Big Idea

The argument in one line.

A lead generation system only works when three pieces operate together, marketing assets, traffic sources that spread them, and a capture mechanism that turns attention into contact data, and missing any one of the three breaks the whole engine.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • A coach, consultant, or freelancer who relies on referrals or one-off networking and has no repeatable system for generating leads.
  • A small business owner who has marketing assets or a following but no structured way to capture names, emails, or phone numbers from them.
  • Someone frustrated that everyone around them is chasing the same single channel, like LinkedIn, instead of building a complete system.
SKIP IF…
  • You run paid ads at scale or already have a formal CRM-driven inbound funnel, this framework is a starting-point model, not an advanced playbook.
  • You're looking for specific ad copy, platform tactics, or step-by-step software instructions, the video stays at the conceptual level.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

Most small business owners chase a single lead generation tactic, usually LinkedIn, and burn out because one channel can't carry the whole load. The video lays out a three-part framework called the Fearless Lead Engine: assets (digital or physical marketing materials like books, scorecards, or brochures that educate and build trust), traffic (ways to borrow other people's audiences through speaking gigs, partnerships, and podcast guest appearances), and capture (turning that attention into owned contact data through QR codes, landing page forms, and chat widgets). All three have to exist together, remove any one piece and the engine stalls. Capture gets singled out as the most neglected step: business owners build assets and get traffic but never collect names, emails, and phone numbers, so the attention evaporates instead of becoming a managed pipeline. Building a working version of all three typically takes six to twelve months, not an overnight fix.

Where the time goes.

00:00 – 01:46

01 · The current state of small business lead gen

Robin sets up the problem: every market is saturated, business owners are busy delivering client work and forget marketing, and leads are not instant, so he is going to lay out a repeatable three-step model.

01:46 – 05:29

02 · The three-step Fearless Lead Engine

He draws the triangle framework live: assets, traffic, and capture, and explains that all three must be present or the engine does not run, using a car-engine analogy (missing carburetor, fuel injector, or pistons).

05:29 – 08:07

03 · Creating high-value marketing assets

Assets are split into physical (books, card decks, brochures, novelty items) and digital (quizzes, scorecards, calculators). He uses his own books and a client's wellbeing card deck as examples, and stresses assets should educate, build trust, and explain why someone should buy.

08:07 – 10:17

04 · Mastering traffic: speaking, partnerships, and podcasts

Traffic is about borrowing other people's audiences through speaking gigs, partnerships, and podcast guest appearances. A single podcast guest appearance generated 3,000 leads versus four and a half years of social media producing the same 3,000-person list.

10:17 – 19:25

05 · The crucial role of data capture

Capture is framed as the most neglected piece: QR codes into landing page forms, name/email/phone collection, strategic personalized voice-note follow-ups, and website chat widgets. He closes with the six-to-twelve-month realistic build timeline and a story about 6,000 entrepreneurs at a business festival all naming LinkedIn as their only lead strategy.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • A lead generation system needs three components working together: assets, traffic, and capture, missing any one of them means the system does not function at all.
  • A single guest appearance on a well-matched podcast generated 3,000 leads, more than four and a half years of social media posting had produced for the same business.
  • Marketing assets split into two categories: physical (books, brochures, card decks) that arrive as 'lumpy mail' and build trust differently than anything digital, and digital (quizzes, scorecards, calculators) that can now be built in minutes with AI tools.
  • Traffic in this model is specifically about borrowing other people's audiences: speaking engagements, partnerships, and podcast guest appearances, not paid ads or organic posting.
  • The most commonly skipped step is capture: business owners build great assets and generate plenty of traffic but have no system for turning attention into a name, email, and phone number they actually own.
  • A QR code linking to a simple landing page form is presented as the simplest possible capture mechanism, more reliable than trying to manually track every interaction.
  • After someone is captured via a QR code, the recommended follow-up is a short personal voice note referencing exactly what they requested, not a mass SMS or email blast.
  • Building a complete, frictionless lead engine realistically takes six to twelve months of sustained effort, not a quick setup.
  • At a business festival surveying 6,000 entrepreneurs over two days, nearly every person named the same single channel, LinkedIn, as their lead generation strategy, which the speaker frames as a sign the market has gotten lazy about marketing.
  • AI tools like Lovable, Replit, and Base44 have lowered the cost of building digital assets and simple CRM-style capture tools to a fraction of what it used to take, removing the old excuse that building these pieces is too technical or expensive.
Takeaway

A lead system needs all three legs, not just one

WHAT TO LEARN

Marketing assets, borrowed traffic, and data capture only work as a system, missing any single piece means the other two generate nothing you actually own.

  • Treat a lead generation strategy as three required components, not one. Assets without traffic go unseen, traffic without capture gets forgotten, and assets without capture never convert into a pipeline.
  • Physical assets, like a mailed book or a printed deck of cards, still outperform digital-only assets for trust and memorability, don't assume everything has to be a PDF or a web tool.
  • Borrowed audiences compound faster than owned-audience growth. One well-matched podcast guest appearance can outproduce years of regular social media posting.
  • A QR code into a simple landing page form is enough to start capturing leads, the barrier to starting data capture is lower than it feels.
  • When someone opts in, follow up with a short, specific, personal message referencing exactly what they requested, not a generic automated blast, personalization at the point of capture builds trust fast.
  • Expect six to twelve months to get a complete lead engine running smoothly, a system this is being built as a long-term asset, not a campaign with an end date.
  • If your entire lead generation plan is one channel, that is a signal to diversify, not a sign the channel itself is broken.

Hey folks, it's Robin here. Nice to see you all again. Thankfully, I've perked up a little bit since I last saw you in my previous video where I was talking about entrepreneur burnout.
Amazing how a season can shift things. In today's video, I wanted to talk about a hot topic. I wanted to talk about lead generation.
So if you are a coach, a consultant, or a freelancer, or maybe just a small business owner, I'm hearing it on the grapevine, the whispers on the streets, that many people are struggling to generate leads for some reason at the moment. Whereas I would normally talk about product architecture, pricing, sales, I shirked the conversation around marketing because it is so vast compared to when I started my business 22 years ago.
I remember back in the day, I know I don't look old enough to have been in business for 22 years, obviously, but I remember back in the day, you could pretty much get a deck of business cards printed out, head down to your local BNI networking meeting and speak to a few people by the coffee machine and you could win clients.
It was... dead easy back then but now thanks to the advent of fast internet and social media and global marketplace and the ease of which it is to get a business set up these days and registered on Companies House or wherever whichever country you're in it's meant that pretty much every market is saturated and everybody's trying to just trying to get by really just to try and make a decent sort of living as well as have a nice lifestyle and spend time with their family have a bit of freedom but also more importantly to be able to pay the bills.
I see that a lot of business owners are finding it harder and harder to do that in 2026 for a multitude of reasons. I just think there is so much noise out there. So I'm going to work through just a really simple three -step model which I've created which is all around building out your own fearless lead engine for your small business.
Now the first thing I'm going to do is caveat this video and say that One of the things to remember is that leads aren't instant. It's not like a, hey, let's click our fingers and then we've got 100 leads coming in.
It just doesn't really work like that. Not for the typical small business owner who sits in the middle of that bell curve. There are people on the fringes who find it impossible to get leads and people on the other fringe who end up finding it super easy to get leads for their business.
And then there's the vast majority of business owners who sit in the middle who kind of, it it kind of flip -flops around between being moderately okay to oh it's a bit of a struggle again and the other challenge of course is that you're so busy obviously delivering your coaching your consulting your freelancing work to your clients that you forget about marketing altogether and so then you finish a project get the eventually get the paycheck in from that you know your invoice paid and then you're like oh crap should probably do some marketing again now and so you've got to build up this head esteem this momentum again so the idea behind the lead engine which i'm going to show with you is that uh it the idea is that it does some of that heavy lifting for you of marketing 24 7 you know whilst you're sleeping in the middle of the night hopefully you can have a lead engine which is producing leads for you in your sleep um so that you don't have to worry about it so when you come back to having to enroll some more clients for your small practice business whatever that looks like um you've got a nice little inbox not loads but
modest number of enquiries sat in your inbox ready for you to answer. So like any good framework we need a three or four sided diagram in order to start this and essentially the three things and I'll go through them in turn but the three things which you need first and foremost are assets Marketing assets and I'll explain what each of these these are in a second the second thing which you need then is traffic and The final thing which you then need is capture Now if you only have two of these things it won't work if you only have one of these things it won't work You need to have all three things in your lead engine in place in order for your lead engine to work properly so think about it this way if you had a car uh and the carburetor was missing or the fuel injector or um uh the pistons were were missing uh if there was no fuel that engine wouldn't work okay and and even if just one of those pieces was missing the engine probably wouldn't work so you need to have all three things in place in order for this to be successful so i'm going to go through them in turn so it's kind of clear exactly what each of these three things are
And then by the end of it, you should hopefully have a reasonable idea about what your lead engine should look like. At least a few ideas. If you want to know more, you can always reach out to me.
I've got lots of books which I'm always happy to send out. I'll share a couple of links in the description below. Or if you're not following me, go and hit the subscribe button so you can see more cool videos like this.
When I can be bothered to make them, basically. Because I'm not going to be one of those guys who is... know making videos week in and week out but when i feel i've got something interesting and useful to share like today then i will do it so give us a little subscribe you'll see the next video so assets Now, the idea behind assets are that they're a marketing asset.
They live out there on the ether once you've invested your time, energy and money into producing them. But then once they're out there, any number of people can consume them either for free or cheap. And you don't have to necessarily be responsible for distributing those things.
Those assets are just there, ready to go. And essentially, they fall into two camps, two categories. We have digital assets.
And we have physical assets.
So physical assets is kind of quite clear. So a good example of a physical asset, you can't see it because of the way my camera's set up, is a book. So there we go.
So I've written several books. My books are available on all sorts of platforms. If I go to an event, I can give my books away.
People can go to my website, they can request a book. So it's a physical asset that you can... make once, distribute multiple times.
So another couple of examples of a physical asset could be, it could be a set of like cue cards. So one of my clients, Maruk Kwaja, who does positive psychology and wellbeing in the dental industry, she created this really cool deck of cards with lots of different wellbeing exercises, mindfulness exercises that people could go through.
So that's physical. It could be a brochure, which you could stick in the post to people and send out to them. Like, please, please, please, folks, don't just rely on digital stuff.
Who wants to sit there and scroll through a PDF? Let's be fair. Also, it's really nice when you get something lumpy that, you know, comes through your letterbox, you know, a bit of lumpy mail.
So a book, a deck of cards, it could be a brochure. It could be something less. like more obscure than that it could be a medal or a lego toy or any number of different things that you could send out somebody and then digital obviously is going to be things the digital equivalent of those things but it could also include a quiz a scorecard a calculator just something digital that you can build through something like lovable that people can then consume okay so it's got to be a value it's got to educate your ideal client It's got to kind of tell them about your your business and why people should come and buy from you But also it's just they're really to deliver as much value and build as much trust as we possibly can do Okay, so then moving on and remember you can't just have one of these things you need all three things You need assets traffic and capture in order for your lead engine to work and what I should do is I should write lead engine In the middle of this so you can all remember
WTF it is that Robin is talking about. So you need your lead engine. Okay, right, traffic.
So traffic is split into three bits. So the first one for me, and again, this might change ever so slightly for each of you, but these are the three which I found that have worked for me over the years. So the first one is speaking engagements.
The second one is partnerships.
I've done another video on my channel about partnerships. You can go check that out. And then final one is podcasts So essentially you'll see a theme there between those three things the theme the theme essentially is Where you're able to leverage other people's audiences.
So generally speaking events Sorry speaking gigs will happen at events conferences of various things like that Which somebody else is organizing you get invited along to speak to a room full of people And it doesn't matter whether it's ten people a hundred people a thousand people or even ten thousand people So long as you're getting on stage, it just demonstrates authority and credibility.
Okay, and actually your marketing assets that you produce generally are the thing which is going to enable you to get speaking gigs. They are going to be the things which enable you to build partnerships and to develop and get onto podcast appearances.
So you need the marketing assets in order to attract your traffic sources, which then feed into your lead engine.
Partnerships, obviously, if you can leverage other people's audience, audience is great. For me, the example I always quote is when I guested on Ali Abdaal's podcast, and that generated 3 ,000... leads for my humble little coaching practice you know from a single podcast interview.
Prior to that, it took me four and a half years using social media to get 3000 people into my email list. So there is a lot of power in partnership, but they just take a bit of time to come to fruition. Podcasts, obviously podcasts have been around for a long time.
So it's again, it's about being intentional, finding the podcasts, which are the best fit with your ideal client that have large enough volume of distribution and audience. So you can get in front of a decent number of people. And again, podcasts really help with your credibility.
So in effect, your speaking gigs, partnerships and podcasts end up becoming marketing assets in their own right as well. So they both feed into one another. Then the final side to the triangle here is capture some form of data capture.
It is remarkable how many people have some brilliant marketing assets, a proven method of getting traffic. an eyeballs on their brand but then they completely neglect to capture people's name email addresses and telephone numbers if you can't capture leads then this isn't going to work it's like this is the fuel which feeds into the lead engine right if you've got no way of getting people into some form of a list into your community a database that you own and a really simple way of doing this is like a google sheet just to start off with but actually now with the advances and things like lovable replit base 44 vibe coding tools you can build really simple crms using those tools to capture your data but there's specific ways that you have to uh that enable you to be able to make it really simple and easy to capture um people's information so the simplest one i found is just qr codes just qr code into your your marketing assets simple really have a landing page uh you go and speak at event
You put a QR code up on the slides, bang, you've collected some leads. And I always recommend as well, name, email address and telephone number. Now, what we're not going to do is spam people whole lists with SMS messages or things like that.
What we're going to do is strategically, when somebody drops into our list using a QR code. We have a look at their details, look at their email address. We see if we can find them on LinkedIn.
We see if they've got a website. We see if we can find them on TikTok and Instagram and the other social media platforms. We might connect with them on those platforms.
If they've got a telephone number there, we might go, oh, I tell you what, I'm going to click on that and add it to my WhatsApp. And then all we're going to do is we're going to get our phone out and we're going to record a short voice note. hey robin uh just noticed you've downloaded or got the qr code from my talk earlier on for the fearless pricing book um listen i hope you really enjoy it um reading reading it when you get a chance obviously that went to the digital interactive version of it let me know if you'd like a signed copy of the book i'd be more than happy to pop one in the post because i know that some people prefer the physical copy of it job done And then what you can also then do is a week later, once you've sent the book out, oh, hey, John, just checking you got the book.
Listen, is there anything else which I can help you with? I'd be really interested to hear a bit more about your business. What is it that you do?
What types of clients do you work with? Have you got any challenges in your business right now? So QR codes, massively important.
Second thing is you need some forms in your life where you can actually do the data capture. So QR codes take people. to a landing page and on the landing page you have a basic form.
Okay so you can see the two things linked and then the other thing which we've has been around for a while but we've only just been developing our own in -house tools chats. These happen in two different ways so it could be DMs And I'm not talking about smarmy, like sliding into people's DMs and trying to sell them stuff.
Buy my shit, buy my shit, buy my shit. I'm talking more so about like when somebody's registered, signaled their interest in what it is that you do. You drop them a short DM with a voice note or a personalized video and say, oh, hey, thanks for downloading, requesting the thing.
Be really nice to connect. Here's my LinkedIn or, you know, what sort of challenges are you having in your business right now? OK, so we have DMs and we also have bots.
So little chatbots, widgets that you can pop onto your website. So if you've got web traffic coming to your website, I've got one on mine. Little robot pops up and says, oh, hey, what is it you need some help with?
Would you like to speak to Robin? And then it goes into the chat thing. It gives them some access to useful resources and then hopefully leads into maybe booking a call.
So you can go and check that out if you want. You can head over to my website. Now, like I said, you need all three things in place.
You need assets, you need traffic, and you need the ability to be able to capture those leads. If you don't have those three things, you're really going to struggle to get your lead engine fired up and optimized. Now, the other thing which I will say as well is that this process isn't like an overnight thing.
This process can take typically anywhere between six to 12 months. To build up a really frictionless lead engine. So it's just going it's finely tuned Okay, a lot of people think that with AI and all this sort of stuff We're just going to automate the shit out of our businesses next, you know, we get a flood of leads It doesn't work like that You need all three of these things to hang together just because you've built really great AI automated systems if you can't Get traffic if you don't have those assets Doesn't matter how good you are with AI and automation because that sits on the capture end If you can't can't get traffic, right?
So it takes a while to spin up the lead engine and get that momentum going So you've got traffic assets and capture all working together as as one thing and i'll say as well like a lot of people i think look at my business my coaching practice and go oh it's all right for you robin it's easy for you um you you know you come from a web design background you've got the technical ability you're smart it's all right for you um this works for anybody some some people just get it and it clicks and it you know yeah lucky good for them maybe lucky good for me um but all of the assets which you see the books my website my branding my forms my talks my podcast interviews my youtube channel all of those things which you see took me 10 years to gradually accumulate and build and refine and make better and various things like that We have a massive unfair advantage in 2026 heading into the new year, 2027, whereby we've got AI tools that you can build a scorecard in 10 minutes.
It's super simple and have it embedded on your website and ready to go like ASAP. So there's never been an easier time to build this stuff. So there's no real excuses, I think.
However, I do get that some people may need to actually be shown how to do this. If you're interested to know more about the Fearless Lead Engine and what it might be able to do for you, just pop a note in the comments. You'll have access to my website and things like that.
So come and reach out and we'll see if it's something which potentially could work for your business. But you've got to be prepared that it's going to take six to 12 months of you building. all of these different, these three things, which I shared with you here, building the assets, starting to build up traffic, starting to get your capture working for you.
So it's slick, um, uh, before you will really start to see meaningful results. Um, I think it as well, if anybody tries to sell you, I mean, there's lots of like, you know, bro marketers out there who will sell you like, Hey, come and do my LinkedIn program. And we'll get you leads like yesterday.
um frankly i think it's just a load of and part of the reason why i've got i've been very frustrated and wanted to kind of tell people about this um i'm trying to sell it by the way i i want you could probably many of you will just watch this go oh assets traffic capture i get it and that's all i want i want you to just you know be get value from this that way But I was just getting really pissed off.
I went to Ideas Fest, which is a fantastic business festival here in the UK, down in Tring in Hertford. There was, over the course of two days, 6 ,000 entrepreneurs in the field. Lots of stages, lots of talks, speakers and things like that.
And I went around doing a little mini interview series, which you'll see in my shorts somewhere. What's the biggest challenge? Lead gen.
Oh, what are you planning on doing about it? LinkedIn. I'm like...
i must have heard like linkedin like a hundred gazillion times over two days and i was so fed up with it in the end of it i'm like are we are we that unsophisticated with our marketing now that the only thing we can think of is a b2b networking website um you know back in the day that that was called bni business networking and international and all of the other in -person networking groups, why are people neglecting to actually go to in -person networking meetings?
Why are people neglecting to go out and meet people at events, guesting on people's podcasts in person? Why are we taking the easy route all of the time when actually taking the time to build things properly is going to bear far more fruit in the long run? you know as it has done for my business hopefully that's inspired you a little bit and you're kind of going to be thinking about what marketing assets should I build how can I go about getting some more traffic do I have capture in place like I said just drop me questions in the comments i'm here to help you guys like this is my passion this is what i love doing i love helping business owners succeed um i can't think of anything better to do with my time apart from maybe spend some time with my family in archery those probably trumpet maybe my dogs don't know um uh but ask me questions folks i'm here to help
