Big Idea

The argument in one line.

Every YouTube channel's own upload history already contains its best growth signal, so the fastest way to grow again is to find the abandoned title or format that already worked and repeat it with a twist, not chase something new.

Who This Is For

Read if. Skip if.

READ IF YOU ARE…
  • A creator with some upload history who wants a professional read on why growth flatlined and what to do next.
  • Someone running a hyper-niche or unusual-format channel who needs help widening its appeal without losing what makes it work.
  • A channel owner deciding between shorts and long-form, or weighing whether to revive a dormant or purchased channel.
SKIP IF…
  • You want a scripted, single-topic tutorial. This is an unscripted live audit that jumps between five different viewers' channels.
  • You're after algorithm mechanics rather than practical, case-by-case title, thumbnail, and niche judgment calls.
TL;DR

The full version, fast.

Leroy ter Braak, who works weekly with 11-12 YouTube channels, turns a last-minute livestream into a series of live audits pulled straight from viewers' YouTube Studio dashboards. His core method: don't invent a new idea, find the title or format that already worked on the channel and got abandoned, then repeat it with a twist. He applies this across four very different channels: a men's-health channel that quietly dropped its best title structure after pivoting to long-form, a geopolitical news channel whose thumbnails just repeat the title with no clarifying image, a UK scratch-card channel that needs broader curiosity-gap hooks to escape its own niche, and a purchased reaction channel with no consistent identity that needs a purge of off-brand uploads. Recurring rules: shorts and long-form pull almost entirely separate audiences, runtime doesn't matter as long as the video is good, and AI tools are for data pulls and image generation, never for ideation, because they don't understand human psychology.

Where the time goes.

00:0003:54

01 · Going live: tech hiccups and setting the format

Leroy comes online, patches a newsletter bug, thanks viewers for course feedback, and decides on the spot to turn the stream into an open live channel-audit Q&A.

03:5407:46

02 · First-time OBS screen-share troubleshooting on Mac

Leroy has never run OBS on Mac before and works through browser-vs-application capture live on air, noting he should look into StreamYard after a chat tip.

07:4615:56

03 · Audit #1 — Food Vs Fact: shorts don't feed long-form, and a dropped title signal

Reviews a men's-health channel that grew on viral shorts but stalled after switching to long-form. Explains that shorts and long-form pull almost entirely separate audiences, then flags that the channel abandoned its best-performing 'Man Over 40' title structure and should return to it with a twist. A side question from JJ on monetizing beyond AdSense gets a niche-dependent answer (Patreon vs. Etsy vs. memberships vs. merch).

15:5622:29

04 · Audit #2 — Ben Dykes' geopolitical news channel: the thumbnail just repeats the title

Pulls up a war/geopolitics news channel and calls out thumbnails that restate the headline text with no clarifying image, wasting the one piece of real estate a viewer actually looks at.

22:2929:02

05 · Ben Dykes deep dive: map thumbnails, ChatGPT image generation, and a gaming-niche tangent

Prescribes concrete thumbnail rewrites (a WWII-style soldier image for 'they forgot who we are') and pushes the new ChatGPT image generator for map- and mood-driven thumbnails. A separate viewer's gaming-ideation question gets folded in here: storytelling now matters more than gameplay skill, and pacing should match the game (long cinematic arcs for Rust-style building games, faster hits for something like Arc Raiders).

29:0235:35

06 · Audit #3 — Scratch Card Game Show: a genuinely novel niche that needs a broader hook

Praises a UK scratch-card channel for being unlike anything else, then pushes for wider curiosity-gap titles (buying every scratch card from one store, or only the worst-rated cards) so viewers outside the niche can still click in.

35:3542:07

07 · Scratch Card continued: simplifying the thumbnail concept

Keeps working the scratch-card channel: recommends laid-out product shots and mid-action thumbnails over the current busy grids, and floats a 'most expensive vs. cheapest' contrast format as an easy broadening move.

42:0749:00

08 · Technical Q&A: upload limits and volume vs. quality of ideas

Quick-fire answers on posting 12-20 hour videos (YouTube's roughly 12-hour / 256GB cap, drop resolution to fit) and whether more shorter videos beat fewer longer ones. Leroy says runtime is irrelevant, only whether the video is good, illustrated with a client channel whose 16-minute video worked despite internal worries about length.

49:0053:52

09 · Audit #4 — Daily Common Sense: a bought channel with no identity

A purchased reaction channel that's bounced between wrestling and African-centric content before landing on congressional-hearing reaction clips. Leroy's read: YouTube can't tell who to show it to because the channel is 'a bunch of everything.'

53:5258:28

10 · Daily Common Sense continued: unlist, don't delete, and write a real hook

Tells the owner to unlist every off-brand video and keep only the reaction format, points to tighter title structures from established true-crime and reaction channels, and critiques a weak on-screen hook. Also explains he only uses YouTube's Ask Studio AI to pull comment sentiment and stat snapshots, never for ideation, because AI doesn't understand human psychology.

58:281:02:16

11 · Audit #5 — food-content trend ideas

A food creator asks about trends; Leroy pitches contrast formats ($1 vs. $10,000 ramen, worst-rated vs. best-rated restaurants) and a 'can you profit from an all-you-can-eat buffet' concept, pointing at unrelated entertainment channels as the real source of fresh angles.

1:02:161:05:25

12 · Wrap-up and outro

Leroy closes the stream, thanks the small live audience, teases an unusual upload coming to a long-dormant channel in two to three weeks that he expects to get only 50 views, and asks viewers to subscribe.

Atomic Insights

Lines worth screenshotting.

  • Shorts audiences and long-form audiences on the same channel barely overlap; a viral short rarely converts its viewers into long-form subscribers.
  • A channel's best growth signal is usually already in its own upload history, not in what other creators are doing.
  • When a title structure that worked gets dropped without explanation, that's the first thing to bring back before trying anything new.
  • A thumbnail that repeats the exact words already in the title wastes the one piece of screen real estate a viewer actually looks at.
  • New multimodal AI image generation is now good enough to produce mood- and map-style thumbnails from a plain-language description.
  • Video runtime doesn't predict performance; a 16-minute video that's genuinely good will outperform a 3-minute video that isn't.
  • The right monetization model (Patreon, memberships, merch, Etsy, PDFs) depends entirely on the niche, not on subscriber count.
  • A hyper-specific niche (like scratch cards) grows further by widening its titles into a curiosity gap a broader audience can still click.
  • Buying or reviving a channel with no consistent identity requires unlisting the off-brand history, not deleting it, before rebuilding a single format.
  • AI tools like YouTube's Ask Studio are useful for summarizing data (comment sentiment, stats snapshots) but should never drive ideation, because they don't understand human psychology or zeitgeist.
  • For a channel selling something on the backend, a small, highly-converting audience is worth more than a much larger, unconverted one.
  • Rebuilding momentum after a run of underperforming videos usually takes about three videos of returning to a proven signal before judging whether it's dead.
Takeaway

Your channel's own history already holds its next winning title.

CHANNEL AUDIT LESSONS

Across five very different channels, the same fix keeps showing up: stop hunting for a new idea and go back to the title, format, or hook that already worked before it got dropped.

  • Shorts and long-form audiences on the same channel barely overlap, so a viral short is not a reliable way to grow a long-form audience.
  • Before trying anything new, check the channel's own upload history for a title structure or format that clearly outperformed and quietly got abandoned.
  • A thumbnail that just repeats the words already in the title wastes the only screen space a scrolling viewer actually looks at.
  • Generative AI image tools are now good enough to produce map-style, mood-driven thumbnails from a plain description, closing a gap that used to require a designer.
  • Video length doesn't predict performance; judge a video on whether it's good, not on whether it hit a target runtime.
  • Monetization strategy (Patreon, memberships, merch, Etsy, PDFs) should follow the niche and the depth of audience loyalty, not a generic playbook.
  • A hyper-specific niche can grow past its natural ceiling by rewriting titles as a curiosity gap that a broader audience can still self-select into.
  • Reviving a bought or abandoned channel starts with unlisting (not deleting) everything that doesn't match the one format being kept, so the algorithm can relearn who to show it to.
  • When judging whether a proven signal is dead, plan on roughly three videos back at that format before drawing a conclusion.
  • Use AI for data summarization (comment sentiment, stats snapshots) and image generation, never for ideation — it doesn't understand human psychology or timing.
  • For a channel selling something on the backend, a small, highly-converting audience outperforms a much larger audience that never converts.
  • The fastest way to find a new angle in a saturated niche is often to borrow a structure from an unrelated but bigger channel and bend it into the niche.

Boom, there we go. We're live. We should be live.
We're live. Boom, boom, boom. What's up, everyone?
Just had to fix that newsletter issue real quick. Hopefully everything is working right now. Yeah, I'm bad at newsletters.
I don't know why, but I guess I'm just bad at anything technical unless it's YouTube. But Merv, I was saying thank you. uh for uh for your compliment on the course i'm going to add a little bit more um to the course in the coming probably the coming month and a half i want to do a little bit more when it comes to like more practical examples of stuff that i've done the problem is that like i need to be aware of this and this is something that that takes me a little bit more time than i would want it to take but you know, with some of the creators, especially the bigger ones that I work with, you know, I'm under NDA and I can't like share anything that is traceable, like retraceable back to them.
But yeah, so I hope to make sure that the course is going to be a lot more impactful for everyone that gets it. I try to keep the price as low as possible. Like I'm not, I didn't make that, you know, to...
to make a bunch of money off like i just want it to be something like a good kickstart for anyone that starts on youtube for anyone that wants um you know wants everything you kind of need to know and from there it's just a matter of like building that experience over time um but yeah so thank you for the for the compliment ben what's up what's up matthews jj my man i just got off a call with jj a very long call actually uh andy what's up boom boom boom three booms that's uh Was it again the, boom, boom, the Costco boys or something?
What was their name again? I don't remember. But yeah, so today I just wanted to do a quick little stream for the people that could make it.
I know it was very last minute, but I kind of want to figure out like, hey, does this work on this computer? Does it work for you guys? If I would do, you know, like a live stream every now and then, you know, nothing too crazy.
Let me know if everything is still working. It says now no data. That is not a good sign.
You guys still see it? Am I still here?
Am I still here? This is why I wanted to do this stream to kind of figure out like, hey, what are the technical bottlenecks that I'm, you know, facing right now? Okay, all good.
All good. Okay. So yeah.
In this little stream, I thought, like, hey, why not make it an informational stream? So if anyone has any questions about their channels or questions about anything else when it comes to YouTube, like, hey, let's try to make this a fun little stream where I try to give some value to you and vice versa, you know, like we have some fun together.
You're good. Okay, awesome. Good to hear.
Thank you, guys. Yeah, I just, like, I stopped seeing myself. Not that I like seeing myself that much, but it's at least good to know that I'm live and it's working.
So if there's anyone that has any YouTube related questions or wants me to look at a specific channel, more than happy, like just put it in the chat. Tell me what I need to look up and I'll share my screen and it should work. I think boom.
Yeah, I can make that work. That's good. The share screen, I just have to make a browser capture probably.
Let me just see how to make this work real quick. Screen capture. Does this work now?
application capture that might be a good idea but yeah if you have any um any channel that you want me to look at any other you know boom there we go okay yeah that's working that's working that's good so we can get rid of that let me just make sure that this is not 700 million uh times bigger than my actual screen is I'm using OBS, Ben, but I've never used OBS.
I've used OBS on Windows before. I've just never used it on Mac. So this is new to me.
I know you stream a lot as well, right, Ben? So what do you use?
What do you use to stream? I also looked at like Restream or something.
but I don't think it's necessary. I don't really want to go live on X or whatever. Appreciate that.
Do I say Merve? Merve? Merve?
How do I pronounce your name? Help me out here. But thank you.
Yeah, I'm trying to stay active on X as well. It's just been like super, super busy lately with, you know, I moved from the Netherlands to the United States, to Texas. That all happened, you know, moving my whole family here while also still working on, 11, 12 channels every single week with 11, 12 creators every single week.
So it's been, it's been quite crazy. Uh, StreamYard. Oh, really?
Oh, interesting. I've, I've not looked at StreamYard yet. Let me, um, I'm going to put that on my to -do list to look at.
StreamYard, StreamYard. All right. Let me, uh, let me take a look at your channel.
Um, or let's see, let's see what we're working with here. Um, food versus facts. Food versus facts.
Here we go. So your question was, a large majority of my audience came from shorts, but now I only make long form videos. Do you have any advice?
Okay, so let me just have a quick gander at your shorts. Okay, I see. Like, so you had shorts that did like really well, like 12 million views, 2 million views.
So here's what I always say to people. It is not like you need to see shorts audiences and like long form audiences as two. pretty separate tracks so your short form audience doesn't does not really overlap and come to your long form um they're just very different audiences that have very different intended different times you know of their day and based on my experience of like working on channels where we both have shorts and long form you know a short can do great but the subscribers you gain from that short will not necessarily be subscribers that will look at your long form content and that overlap is like It's really, really small.
So outside of that, like, so let's start with that. Like looking at shorts in itself, like, hey, that got you the subscribers, great. You probably have a, you know, one of these bad boys right now, like amazing, congrats.
But now when we're looking at long form, you can see that as well in your views. It doesn't translate, right? Like it does not, like these shorts viewers do not translate to long form views.
And just, you kind of also have to see them, like I said, as two very separate entities. There is a little tiny bit of crossover sometimes, but that crossover is so negligible. I always say like, don't even like try to think that you can convert short to long -form audiences.
So now if we would look at your videos themselves, a lot about the penis. I don't know if you have to tell me something, but a lot about the penis. Let's see like what you're making videos about.
So you've had a few signals on your channel. of videos that did well so we had like the man over 40 daily fruits five foods that balance your hormones if i would have to guess your audience is quite on the older side this is a wild guess maybe but i would think this is like above 45 and up like in their 50s is that like the majority of your audience Let's see.
So let me know, Murph. Is that the case? Like, is your audience older?
Because that might change my advice a little bit. Leroy, I took your advice about two months ago. Moving away from daily politics and leaning into my Navy submarine experience seems to be better leveraging my experience.
Awesome, Ben. How's it going? How's the channel doing?
Like, how is it? Do you see a difference in your audience? Do you see a difference in performance?
Where are you selling your course? I sell my course on WAP. Everything I do is on WAP.
They're my payment processor. So it's sold on WAP .com. Do they have .com now?
Or is it just IO? I don't remember.
I don't remember.
There's definitely some lag that I need to... I need to look at. Like, it's laggy in terms of how far behind you guys are versus where I'm at.
Started as just a health channel. Yeah.
Okay. Audience responded well to penis related topics. I didn't expect my day to start talking about penises, but I love this.
I'm totally here for it.
um mostly over 45 okay yeah that that makes sense um because like that is also maybe like the audience that you know looks at this kind of content in a way you know like they they want to see like how it is you know how can i get my my little man to go up again but if i now look at like recently let's see like you have uploaded in the past few weeks like you've consistently uploaded i see let's let's have a look at like the the best signal that you have on your channel that's somewhat recent so here like this over 40 thing like let's see when's the last time you've done that um you haven't really i see is it like do you have videos that you that you've privated maybe like that that had similar title structures as this like over 40 blah blah blah because if i look at your channel now like just unbiased like that's the last video i see that that outperformed in a way where it's like 66 000 views like okay there's something there um and it's not like it's being carried by a video before like you had like a lot of momentum so this video in itself did really well for you um but then you kind of didn't do it anymore
Like you didn't use that title structure anymore. What's the reasoning behind that? Because I would say, do more of that.
Like, I think if we look at your channel, like, you know, like men over 40, that is a, like a thing that your channel is built on. Balance your hormones. Every woman must eat.
Yeah. So this is kind of an outlier in a way because it's for women. So that might also have kind of like stunted your growth a little bit in a way because you started introducing another audience into your channel around that time.
And then you had 040s fruit supercharges, eat these nuts daily to boost testosterone. So like going back to what's most important here is like figuring out like, okay, what are the signals that my channel is giving me? And a signal that I'm seeing that your channel is giving you for sure is that like men over 40.
do this, like eat this, use this. I would go back to that. Like you, I don't see that you've done it before anymore or like after that last like 66K video.
But I would say that's a title structure that has worked for you before. So return to that. Like you, there's a signal there.
And that's a signal that's worth chasing because right now you are definitely like seeing more problems when it comes to like getting those views again. So when that happens for me, when I work on channels and we have maybe like one or two duds in a row, I always go back to like, okay, let's see, like, what's the last thing that really worked for us?
And can we put a twist on that? So can we twist it? Can we improve that older video?
I use it in the video, but not in the title. For the content itself, I always try to make videos around topics that have already proven to get views. I learned that from your course.
I love that. That's great. Yeah, I, you know.
Not a better way for me to say it, but also again, like also look internal, right? It's not only, YouTube isn't only looking external, like looking at other channels and other creators to find like, hey, what are ideas that would work for me? But also look at your own channel.
Like there are signals there as well. And I think that's a signal where that title format did well. People responded well to it.
So you stopped kind of using it in your titles. And I would think like, that's not a great idea. If it's working for you and it was working for you.
So definitely get back into trying out that title like Man Over 40 and then twist it with a proven one that you've had before. So an example of this could be, let me just share that again, Boom.
Man Over 40 Daily Fruits. I would make a re -spin on something like this, for example, like Eat These Nuts. So Man Over 40.
um these uh these daily nuts will boost your testosterone and performance you know like just kind of mix and match them because like the biggest thing that if i would work with you the biggest thing that i would focus on is i want to regain momentum so i want to regain a little bit of momentum on the channel so that we can start building up the channel again i have a lot of experience like um a lot of examples of this when it comes to channels that I work with where I just look at like hey what what's been working for this channel before like what's a signal that's kind of missed and then I rebuild momentum and then we kind of get that luxury to say like okay now we're going to do a little bit more of an experimental video because the past three videos have done really really well so you know like you kind of have an excuse to be a little bit more you know crazy with it Ben, you said, let me know if that makes sense, Murph, Murphy.
I'm sorry, I don't want to butcher your name, but I don't know how to pronounce it.
Ben said about 230 ,000 subs. Fuse dropped a bit due to the slight pivot, but the geopolitical has better RPM. Yeah, I can imagine it has better RPM.
Is it, like, is your channel still, is it Ben Dykes? Because it was like the veteran biker, right? Before, am I?
Let me see.
Get rid of that screen. There we go. It's this one, right, man?
Rebranded to your name. Awesome.
Food versus fact. Message retracted. I don't know what happened there.
Again, I don't live stream on YouTube a lot.
I mean, overall, let's go back.
Yeah, to be fair, also your thumbnails have changed.
Your thumbnails have changed over time as well.
Nothing that necessarily is a bad thing. I'm just noticing it So, let's see what like what are the signals here on your channel that we could have a look at So I get like 15k 20k 21k 20 so i would say like 20 is a little bit like your average right now 46 000 here for this one so this is a little bit of an outlier 30k 15 22 23 24 20 27.
I think the main thing here is how do you do ideation, man? I'm just curious. How do you come up with your ideas?
Then in the meantime, let me see. JJ, what did you say? Denny, help me.
I'm happy to help, but tell me how. How can I help? It's a very broad question.
Help me. JJ said, what's your thoughts on the best ways to monetize your audience outside of YouTube, Patreon memberships, blah, blah, blah? I'm guessing the answer is dependent on these.
Yeah, 100 % dependent on these. It completely depends on, let's say, for example, you have a channel about, what's a good example? Like about, like painting, right?
Like you do a painting tutorials, like how to do realistic landscapes or whatever. Like then I would say, either go for a Patreon and have like, things locked behind it was like certain tutorials and how you made certain things or um you know like have an etsy store where you where you um sell your paintings or whatever you know like i think it you know depends on what you're selling but when you are you know when you have like a cult following so cult following meaning like you know people that really watch you for you and your few floor super stable you can just simply do memberships on youtube and give them early access to things give them um you know like overall like more perks so to say so yeah it's super dependent on niche like i wouldn't do merch for example if i was a marketing channel you know like if i if i would do like marketing breakdowns i wouldn't do merch you know i would do probably like pdfs and and other stuff like that um that you can sell to that audience because they're primed for that product
I mean, it makes sense, right, JJ? I mean, it totally depends.
Christian. Okay, Christian, I'll get to you in a little bit. I want to give you some time there.
Murph, thank you. Thank you. Get back to it and let me know how it goes.
Like, reply to me on Twitter or whatever. I want to hear.
i was just going to ask how many videos would you suggest to rebuild momentum you mentioned three is that a good number i mean ultimately it is super channel dependent right but it's also goal dependent so i would say for me like three is a number that i that would give me enough information to see if like hey those signals that were on the channel before do those signals like are they still relevant or are they dead signals you know have has the audience moved on have trends changed whatever like i would look at uh three is like a nice standard number but you know sometimes i work with channels where i do you know more experimental a few times in a row and that works and that's fine um so it depends on where you're at with your channel nice banana i know right you scraped the news ben okay ideation thumb style thumb style could be biggest challenge i get that i mean you are you upload quite a bit right so it's like you don't have a lot of time to do title and thumbnail ideation like you are like you're news dependent you're like in a way everything is about you know the the news so it's like you know you kind of have to roll with the punches of what the news is but i think there are like interesting channels that you could look at as well i'm trying to think what that um
my friend is like very much in love with that like how how the uh how the blah blah blah conquered something like that where it's like more like map a map type thumbnail i'm just trying to think what that's like you know stuff like that you know i think that's interesting for you as well or um a good friend of mine that I helped the economic economic matrix a good friend of mine I helped like one of my best friends actually helped him start this channel not too long ago as you can see I think like in terms of thumbnails there's also like if you're talking about like movement for example right so movement of troops movement of like military stuff let me just share my screen here There are some thumbnails here that I think could also be interesting to you.
It's like, you know, the US repositioned their warships. Iran has no idea, you know, and then it's you on the side. And then you see like a map where it's like, you know, the ships repositioning.
I think that's a very interesting and intriguing way for you to also start doing a little bit more different types of thumbnails. Because, like, you do show them, but, like, these kind of thumbs, they don't really say a lot to me. Like, Iran amidst the blockade is destroying them.
Where it's like, you know, we see the map, but I don't see, like, you know, I don't see anything that shows me, like, what is destroying it, right? And this doesn't have to be hard. Like, you can literally take, like, that and go into the new chat GPT.
The new one is pretty sick. And just literally say, like, hey, I want this and this to look that and that way. And it's like, boom.
It gives you a lot more visuals to work with. But I think like these ones, for example, on a glance, it's just not really that clear to me. Like, what am I looking at?
So I'm looking at the Iran is cracking one.
So just looking at like those, you know, those things was like, you know, Germany calls America weak. Here we do double information, right? So we do the same thing in a title as we do in a thumbnail.
I'm not a huge fan of that because I always say like now we're wasting like the little real estate that we have on someone's screen. We're wasting it. So like for that video, I would be looking at, okay, so Germany calls America weak.
They forgot who we are. I would maybe even go for a thumbnail of like you looking, you know, mad or like, you know, like your little, I would call this like a stoic mad face. don't call me out on it maybe this year like no this is my friendly face but i would go for a thumbnail maybe they forgot who we are my first thing that i think about when i think about that is world war ii you know like that's the first thing i think about so maybe a a very impactful you know strong picture of like an american soldier you know like the american flag going up like you know black and white it's showing or even like colored but showing that it's like world war ii i would say like that's a better use of your screen real estate there i don't know of course like what the video is about i haven't seen it but um then when it comes in here like iran makes new offer to us on hormuz nuclear talks um kind of doesn't align with i think there's a correspondence dinner shooter guy right doesn't really like i think that that's where you can make your your biggest leaps in terms of like okay how do i get people to like be in like click and be interested
And I think that is mainly like thumbnail title related. I think that's where you can make a lot of headway and where you should really be focusing a lot of your time. And like, honestly, again, like use ChatGPT.
Honestly, their new image generation is pretty, pretty good. And when you are in a new cycle type thing, yeah, you don't have a lot of time, right? To think about thumbnails and titles.
Like you don't. So, you know, use the AI tools that you have to make thumbnails that are just, you know, in general, good, you know, better.
Let me see.
Let me see if I can. I just thought of the invisible hand. Invisible hand.
Like this kind of stuff would also really work for your channel. Like those types of graphics.
I would use that, like this style, you know, and train like an AI on this. I really think it would work for you. Let me just have a quick gander on my phone, see how far behind.
Oh, it's not too bad, actually.
uh is chat gbt better than gemini i mean right now like with the new uh the new update i was pleasantly surprised i would have said like if you would have asked me this like three weeks ago i would have said no i don't think so but right now a lot of like a lot of the ais are just now this one is a little bit better now that one is a little bit better now this one is a little bit better i feel like that's happening a lot right now at the moment um so I would say right now that I'm impressed with the new chat GPT one.
And it's, I've been using it for a few concepts and it's been doing really, really well. Hey Lira, what are some good gaming strategies in the space? Gaming as in like, just like in general ideation, because I've seen a good, good amount of success with.
just really focusing on the storytelling like once you have a good idea locked in that's interesting because the gaming space has changed right like over the years it's become a lot more competitive and now people either watch you because you are super super good at the game and you're just so sweaty that you you know you can like people watch you to see to feel bad about themselves almost in a way or they watch you because you give them something that they can get from other channels or in a lesser variant so It could simply be that you are super entertaining.
You know how to tell a great story. But in general, this is something that I always tell creators. If you think you can do YouTube in a way where it's like, oh, I just want to play video games, that's not what YouTube is nowadays anymore.
If you want to make it as a gaming creator, you need to put the idea first. You need to put the storytelling very, very shortly after that.
and focus on that so it depends as well on the game like i can't say there's one strategy that you can do in any game but you know if you would look at a niche like uh rust for example like you know the longer cinematic storytelling videos there they do really really well right um i don't think the same thing would work for let's say for example what's another game that i could shoot like arc raiders because you know those games aren't like slow like a shorter right and rust you have a whole wipe where you can build a you know you can build enemies and you can build like friendships and bonds etc etc so it depends like it really really depends on what game so if you can give me more examples on what type of games we're talking about more than happy uh to uh to try and help you out there Thanks, Zura.
I had a good success at the end of last year, but I realized I kind of killed it by going two knees this year. So look into that formula. It'd be interesting to see if I can regain.
Well, again, like it depends, right? Like I have channels where I am more than happy if we get 5 ,000 views. And the reason why is because it's a very concentrated audience and we're selling something on the backend, right?
So that's where I'm not like trying to go super broad and get millions of views because it doesn't help. It doesn't help the creator. it just helps like for bragging rights like oh i got a million views or five million views like whatever you know if you're selling something and your conversion rate is super super high that's more important to me than it is you know how many views we're getting with that channel um so it depends like i don't know what your channel is like is it a faceless channel what what kind of channel is it what's good osama how you doing man How do you revive a dead channel?
I have a dead channel that's currently getting like five views per video. It's a reaction channel to viral debates.
What is the history of this channel? Like what made this channel like die?
I need a little bit more context here. Like what makes this, like what happened to this channel? Did you do like a very big pivot?
Is it a very new channel? Like if you can give me some more information, I'd be happy to help. For more context, I'm in the Roblox niche.
Okay, Roblox. Okay. So for Roblox, I think a lot of it is as well as like a storytelling, right?
Like it's the idea like, you know, going from a noob to pro and I don't know, grow a garden or like going from level zero to owning a big, big, you know, like very desirable thing in Roblox. Like there's a bunch of ideas that you can twist and turn and try to make new fresh spins on. But again, like the storytelling there, the progression is most important.
I would say with Roblox creators, I always tell them like, make sure that your video is an escalation constantly. So we go from something very small or something very innocent or something insanely huge because in general, Roblox audiences are younger and they love that. I call it like stair -stepping effect.
It was like, it just accelerates, accelerates, accelerates to something huge. And also like one thing that I've seen, you don't have to be as strict in a way with with roblox so you don't have to like earn everything like you can come up with little fun things like you know that that um jayless and stuff does was like oh you spin a wheel and now you get like a power up and you can spend robux to get to this level you know so that a video doesn't actually take 40 hours to make um but if you're new so if you're a newer channel and you have time and you're willing to go far I always say the best way for you to stand out in a niche is be willing to do things that other established creators aren't willing to do.
The poster boy, of course, of this effect is and will always be Mr. Beast because he was willing to do things that other people weren't willing to do. How he got his first initial big jump was doing stuff like counting to 100 ,000 and saying Logan Paul 100 ,000 times.
if you are in a position now where you're young and you're, you're willing and able to, you know, spend a week of recording on one video and you're willing to spend another week on like, you know, making a great storytelling video out of it. Like that's, that's how you're going to like break out a lot faster because Roblox is saturated.
You know, there are a lot of big creators there. There are a lot of, there's a lot of competition. So it was like, you know, once you have that idea locked in that, you know, Hey, based on, all these channels that are in the gaming space, like this, you know, this has done well before this idea, but I'm just going to take it one step further and go one step harder, then that might be the best way for you to actually grow that channel.
I'm good, man. It's been a while. It has been a while, man.
I'm good to hear that you're doing well. Yeah, Faceless Entertainment Channel, Scratch Card Game Show. Scratch Card Game Show.
That sounds interesting. Let me have a quick look at that. Scratch Card Game Show.
scratch card game show oh this is this is right up my alley this is this is weird and i love weird this is something that i've never seen before i want i want to see more of it i bought 10 dealer don't do cars for five so one was insane i i was i just want to see a most popular video i spent 15 pounds on scratch cards here's what actually happened okay let's see 50 of your finest english pounds swapped for these scratch cards each one a shot at 10 i have a spotify on in the background let me just get rid of that for a second my cash into something maybe everything or let's be honest probably nothing so what actually happens when you put 50 quid on the line well let's find out starting with the one pound money spider can we get a match with the winning symbol or find the money spider to win all of the prizes on the card so our winning symbol is a money bag but we have it right there's a window there's a shed there's a wallet there's a vault so our last chance to win is a money tree so just 50 quid down our prize is doubled so will we do it right there's a quid there's another quid well that would be better than nothing wouldn't it there's a thousand and look yes right there's one two twelve already comfortably in profit but okay i have a lot of thoughts on on
this channel in general like maybe yeah but you said like going to niche i don't know if if it's too nearly let me just have a look i spent 43 ,000 new versus classic scratch card wasn't even close i would tend to deal a no deal bonus games versus main games crash cards tested so what let's take a look at what is the last like good good signal that you've got on this channel so spend Christmas scratch yeah so it's like event driven like that did well for you um potentially around that time you know people were looking at these scratch cards and getting them i think it's like more of a thing in the uk right where you know you give like you know like as a fun little gift like you have some scratch cards for christmas i don't know if that's a thing but you know around it makes sense that around that time people are looking at it more it's like oh what are the odds that you actually win something and you kind of like filled that gap with that video i think that's great um but let's look at a non -event one
so three dollar scratch cards so i played viewers winning scratch cards okay that's interesting i like that concept in itself um i think like one thing that you can definitely do that i don't really see yet is go broader but like you know i always think like how can i make this because i like this i love this but how can you make this for a larger audience so how can you make the same videos in with tweaks I think you need to tweak some things but how can I make like kind of the same videos but for an audience that is a lot broader like that are not necessarily into scratch cards right like that are not like getting scratch cards on a regular basis one thing for example that I would definitely look at and doing is like I I bought 100 pounds because you do stuff in pounds like I bought 100 pounds worth of the worst uh worst rated scratch cards it's just like you know like i bought something of the worst how did it go right like the curiosity gap there is like oh like why would you buy the worst ones is he going to make any money at all you could do the same the other way around was like you know i bought the i bought 100 pounds worth of you know the most popular scratch cards or like the most what would you call that like the highest earning scratch cards or something like that but you know trying to find like gases like
what is something that even if I'm not into scratch cards, like I can understand. And like new versus classic scratch cards, like I get it. I get it in a way, but I don't get why it matters.
So like that's an example of like, I wouldn't necessarily click that. But if you look at your most popular videos, like this scratch card wouldn't stop winning. I like that.
Like that's the curiosity gap is like, oh, how much did he win? i bought one scratch card from every slot like that's good i like that so every slot meaning like so every like you take the viral factor of every like i did blah blah blah to every blah blah blah i like that so i think you can do that as well again like i bought i bought every scratch card from i don't know tesco you guys have tesco right um but like i think in in general like try to answer your like your own question here's like is there any other like big creator that is focused on scratch cards life of paul scratch cards okay so this guy maybe okay yeah so i think as well like thumbnails i think thumbnails can be a lot better also for this guy but also for you like just to yours are definitely better than his by the way but i would look at like what does this tell me like it tells me that you bought a lot of everything but i'm not 100 sure what it really means um so how could you make this like more how could you simplify this so how could you make it easier for me to understand like what i'm looking at so you could have like an actual picture of the the scratch cards like laid out almost like in a you know like a pamphlet type you know layout and then on the right literally just your hand
that is about to scratch the card with that coin that you have. I would do more mid -action thumbnails and test with those. Just test them against the ones that you have right now.
But this is a really interesting niche. I really like it. It's really interesting.
I think with the right strategy, you can own that for sure.
how do i post a video that's more than 12 hours long for example how do i post a video that's 20 hours long you should be able to do that if you have um like is this on a new channel because i don't think you can do that on a new channel what up youtube guy um yeah it's a big pivot of the niche and i was just too busy and wasn't posting on it for almost a year and yet it's a monetized channel okay so big pivot of the niche like art do you mean you made a big pivot or is the like did the niche change like i'm not 100 sure what you mean how important for a channel is using my image on the thumb um i don't think it's super important ben but also you do have some recognizability with an audience so it does help like if you would go like full faceless now it would take some time to like catch back up but also keeping in mind that you know you do news related content you upload quite a bit like you you are like active a lot like doing no face on a thumbnail um i don't i wouldn't be a huge fan of it like i would always try to put your face on it simply because you are like you know the the you know the expert and you want to to keep that branding for yourself as well so i wouldn't necessarily like change that
tiny compared to your usual channels well it doesn't matter like you know i again like i showed the the channel like the economic matrix of my friend and that started from zero as well you know and i help him with like half an hour of ideation a week and like give him some of my feedback so i don't discriminate in terms of size i don't i don't care you know i yeah i work with channels that have you know millions of subscribers and then it's like okay yeah we're all people uh my spend videos got a broad audience yeah i can imagine that that happens oh denny what up yeah yeah yeah i remember you i remember you for sure yeah the market for the channel is so broad yeah absolutely so i i would like look for the scratch card channel i would definitely look at you know what what can i learn from the broader niche in itself but Yeah, I think, like, the main thing that, like, looking on, like, at this channel right now would be, like, the thumbnails, but also the concepts itself.
Like, the thumbnails aren't, like, easy to digest for me. And just maybe even going, like, to, like, a simple, like, empty table shot. Like, you know, get a nice little, like, blue cloth under it, you know, that looks good.
And have, like, you know, the scratch cards laying in, like, you know, almost like, you know, that pattern. And then you have one, you're holding one while you're almost about to scratch it. with that you know that nice game scratch card game show coin that you have i would start looking like doing a little bit more of like those experimental thumbnails as well and again like going back to like the ideas like how can you broaden the idea like i tried i bought 100 pounds worth of illegal scratch cards you know maybe it's like scratch cards that were discontinued or whatever like you got your hands on it or like i i bought a hundred dollars worth of um ancient scratch cards you know like maybe you can get your hands on like you know scratch cards from the 1970s 80s i don't know you know but like think about like how can i make this for a broader audience like interesting to watch because i guess like most of your money is made through adsense right like i don't know if there's like sponsors for this or whatever um so christian christian for your channel for example is that just your name like is there anything you want me to you want me to look at for that channel or are you like no
I'm good. How do I post a video that's more than 12 hours long? So Matthias, like I just said, if you are not like a completely new channel, you should be able to do that as far as I know.
But are you trying to like post on a completely new channel? Is that it?
Because if you're a verified account, you should be good. And it needs to be like under, what was it? 200 something.
Let me just check this. How big file size. Yeah, YouTube's official limit is 12 hours or 256 gigabytes, whichever is less.
Yeah, so you would have to like, you know, down the resolution. matthias i've answered so hopefully that helps uh what do you think about using volume when ideating channels to go viral like i mean what do you think about posting like 10 viral ideas that are 30 minutes compared to five viral ideas that are 10 minutes um i honestly think like it doesn't matter you know if you make good videos um the the runtime is it's whatever like i don't i don't care about the runtime i care about how good is a video um so yeah i don't i don't know i don't know like how to answer that because it's so dependent on who and what you're making like i don't like if i'm going into a niche for example um yeah let me show you this this channel so i started working with john and bob some some months ago like for a channel like this you know that's like we started working i think around here like yeah this is this is like where we kind of started working together um i helped them here a little bit with a few videos but here's when we started like weekly like getting my process in like you know these videos went from like when i wasn't you know involved with them like it was normally like 10 minutes maybe you know maybe 15 in a in a crazy day but
A lot of times it was like, you know, three minutes, four minutes, two minutes. And they asked me, for example, like, oh, you know, like, isn't the, I think it was this video. Like, isn't this like two?
No, it wasn't that way. It was, where is it? Where is it?
Where is it? Yeah, this one. They asked me like, isn't that too long?
Like almost 16 minutes. I was like, no, because the video is good. Like I care about like, is it a good video?
And if it's a good video, that's perfect. That's what we want. So volume in terms of ideation, i mean it's always good to do volume but again like context you know um thank you yeah adsense okay yeah if it's adsense like you want to think about how can i go broader you know how can i make this interesting for a broader audience um so that is like either getting your hands on stuff that it's hard to get your hands on like or maybe it's even like let's say for example someone won like a big jackpot like a million pounds right on a certain scratch card like you can make a video like I bought a hundred pounds worth of, um, a million, like a million dollar scratch card, something like that.
You know, like, you know what I mean? Like, I didn't know the title from, from the get go, but something around those, um, around those lines. Um, yeah.
Okay. The, the maps. Yeah.
But I think like, even with the maps, Ben, like you can keep yourself like in the corner of that thumbnail. Um, just zoom in a little bit more on like what you're trying to show on that map. but just make it more apparent what that map is.
So make it more apparent that I'm looking at something like, oh, I'm seeing an actual blockade and I'm seeing, you know, like Israeli flags or Iran flags, like moving away or American flags moving in, whatever. Yeah.
So yeah, when it comes to YouTube guy, when it comes to volume, I don't care about volume. I really don't. I care about like volume of ideas so that we have a lot to choose from.
And that the chances of us hitting that great video is higher. Um, but that's it. Like, I don't really care about how long the videos are.
The audio book niche has many books that are quite long over 12 hours. So I wanted to know how to post videos that are longer than like 20 hours. Yeah.
Yeah. So again, like make sure you stay below 256 gigabytes. If you have a verified YouTube account, if your YouTube account is verified, you should be able to upload a 20 hour video.
you might have to sacrifice resolution. So you might have to do 720p or even lower to keep it below that 256 file size. Hope that helps.
But yeah, I think, again, I think there's a lot of potential in that. So...
Sorry. I used to post something on the channel that was too niche, so I got busy and became inactive. Right now, I want to revive the channel and get into a bigger niche.
It's like a 2K sub channel. But it's still the same niche. I mean, can you share the channel with me so I can have a look at it?
Because, like, I'm going through the same thing now with someone who I've been helping for quite some time. Yatster, who, you know, he was... I'll show you the channel.
You know, he pivoted completely. in the last two videos as you can see he made a lot of money with his clothing brand did really really well um made videos around that uh you know and how how that did well for him and now he wants to go in like the the deeper side hustle thing so our second video that we've now done on his channel is already on 31 000 views um and it's a pretty pretty big like shift from you know talking head uh drop shipping only uh type stuff um you know so it's possible you just have to like be very aware of like what am i working with um you know what is this channel all right i'll do um i'll do one or two more questions and i'm gonna call it for today um so if you have a question drop it now because i'm gonna have to order some lunch and then i have on my next meeting again but yeah it's um like youtube is fun youtube is a great game and it's a fun game as long as you you know you keep talking to other people and don't get too attached to whatever it is that you you know things should be happening um but you know have an open daily common sense channel you know have an open uh an open mind to what could work for your channel daily common sense channel uh
I don't know. So it has 2K subs. Okay, I think I found it.
Okay, I think I found it. Let me just share my screen here. Boom.
So what you did before was... Let me look at... By bridge.
Zambia. Okay, so you're more... Popular ones.
Okay, so it's all around like Africa and...
okay i see okay this channel has been a lot of everything it's like most of it is uh like african and now what are you doing now yeah so this channel has been a lot of everything like you i see that that's like the biggest thing is like you you've jumped around quite a bit so you've done uh wrestling content you've done African centric content.
So the problem is, is that this channel is a, is a bunch of everything. And the problem with that is that YouTube, like, especially in the beginning has no idea who to, who to put this in front of. So you bought the channel.
Okay. Yeah. Um, it's going to take time to get this to, you know, find a consistent audience.
Like YouTube needs to have time to, to find this again. I am actually going to drop a video on this channel within the next three weeks. It's a very different style video that I've done before, but I just want to make the video.
I'm just having fun making the video. So I also know like, hey, this is probably not going to do great because A, I've been inactive for a very long time and B, it's a different type of video than what people are used to from me on this channel. So I would say.
Get rid of all the videos that you know unlist all do not delete But unless all the videos that are not like in line with your current style anymore because right now It's just if if you were gets on your channel They're like what is this channel about like I don't get it You want to be clear to an audience to a viewer you want to make sure that everything is aligned with what you want this channel to be and overall like let's just like have a good look at your Thumbnails if there's anything that I can say about that I like these ones, the style of these.
I like these better than these ones personally. This feels a little bit more newsy to me. I think this has potential.
I would look a little bit more at titles of channels like... like title structures like they they are very descriptive of like midwest safety right so robbery of chroma cookies leads to officer shot like um woman finds out she killed her boyfriend mom does this with the five kids watching another good example is the old channel of i think this was the code blue cam was the old channel of noah not sure look a little bit more like title structures like these ones most embarrassing moment of this cop's career like if i would go back to your channel um so daily common sense and backfires on lazy mother like this um you know child support case i wouldn't even do that like this lazy this lazy mother just embarrass herself in front of the world dot dot something like that right like i think you can do more with title testing here But yeah, get rid, like, unlist these videos at least.
Like, just unlist everything. And just keep doing this, but focus on the thumbnails and focus more on the titles as well. Because, like, these titles feel a little bit newsy to me, whereas, like, I don't think it's necessarily...
I confess I'm a little... ...to imagine someone inside me. He got on top and...
i confess i'm a little confused and i appreciate the argument that that we've our discussion that we've been having but for me it's a little too concise also just think about hooks so is there a way that you can make hooks yourself so even because it's a reaction channel right so even if it's like um like i can't believe what this mother did in this child support case and actually like i've watched this video now three times and i'm still confused about it boom and then you get into the video and then you start reacting to it but like give viewers like a little you know a little um a hook to work with uh because i think like that hook specifically the one that i just clicked wasn't that um strong necessarily um in what ways do you use the ask studio feature i only use the ask studio feature really to like assemble data for me so it's like hey you know what give me the overall sentiment of the comments on this video or like give me the like a quick overview of the the snapshot like snapshot of the of the stats that's it really like i'm thinking like do i use it any different way like for ideation it's still pretty horrible like i've talked to um one of the
people that works on like the YouTube studio whole thing, like the UI and I've conversed with them a little bit. I think Ask Studio is great, especially for beginning creators. I think it's a great idea, but I always say to everyone I work with, and I will say the same thing to you guys, like do not let ideation be led by AI because AI doesn't know what we know.
Like AI doesn't understand human psychology, like zeitgeist, stuff like that. It's a great tool to unlock your brain, like, oh, I like that concept, and how do I now make this concept into a packageable thing? But outside of looking at data itself, I never really use it for anything.
What do you think of some trends for food -related channels? Trends for food -related channels, as in faceless or face channels?
Because, like, if I look at your channel, let me just click on your channel. It seems like it's a personality channel, right?
100 hours on Facebook Marketplace food in New York City.
Japanese convenience store. I like your concepts. um there's a lot of concepts that you can also twist was like you know i tried i tried every fast food restaurant at 3 a .m you know like the night shift type videos um viral air fryer food there's videos that i've done with um that you would probably also enjoy with fast good cuisine like ideas that we've worked on um like for example you know like the tiktok shop fire food one like that's a good example um another one was like the contrasting thing that would also work for you like you know one dollar versus blah blah blah dollar so you could do like one dollar versus five thousand dollar ramen you know let's look at what's your most popular stuff right now instant ramen noodles okay yeah so like one $1 versus $10 ,000 ramen, like $5 ,000 ramen, whatever.
Like, of course, like I understand you have, you know, constraints. Like you can't, you know, if you don't have $5 ,000 to begin with to like invest in a video, you can't do that. But like, you know, do versus videos like I ate XYZ in the worst, you know, rated restaurants.
And then in that video, you also do like the other side of it. So it's like, you know, you do the worst rated but the best rated.
no problem sam no problem is there a type of style yeah in a way danny in a way um so like i wouldn't i wouldn't look like for you zenith like i wouldn't look at um like your niche in general i would look at the broader niche so like you know start looking for you could even take stuff from ryan for example and and bend it into the food niche whereas like You know, I took the longest train ride in America.
I ate the longest baguette in the US, right? Like shit like that. Airplane food is not, that's already food related.
But, you know, stuff like that. How many days can I survive on fruit loops? You know, I don't know.
Like, you know, good comment with, you know, how many days can I survive on just milk? You know, like milk products. like i think for you it's not looking at like the the food niche but it's looking at like the broader entertainment niche uh what's this other jack has he been doing something interesting maybe that you can twist uh i mean like i i've seen the one like the all -inclusive resort like you could you could definitely do like can you profit from an all -inclusive buffet or something like can has that been done can you profit from all -inclusive Buffet Resort I tried to profit from luxury buffets three weeks ago in this video.
I'm going to look How's this video doing because I have a feeling this is yeah, hey, I don't want to say I told you so But I told you so. This would have been a great video for you, I think.
And I still think you can do it. Like I tried to profit from luxury buffets. I wouldn't do luxury.
I would do like I tried to profit from all you can eat buffets or all you can eat restaurants or something like that. Yeah. Can you make your money back on most expensive?
Like that's what I would look at if I were you.
How can I improve fewer satisfaction? This is like people don't like it when I say this, but by making. better videos by making videos that people genuinely enjoy watching sam reed also did something similar i don't know sam reed i don't know who sam reed is waffles only all you can eat tried the best and worst buffets yeah i don't like his thumbnails though i don't know what it is with his thumbnails but they look odd to me like low quality don't know exactly why but yeah i think for you um like seeing if the biggest unlock is like looking at the looking at youtube as a whole like not looking at just you know like food so i would look at entertainment creators even look at like uh calus for example like you know very different from you but like that is you can go very far like like this is like every you know like taking the everyone like this can kind of unlock your brain it's like oh every um eating every banned item from fast food chains you know shit like that um what's what's the other um name
what's his name again uh gas station 2 a .m i tested every gas station after mid like so this dude like he also has ideas that are not food related i think are interesting for you another one sambucha now that i see his face is a good one for you to like look at and see like you know what can you twist and make your own i investigated restaurants that are disappearing One more, and then I'm going to call it a day.
I tested AI schools. That's not a great idea, but there's something there with AI. Like I tested AI's worst ingredients or like worst recipes, whatever.
Why is Joe Bart so big? Yes, I don't know.
Will this be a good video? I tried every fast food restaurant's first item.
Not first. Maybe I tried every fast food restaurant's original item or something like OG item. And then you need to show very clearly in a thumbnail, for example, Big Mac.
And then with a box next to it, 1946 or something. You know what I mean? Then it could work for sure.
All right, guys, it's time for me to go. I have a call in 30 minutes and I need to order some food or else I don't get my protein.
Nice plaques, nerd. Shut the freak up, Vex. Shut up.
I wanted to try different ideas, but I think my audience seems to like long food challenge videos. I mean, it seems like if I look at your channel, like there's there's reason to think so. But I also think like you definitely have a lot of.
room to still like grow and explore outwards because like if i look at your channel like there yeah i mean like some videos are longer but i would say like your channel is definitely more geared towards entertainment audiences always good ben yeah for sure for sure always good uh like just reach out i think you uh you have uh you have my contact.
So I guys, I'm going to order some lunch, get to lunch, and then I'm going to have to go back to, to work. So thank you guys. This was fun.
I want to do, I want to do this again for sure in the near future. Let me know if we're going to do a live stream again, like what you guys want the live stream to be about. Also keep an eye out on, I think in the next two to three weeks, I'm going to drop a video on this channel for the first time in a long time.
I expect it to get 50 views. Simply because it's a different type of video than what I normally make. And it's also on a channel that I haven't uploaded on in I don't even remember how long.
But yeah, keep an eye out for that. If you're not subscribed to this channel, subscribe to it. And thank you guys.
Thank you for hanging out. Thank you for helping me on this first stream on this setup here. And I hope to see you soon.
Bye -bye.
The Hook

The bait, then the rug-pull.

What starts as a last-minute test of a new OBS setup turns into something more useful: Leroy pulls up whichever channel a viewer drops in chat and audits it live, on the actual data, instead of general advice.
