I'm gonna show you how to use the YouTube mobile app to create great looking YouTube shorts. There's actually been quite a few updates, a lot of AI tools and things in there. So I'm gonna take you through the process step by step.

Now, as we're going through, remember to check out the description box below. We've got a bunch of other links and resources down there to help you with your video creation and editing. Now I'm going to take you through on an iPhone, but the process is also the same on Android.

You want to go ahead and open up the YouTube mobile app first, not the YT Studio one, the one that you actually use to watch YouTube. And you take it to the main home screen here. you then want to click the plus button down the bottom middle and then on this little slider bar across the bottom here you want to make sure that you are selecting short so then this is the main shorts creation area if you want to cancel out at any time you've got the cross in the corner here to back out of it you've got all your main menu options and stuff down the side and a few other things that i'll cover off as we go through but the first thing you really need to decide is are you going to be recording directly into the app here using the phone's camera or do you already have stuff on your device that you want to edit down or you can create something that's going to be a hybrid or a mix of both but to record directly in here before we get to all the settings and things we've got the big record button down the bottom here and you can either tap on it to start and stop recording or you can press and hold on it so if i press and hold on it now you see that we get this count up timer here this shows us how long we are recording for when i let go here then the recording is stopped so you can see how much time we have left so that time allocation though is based

based on over here where we've got 15 seconds. For some reason, that's the default to create really short, sharp. shorts we can also increase that though by tapping on it so you can see we can go up to three minutes and so personally i leave this here at the three minute even if my intention is to create something short maybe this is a drinking game every time i say short but at least this way if we do go over the 30 seconds or 15 seconds is not going to be a problem so right now we've got one chunk of footage here let's say that we want to shoot the next piece i come down here i press record i then start present and talk through the next piece and press stop when i'm ready with that And you can see now we've got two chunks that have built this out.

Now we can trim this and edit this down afterwards. But if we wanted to bring in our own footage as well, or instead of recording in here, then we can just press the button down here to access our phone's photo library. And we can then pick the clips that we want to use.

So maybe we'll import this clip here. We can then play it. We can preview it.

We can actually trim it down from in here as well. So let's just say that we only want the start of it here and not the end. maybe you just want this six second gap here.

We can choose that start time, that end time, we can press done, and that's going to bring that into our video. So we can see now that's been added at the top here as well. In terms of the options and things that we've got access to on here, one of the most important ones that's actually hidden is if we tap and press on the screen where we want to set the brightness and exposure and focus and all that stuff for, then we can do that.

So we can actually pick these areas here and it will adjust the focus and everything for us. So this is great if you've got lots going on behind you or things are distracting, things that might distract your phone and change the focus, then we can set all of that up front. If you wanna flip your camera to the back, then we've got the option over here to do that.

So you can see now we're on the back camera, let's switch it back to the front. We've got a countdown timer is the next one across here. So this will let us press record and walk away for three seconds, 10 seconds or 20 seconds to get into shot for that recording to happen.

And once we've selected our three, 10 or 20, then we can press start and that countdown is going to happen when we hit record. I'm gonna cancel out that one now. Down below that is effects.

And this is where we start to see some of the AI things in here. And these are very similar to what you'd find on like Instagram effects and things like we've got, what's the cookie? Okay, so that's following my head and mouth movement.

Lots of stuff in here, nose -topia. I mean, my nose is big enough already without this, but yeah, effects are in here and there's a lot of them. Let's come back up here.

You can see you've got categories for AI ones in here too. But personally, I'm not a big fan of the effects and stuff in here. And if I am going to apply them, I wouldn't apply them at the time of shooting.

I'd do them afterwards in the editing, which I'll show you in a minute. But if we hit the down arrow here, there is a few other things we've got in here. We can adjust the speed of our recording.

So if we want to record something in slow motion or sped up, then we've got speed control here. So anything below one is slow motion. Anything above it is speeding it up.

We've got our green screen effect. I wonder how this is going to go with my green shirt, but okay. So it's just done actually pretty decent cutouts.

Missed a little bit of the desk here, but you then go through and pick what you want to have in the background. Maybe something like this. We have a penguin.

It says I can pinch and drag to adjust. So that's on me, the image. So I can rotate it, pick it up, move it around.

So you could have something like this where we're talking about the penguin let's come back in let's go to green screen and let's just disable that let's hit the no effect and we're back so coming down in here you can see there's other things like filters just different looks that you can apply in here again i'm more for someone to apply this stuff afterwards but if there is something that you like the look of in here and you can adjust the intensity of it with this slider bar here then by all means use it if it matches what you're after.

If not, we can apply it and tweak these things afterwards. So I'm gonna back out of that. There is a lighting adjustment here.

It's already pretty well lit. If I press on lighting now, you can see that it has adjusted the lighting a little bit. So again, personal preference.

I think the brighter one actually looks pretty good. And there's also the ability to feature a YouTube comment. Because we're in the YouTube app, this has access to your channel.

Then we can bring up some of your most recent comments and things on here. But then we could then feature in our, short.

So I could now record with this comment on here and I could respond to it now right at the top we've got two other options you do have the ability to record with music directly into your recording so this would be useful if you're going to be i don't know doing some sort of dance or you want to match something to happen with something that's happening in the music so you want to do it at the time of recording we can hit add sound at the top and in here you get access to pretty much the youtube music library and there's a lot of others in here as well you can see they're categorized you can actually search and there's trending ones and all of that sort of stuff in We also have the ability to create music in the top right -hand corner.

This is the AI music creation tool, where it's going to give you different prompts and things that you can use, or you can create your own, describe the track that you want. You have the ability to create a track that's just instrumental, or you can have it also do the vocals and things for you. But let's come back out of this because the other main feature you've got on here as well is actual ai mode so if we press on the ai mode the ai playground it calls it in here you can generate a video you can convert a photo to video so animate a photo with different effects and things and you've also got that same option to create music there's also different effects and things you've got down here for inspiration or we can come back up here and let's just say we want to make a video create a video we can either add in an image ourselves down the bottom here, add an image.

Or we can use one of their prompts here for inspiration. Make me chase a squirrel that stole my slice of pizza. Make me film a cooking tutorial using food in my fridge.

Or we can type out our own one here. A penguin driving a red sports car fast. And let's hit next on that.

Okay, that's done. It's taken us straight to our timeline here where we have a red sports car. There is a penguin driving it.

Maybe we'll hit play on this. They said a penguin couldn't drive. No one beats me on this ice.

I mean, that's not bad considering I gave it a very basic prompt and we have a penguin driving a sports car and he's narrating his life while doing it. Yeah, so this is totally built in and for free in the YouTube mobile app. And we can also see that it's jumped us forward a little bit after adding that AI clip into where we can edit that down.

If we wanna go back, if we weren't quite finished filming and we wanted to add more clips and things, we can pull on this little arrow here in the middle of the screen down. So we swipe this down and then we can choose back in the top left to go back to that camera and create more clips. Then when we're ready to move forward to that next stage, the editing, we can hit the little tick here and that's gonna take us back.

Okay, so we're back now on the simple editor. If at any time we wanna go to the more advanced editor, we've got a couple of different ways. We can either swipe up, or it says swipe up to edit.

We can slowly drag, see that timeline appears. There's also the edit button down the bottom left, which will take us to the same place. Or we can actually do some basic edits and things in here, like adding text and graphics and stuff directly from this.

But you can see we've got options on the side for adding text. If we press add text. And we can just type in what we want.

This again, it's very similar to Instagram and a lot of these other apps where we can just pinch to zoom. We can pick the text up, we can move it around, scale it up, put it wherever we'd like. We've again got access to effects, which is the next one down.

So we're gonna apply some of those AI filters and effects and things afterwards. I'm gonna cancel out of this. We've got stickers down below that.

This is where you can actually add some interaction into your shorts. So we've got AI stickers again, where we can have AI. generate something for us.

But some of the interactive ones are things like the Q &A and polls, or even a quiz. So if we wanted to run a poll, we can select the poll sticker, we can type in our question, we can give the options, and then when people are watching this short, they can interact with it. So let's say we wanna remove that, just press and hold on it, and let's drag it down to the trash can, and it's gone.

There's an option here to add captions, that's the next one down here. If we press on this, it's gonna go through automatically generate captions for us. And so right now it's playing through our video with what the penguin was saying here, and we can adjust our captions again, pick them up and move them around all of that stuff.

So this is kind of the basic interface. If we go to the more advanced one though, by swiping this up, you can see that everything here is placed in the timeline. So that text box, I can actually adjust the start time and end time for the word text there on screen.

I can select it in the timeline. I can press edit to make changes to that, which is gonna take us back to that simple interface. Let's go done.

So let's just say that we wanted to trim this text down. I can maybe make a split in it. So I've got it selected down the bottom.

I hit split and you'll see that we now have two text boxes here on screen. I'll just press on the second one here and press delete. And it's going to delete that layer for us.

But here it's just working the same as a regular timeline. So any of our clips we can tap on and we can select them and we can adjust the start time. We can adjust the end time.

We can pick up our clips if I press and hold on them, we can move them around, we can reorder them. So it is cool that you can do some basic trimming and that kind of stuff in here as well.

If we wanted to crop or to zoom in one of our clips, let's just select one here. I can choose crop down the bottom and then I can pinch to zoom on that and I can rotate it if I needed to. Let's just make it a bit bigger, something like this and choose done.

And that's now applied to that clip. So if I just deselect the selected clip here, so I'm going to tap off into an empty space, you'll see that our menu options down the bottom here change. So we can add text, we can add music, and we can add stickers directly from this more advanced interface as well.

So pretty much all the same functionality as we had in the simple one, but we can also hit the plus button over to the side to add more clips. So any other files from our device. Or we can choose create video at the top.

And we've got the AI functionality to add more AI videos in here too. Let's choose back. Let's cancel out that one.

So you wanna go through now, trim down your video, move the clips around, shoot extra stuff if you need to, to build out that story. And when you're happy, we wanna hit the next button in the top right corner. It's gonna go ahead and process the clip, like save it out to your device for you.

And then we can directly upload to YouTube from here. So we can give it a title. We can then see it's suggesting some hashtags and things here that we could use if they were related.

You can edit the thumbnail image of the short as well. If we press edit, I say edit, because if you wanna upload your own one right now, that's gonna be done on desktop, but we can go through it. We can pick a frame from here that we wanna use.

for our thumbnail image. We can also add text and apply filters and things to this as well if we wanted. But when we got that done, we hit the tick and we've now got that new shorts thumbnail image.

The rest of it here is very similar to a regular YouTube upload. We get to choose, is it going out public, unlisted or private? We're gonna leave this one here on unlisted.

Let's go back. But you then do need to specify, is this made for kids or not? There's a YouTube legal requirement.

If we are creating something that needs to be age restricted, then we can add that in here too. Let's back that out.

And if we go show more options, then this is where we can add things like your YouTube video description, a location. So that'd be handy if you're going to be creating a short in a specific location that's related to the short. So it could be easier for people to find that.

And if we're doing anything that is a paid promotion, sponsorship or anything, we've got our regular YouTube settings in here to disclose that correctly.

And once you're good to go with that, we can then hit upload short, and that's gonna go live on your channel. So that's how easy it is to create YouTube shorts from the YouTube app itself. If you are looking for something more advanced, more features, more controls, then that's where a dedicated editing tool, something like CapCut or VN Video Editor would be great options.
