Big Idea

The argument in one line.

A personal brand that sells is built on nutritious, specific content and real documented life, not on cheap views, because the audience you attract mirrors the content you feed it.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • A coach, consultant or service provider posting short-form content who gets views but few buyers and wants to know why.
  • A creator who keeps running out of ideas and wants a repeatable way to mine topics from conversations they already have.
  • A business owner who has written off cold followers as unqualified and wants a model for warming them up over time.
SKIP IF…
  • You want a technical tutorial on editing, hooks or algorithms; this is strategy and mindset, delivered as a talking-head list.
  • You run a pure entertainment channel and have no offer to sell.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

Personal brand growth comes down to six moves. Swap candy content (listicles, rankings, clones) for useful, specific videos so you attract higher quality followers. Document a goal in real time so you always have media to capture. Replicate the setting where you shine and film it. Record every conversation and mine it for ideas. Treat cold leads as qualified but not warm, and warm them with positioning, competence and credibility. Finally, give away what to do for free and sell how to do it, through customization, personalization and accountability.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • Candy content spikes views like a sugar rush, then crashes, and leaves you with an audience that never needed a smart mind to consume you.
  • Switch your success metric on social media from views to service: is the video useful to a defined group of people?
  • To get followers you have to be someone worth following, which means setting goals and talking about the work of reaching them daily.
  • Media is a captured moment of your life, so doing more with your life gives you more media to capture.
  • A client who ran a daily weight-loss challenge for a year saw her baseline climb to 200,000 to 500,000 views on average videos.
  • Capturing content means a camera records you being yourself; creating content implies you are fabricating something.
  • Find the container where you make people's jaw drop, track its variables, replicate it, and have someone film you in it.
  • The best content ideas are things you already said, so record every call and pull statements from the transcripts.
  • Condense an idea into a punchy statement, explain why you believe it, add a story, then give a takeaway.
  • A lead's temperature and a lead's qualification are two separate variables; cold does not mean unqualified.
  • Only about 5 to 10 percent of a market is ready to buy now, so 90 to 95 percent are future buyers you can only reach with content.
  • To warm people up fast, work on three things: positioning, competence and credibility.
  • Showing yourself solving the problem you claim to solve beats a boring talking head.
  • Give away the what, hold back some of the how, and position your offer as the thing that fills the gaps.
Takeaway

Build an audience of buyers, not scrollers.

WHAT TO LEARN

The audience you get mirrors the content you feed it, so useful, specific, real-life content builds the fans who eventually buy.

  • Easy formats like listicles and rankings bring inflated views and low-quality followers, so use them sparingly and judge content by how useful it is to a target group.
  • Setting a public goal and documenting it daily gives you a steady supply of real media and gives people a reason to follow you.
  • Find the setting where you feel like a genius, such as events, trainings or sales calls, replicate it, and film it to close the gap between real you and online you.
  • Record every conversation with a note taker, then pull statements you already said and turn them into hook, reason, story and takeaway videos.
  • Do not treat a cold lead as unqualified. Only 5 to 10 percent are ready to buy, so keep warming the rest with problem-focused content, demonstrations of skill and proof.
  • Tell people what to do for free, leave some implementation out, and sell the how through customization, personalization and accountability.
Glossary

Terms worth knowing.

Candy content
Highly palatable formats like listicles, rankings and clone videos that earn easy views but attract low-commitment followers.
Core, casual and new audience
Three rings around the creator. Core fans trust you most and buy most, casual viewers know you, and new viewers haven't heard of you yet.
Lead temperature
How warm a prospect is toward buying from you now, which is separate from whether they fit your offer at all.
TAM
Total addressable market: everyone who could plausibly buy what you sell, whether or not they are ready today.
Capturing vs creating
Filming yourself as you naturally are, rather than fabricating content that wasn't part of your real life.

Every month I generate a million followers for the creators I work with and we post roughly 15 ,000 pieces of content a month. And if I wanted to build a personal brand that people obsess over, I would do these six things immediately. Starting with thing number one, I would stop making candy content.
I want you to imagine that the content that you create is food. There is food that is harder to eat, that probably doesn't taste as good, but it's high in nutritional value. And then there's food that tastes really good, super palatable, but it has no nutritional value.
Content that represents food that's harder to eat, doesn't taste as good, but it has a lot of nutrients is maybe content that's a little bit more boring. Maybe content that is about topics that only a specific type of people would find valuable. That's like your proteins, your chicken breast, your rice, your broccoli, right?
You then have the more dopaminergic candy content. There are so many different types of videos that fall into this category. It's like listicle videos where you're just like pointing at this, this, or this.
Ranking videos fall in that category. Clone videos fall into that category. Candy will give you a spike in blood sugar, so it will give you like an energy rush.
I want you to imagine that that energy spike is like views, like it's inflated. It's like, oh, we're getting views. This is great.
We're going somewhere. But then there is a crash after that. And that crash is that you are not, bring in a high quality person i don't know about you but i would rather have an audience of people that are core die hard fans for me and the information that i share rather than having a group of people that follow me just because i create content that's convenient for them to consume i'm not saying that these formats of content are inherently bad but i am saying that if your entire brand is built upon this candy content that is very cheap and it doesn't require a wiser higher quality mind to consume then expect to attract low quality people the exercise is to a you need to acknowledge that you have a problem if this applies to you you might be a view whore so you need to change your measurement for success on social media from views to that of service are you creating videos that are super useful to a target group of people if you want to do them because they get your views do a smaller fraction of them and then create longer form videos that might be a little bit more on the boring side that are specific to solving a problem for your customers number two go on a journey and take with you let's say you want to increase the amount of followers you have
Okay, so let's pause thinking about this in social media and think about how would you get followers in real life? Let's say I'm going to embark on a journey. I'm going to walk from the city I live in, Kelowna, to Vancouver.
Okay, so following me would mean I am leading the way and people are coming with me behind me. So if you wanted to get more followers. in real life, I think you need to A, be someone worth following means you need to become a leader.
That applies on social media as well. You need to go embark on a journey, meaning go like set some goals for yourself and then talk about what you're doing to achieve your goals on a daily basis. Let's observe what an online social media personal brand is for a second.
You are creating media with the hope to increase the amount of people that follow and fuck with you. Media is a filmed, captured moment. of your life now that we know that capturing media is dependent on you doing something or living life, then we can assume that if you do more stuff and live more life, you will have more media to capture.
An example of this is one of our clients. Her name's Christine Cardenas. She's now at about 1 .5 million followers.
But when she was at about 400 ,000 followers, we decided to do a daily challenge where she was going to go from, I think it was like 180 pounds to 160 pounds. And so every day she was like day one of no ice cream, no protein, no energy drinks until 160 pounds or a million followers. Every single day for over a year, she followed this challenge.
And I saw her baseline of views go up so much. There was a point where she was getting on average 200 ,000 to half a million views per video, just on like average videos that weren't super, super interesting. And I think that that goes to show the power of deciding that you're going to do something in real time.
and show people how you're doing it the lesson in there build in public be someone who sets goals and achieves them and talk about how you did it which brings me to number three get known for what you are best at i got ai to comb through hundreds of my client and prospect conversations that i've had this year with the goal of figuring out what the most common pain points are that the people that want to work with us a personal brand building firm i wanted to know what problems they were experiencing and one of the most common recurring things that came up were that people feel like there is a gap between who they are the skills that they have and the person that they are in real life and then the person they are on social media i know some brilliant people that are nothing on social media like the version of themselves that i know in real life the way you're going to win is by capturing your lightning in a bottle and then putting that on a manufacturing belt through your content the exercise that i would do to capture your lightning in a bottle is i would look at what environments or containers do you show up
in and make people's jaw drop is it speaking at events is it trainings with your team is it sales calls where did you feel like a genius and then i want you to track all of the variables that existed within that container and then i want you to try to replicate that container and then i want you to have someone film you in that container if you want to build a personal brand that is unique and different from everybody else then you need to take the things that make you unique and capture them on camera and then post them but i want the emphasis to be heavier on capturing content instead of creating content creating content implies that I am fabricating something capturing content implies that I am just being and a camera is recording me as I'm just being number four capture everything you say if you want to grow on social media you want to get let's say views and followers those views and followers are going to come from videos that you post on the internet those videos are going to come from a shoot of some sort
That shoot is going to come from ideas. You are going to get the most and the best ideas from the things that you have already said. The issue is that most people don't know what they have said.
And so every time they go to create content, they're like, well, what should I talk about? If you want to solve the what should I talk about problem with your content, then just capture everything you say and then study what you say and then take out the little statements and then make videos on those. What do you do?
Do you have calls with your team? Do you have client calls? Do you have coaching calls?
Do you have... presentations? Do you have podcasts?
Then I want you to start recording all of the conversations you have. You can use AI. You can use like a Fathom note taker in your Zoom.
You can also on your phone download this little toggle called Granola. Let's say you're having a conversation with someone in real life. I can just hit this little button and then it's going to start recording.
And then it's going to send me a summary of that conversation. Like these are the two easiest ways to just start capturing everything you say. And then either once a week, twice a week.
whatever fucking cadence you want, go through all of those. You can even plug them into an LLM, which is an AI, and pull statements that you have said that are correlated with the topics that you want to talk about in your content. The reason why this is one of the best places you can go to find ideas is because these are things that you have already set.
After you have these ideas, I want you to take the idea, condense it into a short statement that punches. For example, maybe you said on a team call, no, I think we should fire that person, right? How can you condense that?
into a statement that punches for content. Well, why did you think you should fire the person? Oh, because they were on a nap during a time when they should have been working?
Okay, so the point of that video is you should fire employees that sleep during working hours. Seems obvious, but I think it's a great video. Now that you have the statement, which is gonna be your hook, I want you to elaborate on that statement.
Why do you think that? Why do you believe that statement is true? Then give some sort of story or illustration and then give people a takeaway what they should do differently.
You now have endless content ideas that are always being replenished by the conversations that you're having on a daily and weekly basis. Plus, all of these content ideas will be unique because they came from you, not from other people. Number five, and this is for all the business owners watching, just because a lead is cold doesn't mean a lead is unqualified.
The way that I think about it is you have three types of audiences. So think of this as a bullseye. We have you in the center, and then you have your core audience, you have your casual audience, and then you have your new audience outside of that.
Your core audience are the people that trust you the most because they have spent the most time watching your content and they have probably been following you the longest. You then have your casual audience, which are the people that are familiar with who you are, but they're not as bought in as your core audience. And then you have your new audience, which are the people that don't know who you are.
The people that are most likely to become customers are the people in that first rung. the people in your core audience so if you want to make money you need to get as many people into your core audience as possible there are a lot of content creators that i've talked to that think that just because a prospect wasn't ready to buy means that they're not a qualified lead maybe that person was qualified they just hadn't spent enough time with you in your content to become warm or hot enough to become a lead that you could sell we cannot conflate the temperature of a lead with whether that lead is qualified or not they are two separate variables the way i see it is i think there is a very small fraction of the market that is ready to buy i have heard other people say that it's about five to ten percent which means you have about 90 to 95 percent of a market a tam of people a total addressable market of people that exist that might be buyers one day but aren't buyers right now.
The goal, in my opinion, of organic content is to get in front of as many people that are interested in that topic as possible. And then over time, you take them from a state of either unawareness, symptom awareness or problem awareness and tip them aware solution awareness, which is when they become more likely to become customers.
A lot of people don't know they have a problem yet, but I think it's good to capture them because. When you capture a large group of people that are all interested topically in the thing that you are an expert at, the thing that you're best at, after consistently consuming your content for years and building trust with you, when they are ready to become a customer of someone that's going to sell them that thing, they're most likely to buy it from you because you're the guy they've been following for years.
And I've observed this. This isn't a theory. This is something that I personally have gone through and I've seen hundreds of people that have followed the creators we work with.
experience as well this is why you cannot conflate the temperature of a lead so whether they're hot warm or cold with how qualified that lead is because that lead might be qualified but they're just not ready to buy yet which is why you should put as much content in front of them to take them from that state of i don't really know if this is for me to this is for me i need this and i want it and i'm ready to buy if i wanted to warm people up as fast as possible i would worry about three things your positioning your competence and your credibility your positioning is how you position what you do and how relevant that solution is to problems that people experience in real life you need to make sure that you create content that actually solves problems for people or at least it addresses the problems and symptoms that people feel the pains that they have you then need to create content demonstrating your competence so this is your skill set this is what you know flex your brain if you can demonstrate your competence that's even better so like if you can show yourself in action solving the problem that you claim to be able to solve then do that that is much better content than just boring talking head kind of like what i'm doing right now and then thirdly focus on sharing your credibility so this is the proof
that what you say works for people. This looks like case studies, client stories, before and after photos, real life proof verified by other people demonstrating that you know what you're talking about. You're the guy.
I would try to cycle this on your feed daily as many times as possible. Number six, give away the what for free and sell the how. The what is what people need to do.
The how is specifically how they're going to do what you told them to do. Typically what people say. is create content that is so valuable that people can get results without hiring you.
I think that that's a good play, but I also think that there's an extent where you can give away so much value that people get so many results without working with you. that there is no reason for them to work with you because they're getting all of the good stuff for free. So the question is, how do you give away enough value without giving away too much value that people don't end up needing to hire you at all?
The way to do that is to give away the what, you sell the how. So what are all of the things that people need to do? Think of that as like a horizontal list of behaviors that people are going to need to do.
So for example, for me, you need to go do research on topics you can talk about. You then need to ideate those topics. You then need to shoot those topics.
You then need to edit those topics. You then need to post those topics, right? So I'm telling you what to do.
I'm not telling you how to do it. Like I'm not telling you to go open up Instagram and then scroll for 30 seconds and then do this and then do this and then do this. Like I'm not going super, super deep.
The how is all of the deep sets of behavior in a row that people would need to do. to get success in doing that thing now this isn't to say that you should never tell people how to do something i just think it's important to leave out a little bit of the implementation tell people what they need to do And if they don't know how to do that, then you can position your offer as the thing that is going to help them fill in the gaps.
I also think there's power to selling customization, personalization and accountability and positioning your offer as something that does those things so that people don't just see working with you as, OK, I'm getting more information from working with this guy because information is what they get from your content. Do these six things immediately to build a million follower personal brand and check out this video next where I talk about the new rules of personal branding, which cover all of the things that we do with our clients to a million followers a month.
