Big Idea

The argument in one line.

A test ad is only ready to scale once it's hitting your cost-per-result KPI AND has burned through at least 10% of its ad set's total budget, and scaling itself means raising budget about 20% every couple of days while carrying the original post's social proof into a new campaign.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • You run paid Facebook or Instagram ads with an existing low-ticket front-end offer and want a repeatable rule for which test ads deserve real budget.
  • You already have a live ABO test campaign but don't have a clear threshold for when an ad is a confirmed winner versus just an early lucky result.
  • You want to see, click by click, how to build a CBO scale campaign that carries over an ad's existing social proof instead of starting from zero engagement.
SKIP IF…
  • You haven't launched any test ads yet - this assumes an existing ABO campaign with real spend data, not how to set one up from scratch.
  • You're looking for creative or hook-writing advice - this video is entirely about Ads Manager mechanics, not ad copy or video production.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

Laurel Portié walks through her weekly process for turning test ads into scaled ads inside Facebook Ads Manager. She reviews each ad set in her ABO test campaign looking for ads that are hitting her cost-per-result KPI (calculated from backend lifetime value, not guesswork) and have already spent at least 10% of the ad set's total budget, proof the result isn't just early luck. Winners get pulled together into a new CBO 'scale' campaign built as one open ad set targeting her top five countries, seeded with existing-customer and engaged-audience signals. Each winning ad is added using its original Facebook post ID rather than a fresh upload, so it keeps its accumulated likes and comments. From there, budgets get raised roughly 20% every 24 to 48 hours instead of jumped all at once.

01 · Weekly test cadence and reading the ad set

Laurel opens her ABO test campaign and explains her weekly cadence of launching five new creatives per ad set using a Trinity Stack audience.

02:1204:40

02 · The KPI + 10%-spent rule

Two ads hit nearly identical cost-per-purchase numbers, but only the one that's spent close to half its ad set budget counts as proven - she states the 10% rule directly.

04:4007:27

03 · Screening the rest of the test campaigns

She checks three more ad sets, including one with $1,300 spent, applying the same 10%-of-budget threshold to decide which ads earn a spot in the scale campaign.

07:2709:14

04 · Building the scale campaign shell

She creates a new Sales campaign, names it with her convention, and sets it to Campaign Budget Optimization starting at $100 a day, catching Facebook's default budget trying to balloon to $10,000.

09:1410:38

05 · One open ad set, top five countries

The single ad set for all scaled ads is built as broad/open targeting restricted to the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, seeded with engaged-audience and existing-customer signals.

10:3812:15

06 · Adding winners by post ID

Each winning ad gets added by pasting its original post ID and choosing 'use existing post,' preserving likes and comments instead of starting a new ad from zero.

12:1514:12

07 · Duplicating and QA-ing the rest

She duplicates the ad four more times, swaps in each remaining winner's post ID, and checks that Facebook hasn't auto-enabled site optimization or browser add-ons she doesn't want.

14:1214:56

08 · Publish

The fifth and final winning ad goes in and she publishes the scale campaign, closing the loop from test-campaign data to a live scale campaign.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • A test ad only proves it can scale once it has burned at least 10% of the ad set's total budget, not just hit your cost-per-result target.
  • Two ads can both hit an $11-12 cost per purchase, but only the one that has spent 10%+ of the ad set budget has enough signal to scale.
  • A $7 front-end offer can justify paying up to $100 per purchase when the backend lifetime value is $212, because you can spend roughly 40% of LTV to acquire a customer.
  • Winners get scaled by raising the ad set budget about 20% every 24 to 48 hours, not by making one big jump.
  • When migrating a winning ad into a scale campaign, copy over the underlying Facebook post ID so it keeps its existing likes, comments, and social proof instead of starting at zero.
  • A scale campaign is built as a single open ad set holding every proven winner, using CBO so the algorithm reallocates spend across creatives automatically.
  • Facebook's campaign wizard can default a new budget field to a much bigger number than intended, so double-check the field before publishing a scale campaign.
  • Feeding a scale campaign existing-customer and engaged-audience signals gives Facebook's algorithm a head start even on otherwise 'open' targeting.
  • Running five new test creatives into an ad set every single week keeps a testing pipeline alive even when older ads are still profitable, so there's no scramble if Facebook's algorithm shifts.
  • An ad that's barely spent but already converting at KPI is treated as early signal, not a confirmed winner - it earns more time, not an immediate scale.
Takeaway

The two numbers that prove an ad can scale

SCALING SIGNAL

An ad is only provably scalable when it's hitting your real cost-per-result ceiling and has spent enough of the budget to rule out lucky early numbers.

01Weekly test cadence and reading the ad set
  • Launching five new test creatives into an ad set every week keeps a pipeline of contenders live, so you're never fully dependent on ads that could fail overnight.
  • Even ads that have run profitably for years can suddenly stop working, so continuous testing is insurance, not just growth-seeking.
02The KPI + 10%-spent rule
  • Calculate your real cost-per-acquisition ceiling from backend lifetime value, not from what feels affordable: a $212 LTV customer can justify paying up to roughly $100 per purchase.
  • Hitting your target cost per result is necessary but not sufficient - two ads can post nearly identical costs per purchase and still have completely different scale-readiness.
  • An ad needs to have spent at least 10% of its ad set's total budget before its performance numbers are trustworthy enough to act on.
03Screening the rest of the test campaigns
  • Apply the same 10%-of-budget threshold across every ad set you own, not just the newest one - a $1,300 ad set needs $130 in spend on a single ad before that ad counts as proven.
  • An ad converting well on very little spend isn't rejected, it's given more time before a scale decision is made either way.
04Building the scale campaign shell
  • A dedicated scale campaign, built separately from the test campaign, keeps proven winners from getting diluted by the ongoing churn of new creative tests.
  • A consistent internal naming convention (initials plus objective, budget type, and audience) makes it possible to tell what a campaign does without opening it.
  • Facebook's campaign setup UI can quietly default a budget field to a far higher number than intended - always verify the actual daily budget before publishing.
05One open ad set, top five countries
  • Feed a scale campaign your engaged-audience and existing-customer signals even when the targeting itself is 'open' - it gives the algorithm real data to anchor on instead of starting cold.
06Adding winners by post ID
  • Keep every proven ad in a single ad set under Campaign Budget Optimization so the algorithm reallocates spend across winners automatically instead of manually splitting budget.
  • Limit broad or open targeting to your actual buying markets rather than leaving it fully worldwide.
07Duplicating and QA-ing the rest
  • When moving a winning ad into a new campaign, use the original Facebook post ID instead of re-uploading the creative, so its accumulated likes and comments move with it.
  • Duplicating one working ad structure for each remaining winner is faster and more consistent than rebuilding a new ad from scratch every time.
  • Double-check every duplicated ad for settings Facebook auto-enables, like site optimization or browser add-on buttons, that you didn't explicitly choose.
08Publish
  • Treat picking winners as a recurring weekly task, not a one-time event - the same test ad sets get re-screened for new winners every week.
Glossary

Terms worth knowing.

ABO
Ad Set Budget Optimization - a campaign structure where budget is set at the ad set level instead of the campaign level, used here for running independent tests.
CBO
Campaign Budget Optimization - Facebook automatically distributes one campaign-level budget across its ad sets or ads, used here for the scale campaign.
Trinity Stack
Laurel's own audience-building method combining interest targeting, lookalikes, and open targeting into one stacked audience for cold traffic.
Learning limit
A Facebook delivery status meaning an ad set hasn't generated enough conversions yet for the algorithm to exit its learning phase and optimize delivery reliably.
Post ID
The unique identifier of an existing Facebook post, used to attach a new ad to a post that already has organic likes and comments instead of creating a fresh post with zero engagement.
LTV (Lifetime Value)
The total revenue expected from one customer over their entire relationship with a business, used here to set how much can be spent to acquire that customer.

In this video, I'm going to show you what I'm looking for whenever I am looking for ads to scale. And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to click here into my starting five ABO campaign. Remember, our test campaign is the budget is set at the ad set level.
And so if I click here, you're going to see that I have starting five, the original. Then I've got pack two. This should be safe.
Pack number three just didn't change it. And so every single week we should be launching five new creatives inside our ad set. Now you could use interest targeting.
I like to use a Trinity stack. You could use lookalikes or you could use open. I recommend if you don't have a lot of pixel data, giving Facebook some direction.
And in another video, I show you what my Trinity stack audience looks like. I'm not going to really go into it because this video is all about what am I looking for whenever I want to scale? Okay.
So let's actually go. to, uh, let's actually go to this one right here. So I've spent $423 on this so far.
So you could see fairly new, uh, testing campaign. I haven't had to test new ads in years and it's always better to start testing before your other ads start failing. And so even though my ads have been running for years, I'm like, you know what?
I need to get some in for just in case. Facebook decides my ads that have been working for years no longer work. And so even if your other ads are working, you should still be doing this.
And so I'm going to go into pack number two. You can see here I've spent a total of $423.
And what I am looking for obviously are purchases, right? So my LTV for members in the $7 program is about $212 lifetime value, right? And typically you should be able to spend 40 % in order to acquire that customer.
So you could see I am well within what my cost per purchase should be. Like I could pay up to like a hundred bucks to acquire a $7 customer because of my backend. Now you could see I'm well.
within KPI. So what's important is that you actually know what your KPIs, what does your cost per purchase or lead need to actually be. Okay.
So you can see here, this one's getting purchases for $11 and 75 cents. You could see this one, $12 and 37 cents. So both good.
But both very different. One ad is scalable and one is not yet. And I'm going to show you the difference of what I'm looking for.
Okay. So you can see this one, the one that says kiss my row as this one has spent $199, which is almost half of what the entire ad set budget. Okay.
What I'm looking for is KPI getting purchases or leads at KPI, but that the ad set is spending more than 10 % of its budget on that one ad. okay so this one it's almost spending 50 so i know this one will be able to scale so what i'm going to do is i'm going to hit preview and i'm going to go to facebook post with comments and what i want is this post id okay because as you can see right here if i go to my ad you can see all of the social proof and when i create the scale campaign i want to ensure that all of that social proof actually comes with it, okay?
So that's the first one that I know that I will be able to scale. Why is this one not scalable? Well, this one has only spent $12 .37, which is well below 10 % of the total ad set budget, okay?
So this one, even though it's getting purchases, It's probably not going to scale. It might, but I'm going to give this ad set some longer time because I'm not going to shut this ad set off just because I'm picking some winners.
I'm going to continue to add 20 % budget every single day. That's how we scale. And so basically I just raised it to $70.
I'm going to raise it another 20 % in the next 48 hours. Um, let's see, will this one scale? Let's see.
This one has spent $90, which is more than So I'm going to say preview and I'm going to go ahead and I am going to grab this one. And again, I'm looking for this post ID and I'll show you guys exactly what I'm looking for here in just a minute.
Let's see, what else do we have? Let's see this one, $36 per purchase. I'm still okay with it.
So I will go ahead and I will grab that one too. I'm going to hit preview.
Great. So that is about everything that I am willing to pull out of this campaign. So we've got three ads out of that one.
So let's see what we're going to do is I'm going to go back to the ad set and let's go take a look at some of the other ones. This one's the latest one that I just launched. You can see it hasn't spent that much budget yet, but we'll take a look and see if there's anything that we've got.
Ooh, $3 .99 and $2 .15. Still early, but you can see this has spent $28. So these are pretty close, but I'm going to give this a little bit more time.
But this is definitely headed in the right direction. And let's go to the one that has been running the longest. It has spent about $1 ,300.
And it looks like we have quite a bit of winners here as well. So let's say $1 ,300. So it needs to have spent at least $130.
So you can see this one right here has only spent $100. So it hasn't spent 10 % of the total ad set budget. So this one, I'm not sure.
It's not giving me signal that it's scalable. This one. is not either um but all of the other ones um appear to be spending um more of the ad set budget this one right here 46 more than happy with that um but you can see i've got two of them that are considerably lower this billboard um accident attorney one uh 233 um barely um hits our 10 but It does show signs of scale, so I'm going to go ahead.
I'm going to hit preview, and I'm going to do that.
And then I am going to go to this one, definitely scalable, and I like the price. So we just took, let's see, one, two, three, four, five. So we just grabbed five ads.
Again, I want to grab this post ID. So that this ad comes along with all of the social proof, right? So we definitely, that's what I'm always looking for is I want to bring over the social proof, okay?
So how do we create our scale campaign? Well, it's actually pretty easy. So I'm going to go here at the campaign level and I'm going to hit create and I am going to hit a sales campaign.
I'm running a sales campaign. If you're running a lead gen campaign, obviously you would hit leads and we're going to hit continue.
Great. Okay. Fun, fun, fun.
Okay. So I'm going to name this LP.
I always put my initials even on my own stuff. And I am going to do scale CBO $7 winners. And I am going to leave it on campaign budget.
and i'm going to start this budget at a hundred dollars a day because this is a scale campaign and i kind of read what facebook tells me but i always exit out um because look it wants to do daily budget no we don't want a daily budget of we want a hundred dollars not ten thousand you gotta watch that sometimes facebook will We'll creep up and do stuff.
So right here, it's giving you an opportunity to utilize any of your pixeled audiences. Now, sometimes people get confused because they see this play. This is eBoov software.
So it's all pixel data. You can't actually use your video view data here. You can only use your pixel data or your email list.
And then I've got my existing customers who bought my $7 program. So basically, when you're scaling, you definitely want to... add in your engaged audience or your existing customers here.
And then that is, let's see, that is all we're going to do here. So I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to hit next.
Now, what I'm going to do here is I'm going to do open. Now I will do it to my scale ads. I'm just going to name it scale ads because what we're going to do is we're literally set.
Let's see, we got one. two, three, four, five. We've got five ads that we're going to be putting underneath here.
Every single ad that I'm going to add to the scale campaign is going to go under this one ad set. It's going to be open. We want to make sure that we set all of our pixel data.
We've got pixel purchase, standard.
I'm not going to set an end date. I'm not going to utilize my audience. I will, however, use my countries, my top countries, Canada.
I'm going to add a little united kingdom in there i'm going to add australia there we go united states united kingdom canada australia and then typically i'll add new zealand there we go then what I am going to do is I'm just going to let all of the placements, I'm not going to select any placements or anything like that.
I'm just going to hit next.
And now I am just going to, let's see, I'll start going down the list. This is, I'm going to turn your clone into an AI version of me. I'm going to grab this post ID number right here on this ad.
I'm going to come back here.
Clone.
I guess clone me and make sure it's under my stuff. Let me go add preview. And because I'm using an existing ad, I'm just going to say use existing post.
I'm going to uncheck multi -advertiser ads. I am going to enter the post ID here and you're going to see the ad is going to show up here with all of its social proof, right? So that one is done, so I'm going to X that one out, and I'm going to go to the next one.
This is the, let's see, this is the accident attorney one, so I'm just going to go here. I'm going to grab the post ID and go back here.
Oh, and don't get alarmed. If Facebook gives you this, just start the authentication process. This happens if you're managing a lot of clients or whatever.
So I'm going to pause this. recording and i'm going to go and head and take care of that all right so now that we got verification going we've got our first add up i'm just going to duplicate and what i'm going to do because we have five i'm going to hit number of copies four and all i'm gonna do is i'm gonna go to this next one and again i'm gonna grab this number right here and here and i know that this one is the Attorney ad.
So I'm just going to go and I'm going to here.
Boom. I'm going to go X that out because I've already done that one. I'm going to go here.
And this one is the let's see.
This one's just I made just kind of like a little pattern interrupt of just some. Some video. I'm going to grab the, again, this post ID.
It's a little tedious work, but it's pretty fairly easy. I'm going to go here.
I do not want to optimize this. Sometimes Facebook will try to throw in all of that. I need to make sure on the other ads too that it didn't do that.
I don't want that.
And then I'll just do wildfire. Now let me go check to make sure that Facebook wasn't adding on any of those things. Yeah, see, I don't want to optimize my website.
I don't want browser add -ons. Do not want that. Do not want that.
So I'm going to continue to go down. Let's see, we've already done this one. Got two more to go.
Again, I'm going to grab this.
Go to.
Teaching competitors.
And then make sure it's not doing that. Adding the shit. Boom.
One more. The kiss my row as. Yeah.
That's my favorite one. Have you guys heard that one where I'm rapping? It's pretty cool.
So I'm gonna hit copy here. And then this one is kiss my real ass.
Yep, and that's what, this is the work that I'm gonna do every single week. I'm gonna go into those other ad sets. I'm gonna see is which ads are hitting KPI and which ones are spending more than 10 % of the total ad set budget.
And I'm going to continue. to add them underneath this open ad set right here. And I'm just going to go ahead and I'm going to preview to publish and I'm done.
The Hook

The bait, then the rug-pull.

Laurel opens by naming the exact filter she runs every ad set through before she'll trust a test ad with real budget: it has to be hitting KPI, and it has to have already spent real money proving it.
