do they show up as?
What is their energy like? How do they feel? How do they talk to themselves?
What are their thoughts like in their own head? Understanding who you want to be and consciously choosing who you want to be is so important. In identity -based motivation theory, they have shown that your identity essentially is your destiny.
in this life your identity determines the model that your brain uses to predict your thoughts emotions and behaviors okay so your identity determines the direction in which you are heading in this life and what your brain will even allow into your awareness what your brain will motivate you to do which thoughts your brain will activate inside of your head your identity is so powerful.
It also determines the filter that your brain uses to decide what comes into your conscious awareness and what is filtered out. In case you didn't know, over 99 % of the information that arrives to your brain is filtered out before the image is constructed that you see. Over 99%.
They've actually shown that around 11 million bits per second of information arrive to your brain. every second, but we are only thought to consciously perceive around 40 to 60 bits per second. So this is 10 .9999 million bits of information per second being filtered out.
Think about it this way. I am somebody who loves the brain. I love talking about neuroscience.
And so wherever I go, my brain is filtering my reality through the lens of who I am. If I was at a fair and there were two booths and one was a brain booth, people talking about the brain, and another one was some random sport that I don't care about at all, which one is my brain going to motivate me to move toward? The brain one, because that's the one that aligns with my interest in who I am.
So take a moment, consciously decide. Who are you in this next era? Like you get to decide who you want to be.
Your past does not determine who you are. You get to determine who you are. You get to choose that.
And I love this practice, this activity of sitting down and be like, who do I want to be? Like, who is this version of me? And there's a fun hack that I like to use where I will visualize myself living.
my best life, visualizing myself, the version of me who has everything I could ever want. And then that is who I focus on trying to become. And it's not about, again, the material things.
It's not about the physical goals. It's not about the things that you have. It's about who you are in that reality.
Because who you are determines what you attract. It determines, again, your behavior, your thoughts, your energy. and so much more.
And so getting clear on who it is that you want to become, getting clear and choosing your character, who do you want to be in this next era, that is a game changer when you get clear on it and then when you also decide to take action as them. when you embody them. And that is what the next few steps in this framework are all about.
Step three is deleting the old version of you. It is clearing out the old so that you can make room for the new. So something that most people don't realize is that our environment is full of things called identity anchors.
objects, clothes, people, digital environments, like certain people's content. And what these identity anchors do is they act as cues to your brain to activate a certain identity within you. So they've actually shown in studies that different environments, different people, different places, different behaviors, they actually activate different versions of who you are.
When you are at a party you are going to act in ways that you probably wouldn't act when you are let's say going to church or in the classroom at school, right?
Your brain activates different versions of you depending on the context, depending on what surrounds you. This is really, really important to understand when you are thinking about shifting your reality, shifting timelines, quantum leaping into the light that you want to live. If you are still surrounded by cues that remind your brain of who you used to be, it is going to be so much more difficult.
to step into this new version of you because you have all of these identity anchors that are literally pulling you back to the old reality. I like to think of this step as doing a form of spring cleaning. Something that I always say is you have to clean out the closet before you can make room for new clothes.
I think about this in terms of beliefs when we are investigating our limiting beliefs, when we are looking at habits as well. So you just got clear on who it is that you want to become. Ask yourself, are there bad habits that you have right now that that version of you that has it all doesn't have?
Are there certain people that you keep in your life right now that the highest version of you does not keep around or would establish better boundaries? Are there certain environments or places that you go to now that the best version of you, they don't hang out at places like that? And maybe it could literally even be as simple as clothing.
Are there certain clothes, are there certain outfits that... They just remind you of who you used to be. And maybe it's time to ask a friend if they want them or donate them.
But it's really, really important to get clear on what in your environment is anchoring you to your past. Odds are, if you get super honest with yourself right now, there are probably things that you do. behaviors that you have habits that you have thought patterns beliefs maybe even it's energy that you feel that you reinforce now that that version of you the character that you chose they don't think that way and so getting clear on what that is getting honest with yourself and then doing the work or making the choice that you're just not going to think those thoughts anymore and when those thoughts pop up you say to yourself oh no This new version of me, this version of me in my new era, they don't think that.
That's not who I am anymore. And so when these things start to pop up, when behaviors or old bad habits creep in, you can literally respond to them by saying, that's not who we are anymore. That's the old era.
That's the old self. That's not me today. You will be so surprised by how fast your life can shift, your reality can shift, when you cut the thing out that is anchoring you to your old self.
It could be a person. But it could also be as simple as saying no to something that doesn't align with where you are going. Now, step four just makes sense.
After you've cleaned out the closet, you can make room for new clothes. So step four is to bring in the new. Maybe there's a habit that your new character has that you don't have.
Or maybe there's a certain way that they dress. Or there is a certain way that they feel. Or there's a belief that this new character has that you don't quite have yet.
How is the time to wire it in? The science here is really just to focus on implementing new cues to anchor you to the new identity, the new character that you want to be. Remember, identity anchors exist in your environment everywhere.
They exist in your reality everywhere. So if you can decide, all right, what are my new? identity cues?
What are the things that I'm going to implement that I'm going to bring in that show my brain, hey, yeah, we are a new version of ourselves. Like I am a new character. This is a new game.
We have shifted to a new timeline. It can be something as simple as this version of me. She goes to this specific coffee shop or taking even a new route to work, like driving a new way, like quite literally things as simple as that.
Spark. your brain to wake up. This is where establishing a new routine that can really help you to wire in the new identity that you're trying to become will be so important.
It may be a morning routine. Maybe this new version of you, they wake up and they journal and they do the 3Ms. I have a morning routine video if you want to go watch that.
Definitely go check that one out. But maybe they do the 3Ms, movement, mindfulness, and mindset. Maybe they do a new type of workout or a new type of movement.
every single day. Maybe they listen to different music. Okay.
Music is also an identity anchor. Music and sound is actually closely tied to the limbic system in the brain and can activate emotion on a very deep level. And so the music that you listen to can be really profound for shifting that.
Maybe there's old music that you want to cut out. You're like, oh, this doesn't really align with where I'm wanting to go. I remember when I was first.
kind of on starting this journey and wanting to shift my reality. We program my brain, regulate my nervous system. I got really specific about the music that I listened to because I recognized that it plays such an important role in the way that we feel in our energy, but also in neuroplasticity, like the lyrics that we are singing along to.
Those are affirmations that we are affirming. And so I used to be like really, really, really strict about it. Now, if I am listening to music and there's a song and there's a certain line that I don't resonate with, I will literally say.
I don't claim that. But even still, I am very particular about the music I listen to, about the shows I watch, the content that I consume. These are all so important.
What you do every single day, what you expose your brain to, what you consume, you become. And so recognize that neuroplasticity, shifting your identity, it can happen quickly with... changes that you can choose to just drop certain things and it'll happen fast.
But also it happens over time through the routines that you implement. So choose a new routine, choose, implement something new and then create a routine that allows you to incorporate more of these new identity anchors into your life so that your brain actually has more proof and you continue to just see proof and build belief in the new reality that you are shifting into.
The last step, step five, is to create a defining experience. Take some sort of action right now that will shift you, that will mark to your brain, hey, we are serious and we are doing this thing. An example that I have that is very, very specific to kind of like reality shifting is going through...
breakups. I have a very specific neuroscience backed breakup plan. And one of the steps in that plan is actually to remove the cues that spark all of these old memories.
And the way that I do that is through deleting the photos. Okay, like you go through your photo album, and you delete all of the photos, all the happy photos of you and your ex that are just going to cue your brain to missing them. And also over romanticizing the past because our brains tend to do that after relationships.
This is a great example. Maybe you want to go and take one action. Maybe it's clearing out some photos that remind you of who you used to be that you don't want to be anymore.
And a lot of you might be resistant to that. You're like, no, I don't want it. You have to choose to let it go.
It has to be a defining experience. Do something that makes your decision to become this new version of you irreversible. Like you can't go back.
After you do this, like it is literally impossible to go back after you take this step. And I love the deleting the photos idea and example because you can't get them back. All right.
And you got to clear out. You got to clear the recently deleted folder too. It can be big or it can be small.
You can travel somewhere. You can sign up for a class. I know I have a lot of clients that I coach that like to sign up for new classes.
I mean, another example could be changing your hair. I personally have changed my hair color many times in my life, many, many times. And every single time it is an identity shift.
It is shifting into a new character. You could host a ceremony to lay to rest the old version of you, okay? These are just a few examples of defining experiences that really mark to your brain, okay, this is for real and things are really different now.
Your new era needs its first memory. So create that first memory, take the action, and allow that action to build momentum. Do not sleep.
On this framework, I know it seems very simple, but honestly, that's life. Like it is simple. It might not be easy, but it's simple.
Remove some things from your life that remind you of your old self that anchor you to your old reality. Bring a few things in that anchor you to a new self, a new reality that anchor you and cue you to your new character. And then take action toward doing that.
Create a defining experience that tells your brain there is no going. And if you are interested in diving deeper into the neuroscience of manifestation and how to actually reprogram your subconscious mind with neuroscience -backed tools, understanding what the subconscious even is from the neuroscience perspective, I am hosting a completely free masterclass to teach you step by step how to reprogram your subconscious mind, use neuroscience to manifest your dream life, and so much more.
more i am going to leave the link in the description so that you can sign up to save your spot and i will see you there it's a completely live class too we always hang out and we do a q a at the end it's really fun I'm also going on tour very soon. And so if you are wanting to come see me live on tour, talk all about the neuroscience of manifestation and so much more, then definitely RSVP at the link in the description as well, because we are actually using the responses to decide which cities to come to on tour.
So definitely RSVP using that link in the description. That is all I have for you. I am sending you so much love.
Please do not sleep on this framework, okay? know it seems simple, but honestly, that's life. It's simple.
It might not be easy, but it is simple. The keys are simple. All right.
So implement these changes and please, please, please, please let me know how it goes. And I will see you in the next video. Bye everyone.
